Sorry.......fell asleep early last night

The Vols played Iowa in the “Kickoff Classic” to start the ‘87 season. A see-saw game saw UT’s defense make the biggest play, a 96 yard interception of an option-pitch by Darrin Miller that gave UT an early lead. But, Iowa stormed back and lead the Vols 22-17 in the fourth quarter. Behind the strong running of redshirt freshman, Reggie Cobb, the Vols kicked two field goals to win 23-22 (the last coming with 8 seconds left.) Cobb would finish with 138 yards rushing in his first game in Orange.View attachment 272427
I was watching that game in a pizza joint with the girl I was dating at the time. After Miller intercepted that pitch, my voice got considerably louder the closer he got to the end zone because I honestly didn't think he was going to make it. She was not particularly impressed with my behavior, and I was rewarded with both the stink eye and the silent treatment. Needless to say, the relationship did not last (she was a UK fan anyway).

In 1968, Richard Pickens was the SEC leading rusher and was named the SEC Fullback of the Year. He left UT as the 3rd leading rusher in school history. Pickens died in 2014 after battling ALS and suffering from more than 20 concussions. In ‘68, Pickens rushed for 736 yards on 133 carries, scoring 2TDs.

In 1989, Tennessee traveled to Baton Rouge ranked # 11. The Tigers were down in ‘89, but put up huge passing numbers on the Vols. Thanks to a Carl Pickens KO return, 2 TDs by Greg Amsler, and 132 yards rushing by Chuck Webb, the Vols escaped with a 45-39 victory. Webb also had 3 TDs!!!!!

The Vols finished the 1950 season with a Cotton Bowl berth vs Texas. UT scored first, after Hank Lauricella’s famous 75 yard run to the 5 yrd line, set up a td pass to John Gruble. Texas took the lead, however, until Andy Kosar scored two fourth quarter TDs to lead the Vols to a 20-14 victory. Lauricella had 16 carries for 131 yards and 23 yrds passing.

The 1929 Vols were coached by a future HoF coach and had 3 future HoF players on the team (Dodd, McEver, and Hickman.) The Vols finished 9-0-1 and are considered one of the greatest teams in southern history. Eugene Tuck McEver was a workhorse, and led the nation in scoring, with 130 points. McEver still holds the UT record for most points scored in a single season......and scored 5 TDs and 3 extra points in the season finale vs South Carolina.

Its been discussed but you can't do it as then Alabama would have two permanent opponents from the East. So you either have to give up the Iron Bowl or the 3rd Week in October.
Why would you have to give up either? You go to 9 conference games. Expand playoffs to 8 teams. Bigger tv revenue. Problem solved.

I give a firm NO on 9 conference games.

8 seems to work just fine getting SEC teams in playoff.......

In back to back games in 1951, Hank Lauricella and Andy Kozar each ran for 127 yards. Kozar did it in the 46-21 win vs Ole Miss and Lauricella’s feat was in the 28-0 victory over Kentucky. Each would help UT to the ‘51 National Championship!

Thanks peaygolf. This was my first Tennessee game at Neyland. My Pop Warner coach took our team. One of the best days a 10-year-old Vols fan could imagine.

Jayson Swain came to UT in 2003 as part of a heralded WR class. Swain was part of three Bowl teams and stands 14th in career receiving yards in UT history with 1,721. Swain’s 126 receptions place him 6th in Tennessee history.

I wish the university would make more use of that bottom picture. It'd look cool as hell on the back of the scoreboard overlooking the Tennessee river

The Vols hosted Georgia Tech in 1973. The #9 Vols needed wizardry from Condredge Holloway, and bruising running from Paul Careathers, to escape with a 20-14 victory. Careathers rushed for 125 yards, including a 40 yrd touchdown, to seal the win.
