Cutting the cord...

One thing I do not like about DirectTV Now is the two stream limit. I will drop it as soon as Hulu Live TV works on Amazon Fire. I may go the Vue route, but no History channel is a big turn off for me.

I'd think that'll increase sooner rather than later. There's a couple ways of getting around it (using specific channel apps).

How does sling TV work with Xbox one? im thinking about going to sling and thats what i would stream it on.Also do they have a DVR system with it? My biggest worry is live football, does it lag a lot or is it just like watching on cable?

You can buy a device like Roku, Amazon Fire, AppleTV, Vue, etc.. or if you have a computer with HDMI out you can just hook that up to your TV and stream away. That's what I do, and it works well. With a wireless mouse and onscreen keyboard it works pretty well, but there are ways to connect your phone/tablet to you computer to control it from that device if you are tech savvy. I use OpenVNC but there are other ways.

I tried cutting the cord a few years back and the one thing that got me is flipping channels. If I was watching a UT night game on the ESPN app and tried to flip over to the LSU the time it would take to buffer was extreme. It was difficult swapping channels when there was a commercial on the game I was tuned in to.

Does the Kodi app allow for quick switching between programming?

No, Live TV on Kodi is pretty elusive. My suggestion is to try it out on your PC with the Sportsdevil and Elysium addon and test functionality. I use it everyday but some people don't have the patience for it.

I'm not sure about XBOX One. I use PS4 and subscribe to Playstation Vue. Vue is the only streaming service with DVR capabilites at the moment (as far as I know and I did quite a bit of looking around before I settled on Vue). I just cut my cable and started using Vue. I pay $35/mo and get all the ESPNs, SECN, FS1 & 2, MLB Network and NFL Network. You don't need a Playstation to use Vue. You can use Amazon Fire TV for example. I don't have issues when watching live games. You will need a HD antenna to get local channels on CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC. They come in crystal clear.

What about DVR? Does any of these cord cutter outfits enable you to record and watch later? Serious question. Thanks.

Vue is streaming so yes but it's not actually "recorded". It's just saved so to speak. It's under your favorites and you can watch at anytime.

Kodi is similar, all the shows are on the web, you just click, stream, watch.

I went roku with sling and digital antenna a couple of months back. I don't miss dish yet. I actually feel like I got some of my life back.

Airtv is another option for cordcutters, it offers streaming with OTA. Me personally I'm waiting for something similar that will offer OTA DVR plus an integrated guide with your streaming service all in one. From what I've read on some cordcutters forums, we should start seeing more options in the near future.

Does anyone know if there is a way to watch the challenge besides when it airs? I know Netflix and hule both doesn't carry it.

We had this discussion the other thread :birgits_giggle:

Earlier this month Directv Now offered me to come back with a month free. Thought why not and tried it again. Had the same issues with buffering and freezes using firestick (no issues with any other streaming service) and I googled again because I was just making sure I wasn't missing something. Well found one place that suggested taking off automatic setting with the sound on the firestick (cant remember but think it was DTS or some crap) which was a stock setting. After I moved it over to just regular sound, the picture was excellent and no buffering. I will say that the picture is clearer and true 1080P with Directtv Now, while its not with Vue. I will subscribe with DTN going forward, especially since I can get the MLB Network with it now.

it's a lot cheaper to spend the $100-$200 on the devices and antennas (depending on how many tv's you have), and scrap cable/satellite.....1 time expense...

$8/month for Netflix
$9/month for Amazon prime
$15/Month for HBO NOW
$25/month for Sling w/SEC network

for roughly $60-$70/month you can have access to just about anything you'd want, and you never pay lease fees again for rented/leased equipment. no more weather outages...

and depending on your internet/phone provider, another $60/month...a lot of people go from spending $300 plus, to less than $150 by cutting the cord.

i know for me, i switched to ATT fiber from Spectrum/TWC cabel internet....put my pone on the internet, and went from spending $70/month on interent, $60 on phone, $180 on direct TV....($310/month) to less than $190/month when it was all said and done.

and that's only because i chose to keep some other features. i could probably save another $40 or so a month if i was so inclined....

you can spend as much or as little as you want...but for $60 month on content alone, it just doesn't get much better than doing the a la carte route...

It's all relative to your current satellite packages and ISP speeds. And where you live. We have Dish Top 120 plus with free HBO at $85/mo. My phone and internet combined is $75/mo. I'm only spending $160 for everything i want/need as is. The only draw back at my prices is that my internet speed is the lowest at 4 mb/s. ( I think that is right, but that never really is a factor cause the only time that is an issue is the two or three times a year my son downloads a game on xbox. If i cut the cord, i would have to get the higher transfer speeds, then subscribe to all the services to get the other stuff. My offsets would be equal or more expensive. Plus being in Cookeville we are not close enough to Nashville or Knoxville to make use of the HD over the air for network channels. Unfortunately, cutting the cord, as much as I'd like to, isn't viable for me, and ultimately would cost me more. The jailbroke firestick would be cool though.

I recently left Directv for FireTV/Playstation Vue. As far as content, I love the streaming freedom and price.

Drawbacks include the lack of OTA channels (you're right about Cookeville being too far) and limited DVR (28 days). Directv Now would be attractive if they can get a DVR included.

oh, i totally agree with you there.

all that does make a difference. it's why i didn't change much on my end until i got the fiber. upgrading my cable internet was going to be fairly expensive, so i just stood pat, until i made the change.

like you, i'm on the fringe of the antennae reception for charlotte, so i kept Direct TV, but brought it down to a more basic package.

having the internet speed is a big deal, switching to fiber, i went from like 20 mbps, to over 60...which is plenty fast enough. kids watch netflix down stairs, wife o the lap top, and im on Amazon prime up stairs, no issues. that was key.

it's still early in this whole deal, and the best part is you have some modicum of control on what you see, when you want to see it and how much you want to pay for it.

That's good. I'll check my settings.

I have MLB TV anyway from T-Mobile so I'm good either way haha
