Conflicting rumors all over the place...(Kevin Sumlin)

Has Fortenberry softened his stance on dooley being gone?

being serious here...and it's difficult for me right now...Dooley's not going anywhere.

No, I don't have inside sources, no I haven't talked to Hart, anyone on the staff, or my cousin's neighbor who happens to be the assistant to one of the coaches on staff.

Means nothing. Hubbs will probably know something before most but it's not like Hart is going to loop him in on what he is planning.

Exactly. There is a chance that Hart is willing to make a move if and only if he has the right man lined up already. If you are shopping for coaches with a 75% chance of doing nothing, you do NOT want it getting out there.

One was here, two were elsewhere and I have no reason to doubt either. That said, it's all second hand info, as most rumors are. From a standpoint of logic, it makes sense that we are putting feelers out there, especially if Hart thinks Dooley is a lame duck like many others do.

Bottom line, you hear something once, and you can shrug it off, but if you keep hearing it and you start to think there may be fire

Its not like there is an echo in the inner tubes.

That's probably true. But, I don't think there's any real chance that they're planning to fire Dooley.

not happening, and if it did they better get someone better than sumlin. he is a good coach, but not sure the best for us .

I could see the chances increasing some if some of our assistants, namely Wilcox, Sirmon, Thompson leave for other jobs. Not saying that it happens, but if it did it who knows what might happen then.

I assume that we will probably see rumors about every coach in the next few weeks. By the way, I don't think it makes any sense to make a HC change unless you can get a big name. If you can pull a Gruden/Stoops/etc. type of coach, then you make the change. It doesn't make much sense to go out and find a mid-major guy, IMO.
While I agree that you don't make a change unless you can get a big name.....there aren't many (if any) big names out there willing to come to UT. That is the strong impression I got the last go around. There are no Stoops-esque coaches out there willing to leave their school to make a lateral (maybe downgrade) move.

The issue to me is how much we're willing to pay. That will determine what level of coach we can attract.

What level of coach is willing to come here if money were no object? I assume Hart knows as much as anyone that this is an investment (Alabama-Saban). Just not sure how high a level of a coach we can get regardless of how big our dump truck is.

We've only looked for bargains with Hamilton. We don't know what we can attract if we open the checkbook.

If Wilcox is gone, I'd advocate making a change right now. I'd be fine with hiring Sumlin, but I really hope the guys in charge at least try to go big with the hire, even if they get rejected.

Yea, I wasn't sure if it was a limited checkbook or the fact that coming in after Kiffin (and possible NCAA sanctions) scared most of them off. I hope you are correct and our name list is more top heavy this time around (or whenever Dooley's era ends).

I wonder if that is true or not. When we looked for coaches the last two times, there were supposedly a lot of big names on the list. I don't think we would talk to the Stoops of the world if we weren't willing to pay him big sums of money.

Our program was a complete mess when Dooley was hired. There simply wasn't much in the cupboard and the coaching turnover certainly didn't help. We have what, one player going to get drafted in this year's senior class and next year's isn't much better.

I'm also wondering if the boosters felt comfortable having Hamilton spend their money.

If they're impressed with Hart, they might be willing to open up their wallets a bit more.

Key holding all this together is not to let the D side coaches leave....Wilcox must stay.
