To me that's like a soldier saying he fights for the person next to him, not the politicians back home. Different level, alltogether, but the same point.
The players are out there playing for each other. Sure, they're there to win, but when they win or lose, it's the guys on the field that they win and lose with. We, the fans, get an opportunity to watch and cheer. If I played and someone asked me how I felt about the boos, I'd say the same thing. We've all done sub-par jobs at some point in our lives, and we'd probably crack if people just booed us everytime we messed up. It's putting a lot on the kids to boo them when they don't perform. Don't say "they're meant for the coaches, not the players." That's like saying the atomic bomb was for the military factories, not the civilians.
There's plenty to criticize without jumping on every word our players say. What do you want to hear? If he says nothing, he's a prick. If he says the boos affected him, he's weak. If he says they didn't, he's an idiot. Come on, people.
I think our team should just refuse to talk to the media for the rest of the year, that way we don't have anything to harp on them for. They really can't win. Reminds me of a saying, damned if you do, damned if you don't.
