Contract Extension for Coach Heupel?

Listen, this may be a little premature to talk about, but if CJH holds serve against Vandy and South Alabama he will deserve an extension IMO.

With a 7-5 record in his first season, after surviving the huge number transfers and going through the process of implementing a new system to the program, he has proven he belongs here.

When the season is over we ought to make a statement that this is our guy, and you can get on the bus now or get flattened by it.

No, we have seen this crap before!!

Not a good idea. We should try to eventually be paying 1-Coach and 1-Athletic Director like normal schools. I know, that seems outside the box to UT, but it is possible.

We aren’t beating FL, Ga and Bama next year let’s just hope we are within 20 or 15 points of them. Florida is more likely of the three that we upset but I still wouldn’t put money on it

😞 I can agree with that.. FL should definitely be a win though.. Ughh!

Yep....premature is the right word. Let's give the guy at least a couple of years to see how he manages the roster and recruits. He's shown promise, but let's not start throwing extensions and money at the guy before he finishes his FIRST damned season.

Lol. Why should UF be a win?
The fact that SCe, LSU, and KY all beat them this year and we beat SC , barely KY (but a win is a win) you don’t think our odds are too good to get a Dub on them?!? * It does seem like they somehow some way get their team together to always be ready for us… maybe I’m just hoping that surely we can 🤷🏾‍♀️

heck no. let's talk about that after at least 5 years. Giving extensions to early is why we're always paying coaches 3+ years after we fire them

I hope we can win but let’s be honest, even at our most strongest, we have never been able to beat UF with any consistency. I don’t understand it. I truly don’t. Regardless of the coaching staff or players, we just cannot beat UF. Even in 98 we barely beat them.

Like you said look at this year. A team we destroyed SC, made UF look like a HS team. Yet UF made us look like a HS team. We made Jones look like Tebow. Unfortunately I have a difficult time believing we can beat UF.

No reason to. He's likely here for a minimum of 5 years unless he gets fired for cause. I know we're excited considering year 1. But we're still really thin on talent. I know we have dreams of a 10 win season next year, but we could easily be in for another 5-7 type of season if Hooker leaves or gets a serious injury. I would recommend tempering your expectations in the short term.

WTH!!!!!! He is in the first year of a 5 year contract. From Dooley to Pruitt has the admin and fan base not learned anything about giving premature undeserving , and unwarranted extensions? Stop this nonsense.

Woooahhh!!! Let's be cool. I love what he has done myself. His contract runs through 2027. I think we good for now.
Ok, this was my take BEFORE Lincoln Riley jumped to USC. I somehow find myself very much in agreement with the OP at this juncture. Perhaps not an extension. I think more of the "dump truck full of cash" raise may certainly be the prudent course of action.

I’m sure CJH’s agent will be contacting U.T. Athletic dept. On Monday to ramp up his pay. Just how it works today.

Because it’s one less candidate that OU might have chosen instead. Paying Heupel a little more and increasing our long term security is wise. This is coming from the same athletic department that is spending Lord knows what on Neyland renovations.

So any time a P5 school fires their coach, we should give Heupel a raise and extension, 'just in case'?

In the formative stage of a potentially program defining rebuild I think it’s necessary to make it as finically prohibitive as possible for someone to poach our coach. Dr. White who knows more about this than either of us will probably see things the same way

All I can say is this. If Heupel leaves this year to ANY coaching position, you can stick a fork in our football program. It would be like what Kiffen did to UT football to the 10th power.

If that's the case, why not just give Heupel a life time contract and start paying him $10 million/year? Who needs the metrics of progress, right?

Why would ND pay an $8 million buyout for a 7-5 coach with a single year in a P5 conference?

Not knocking Heupel, he's had a decent first year in comparison to his predecessors, but he's done nothing to warrant taking over the OU or ND jobs, given their previous coaches.

10 million a year won’t sound so extraordinary in a few years. Have you not seen extraordinary progress. How long have you been around? ( I’m not being sarcastic) I was born in 95 and have never seen a Tennessee coach get so much production out of such a depleted Roster. I suspect that Johnny may have done it but as far as my lifetime I’ve never seen a Tennessee team overachieve and consistently play has hard as this group. That is an accomplishment itself but more importantly it projects into big things for the future. We have to be foward thinking
