In the fifth game of 1928, UT’s Buddy Hackman returned the opening kickoff 95 yrds to lead the Vols to a 26-7 victory over Washington & Lee. Hackman and the other “Touchdown Twin,” Gene McEver, had huge games, with great defensive efforts by Hobo Thayer and Arthur Tripp. The victory was the 150th win in school history!

In 2012, Rajion Neal won the starting TB job. Although he was injured, and missed two games, Neal still rushed for 708 yrds and 5TDs. Neal also caught 19 passes for 149 yards and 4TDs. His 2,163 career total, is good for 13th all-time in Vols history.

A few days days before UT played The Citadel in Memphis in 1983, Johnnie Jones contemplated quitting the team due to lack of playing time. In front of his friends and family, Jones erupted for 148 yards on 20 carries in the Vols 45-6 victory (41 yrd TD). With the confidence from this game, Jones would go on to be the first Vol to rush for 1,000 yards in a season (1,116).

Josh Dobbs had one of his best games in 2016 vs Kentucky. Dobbs threw for 223 yrds and 3 TDs, while rushing 14 times for 147 yards and 2 TDs. The Vols ran away from UK for a 49-36 victory and finished the season with a 9-4 record.

In 2006, the Vols hosted the Thundering Herd of Marshall. Clinging to a 16-7 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, Erik Ainge handed off to LaMarcus Coker. Coker raced around the left side for an 89 yrd TD to allow UT pull away. For the day, Coker had 8 carries for 146 yards and 1 TD in the 33-7 victory.

In 1989, the Vols traveled to Lexington for their annual “Beer Barrel” game. Tennessee fell behind 10-9 at halftime, but rallied to win 31-10. UT held the ball for 35:30 and had 248 yards rushing, with Chuck Webb gaining 145 yards on 27 carries.

Opening day of 2015, Tennessee hosted Bowling Green. It was a coming out party, and a what-coulda-been, for Alvin Kamara. Kamara led the Vols with 144 yards, on 17 carries, and 2TDs in the 59-30 victory. In two seasons, Kamara scored 24 touchdowns (144 points) on only 311 touches.

Chuck Webb and Lee Otis Burton will always be in my memories as tremendous talents taken off the field way too early: Burton by a serious medical condition and Webb by a catastrophic knee injury against Pacific in the second game of the 1990 season.

Webb was drafted by Green Bay in the '91 draft but just wasn't capable of performing at the high level he once did.

In the ‘72 regular season finale, Vanderbilt hosted the Vols in Nashville. Haskel Stanback broke Hank Lauricella’s single season rushing record, with 890 yards. Stanback scored three TDs and rushed for 143 yards in UTs 30-10 victory that sent the Vols to the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl.

During his career (‘71-‘73) at Tennessee, Eddie Brown was a stalwart as a safety and punt returner. He helped lead the Vols to a 27-7-2 record and was an All-American in 1973. He finished his career with 10 interceptions for 244 return yards.

I doubt they will be playing in September. Probably December or January & an abrivriated season with only playing conference games. Too much money at stake.
