I like this. This makes a lot of sense, wait on a splash hire for 2022.I don't know...think about it: What top tier coach is going to come in here with the NCAA breathing down our back, knowing we may have scholarship limitations, bowl game implications. It doesn't make us relevant any sooner, but maybe, assuming Steele doesn't get a three year contract, this might be the best scenario right now. I would rather, when the time comes, make a splash hire.
I know the argument is "our recruiting class". Well, if you can't do anything with 4-5 star recruits, their only as good as the paper those stars are written on. I hate every minute of it, I really do. And yes, to your comment, I think you're right, they brought him in, having a feeling they would have to go in this direction.
It’s not like any open position though. When a position opens up at your company, are there entire message boards dedicated to discussing the hire?
So you are willing to ruin the classes of 2022, 2023, and 2024....because this "temporary staff" will not be here and relationships with a new coaching staff will not exist. Recruits will not give a damn what those temp coaches have to sell. We will be playing catch up until 2024 in recruiting. With that mentality we will be looking at bottom tier last place SEC recruiting ranks. Finishing around 35ish for 2 or 3 years. Will Plan D recruit at a “SEC level” in the next 10 months?
It’s not about recruiting right now imo.
The deterioration to the program from going with a Plan C/D and a temp in the next 10 months is likely less than going from a home run next December rather than a Plan C or Plan D now.
I’ll exchange a top-25 class for a top-35 one if it gets a top target next December
To me..... We can get outta this quicker with a big time coach.. no interim, no coordinator that have no head coach experience...That’s the only reason I think we get Steele is major sanctions.
I doubt we get a top tier guy right now.
The question to me is do you try the up and coming small program head coach or budget Steele?
Tough times.
Nope. Did not post it for reactions at all...posted it to make a statement. Agree/disagree/ignore or not--that is your option. But do not for a second try to understand why I do something or not. Last I understood, this is a UT athletic forum and members are allowed to make posts. You are free to ignore me all you want or put me on ignore--I really do not care. But there is no need for reactionary condescension about how I may feel about the laziness of the school and athletic program over the past 13+ years and the level of frustration that comes with that.I could care less. If you wanna abandon the team then do it. Don’t post it just to get reactions. Which you did. If you can’t handle people criticizing you then don’t publicize your silly schoolyard rhetoric.
My point is that the optics of it matter, especially to potential recruits. Why would they want to come to a school that can’t even hire a coach?
That’s how you end up like Tennessee. You don’t get forced into a hire based on short term looks. That’s weak leadership.Looks matter a lot in college football, regardless of whether you agree with it or not...it matters to recruits and potential coaches.
It makes sense to me, maybe not others. By then, we'll know what the NCAA is going to do. I don't care what anyone says, that's going to be a problem for ANY top tier coach we would want. We're just not in a good place right now.I like this. This makes a lot of sense, wait on a splash hire for 2022.
Of course, I would take a short term hit if I knew a Saban type coach was waiting on the other side. There is just no way you can ever know that though. That’s how you end up like Tennessee. You don’t get forced into a hire based on short term looks. That’s weak leadership.
Let me trivialize it to help articulate. Would you take the short-term “looks” hit if you were confident Saban were on the other side?
The only question to waiting are whether the chances in landing a better coach are high. White should be good enough to know

I just think we need to make sure we exhaust other options before going with Steele. There are several good coaches out there. Just because a couple tell us no, it doesn’t mean we should panic and immediately hire Steele. That’s how you end up like Tennessee. You don’t get forced into a hire based on short term looks.
