Coker is finished

You know what I meant..... Guys like Vick send a message that if you can play, the rules of life don't apply to you...
Right, with the pending court case likely followed by a prison sentence, millions of dollars in debt, and little chance of ever playing football again Vick is really showing kids that they can get away with anything they want.

“As a coach, my first obligation is to the growth of the young men with whom I'm entrusted. Sometimes, that means encouragement and mentoring, sometimes it means helping them understand the consequences of their decisions. LaMarcus is a talented young man with a lot of life in front of him. It is my hope that he will look back at this one day as a life lesson that helped him get things straight for his future."

with this statement, Phil has earned back a measure of my respect. Coach Fulmer, I tip my hat to you.

Seriously? What respect did he earn back? I doubt anyone would disagree that Fulmer really cares about the players. But with regards to his football coaching ability, I still think he's biting the big one.

Does anybody think that being given 3 or now 4 strikes involving drug offenses is counter productive in the disclipine area and with the players thinking it must not be that important of an issue? I think it's waaaaayy more important in developing young men to know that those offenses will not be tolerated by enforcing a policy of you get one mistake to learn from because you're still young but the next time you're out of here with the suggestion you seek professional help.

I want a 2 strikes and your out policy honestly. Telling kids they can test positive 3 times in their playing career and still remain on the team is just plain retarded.

I think he was talking about respect for CPF as a mentor, not a football coach. This is about Coker and his personal issues.....there are plenty of other threads to discuss Fulmer "biting the big one".

2 is too many. And to be honest, one strike should be plenty. These guys are getting a free ride to a top university in both academics and sports and they get how many chances?

I'm sick of these guys getting called kids. They are 18-23 years old. There are guys that same age getting killed in Iraq. These are men and they should start acting like it. I don't feel sorry for LC, he's apparently an idiot and had it coming.

Wow, way to totally butcher what I said! Which was:

"Seriously? What respect did he earn back? I doubt anyone would disagree that Fulmer really cares about the players. But with regards to his football coaching ability, I still think he's biting the big one."

Let me rephrase this so that you can understand.

1) If he was talking about earning respect back for Fulmer as a mentor (or as someone who cares about the players), then why would Fulmer have to. He has always shown great respect and concern for them.

2) If he was talking about earning respect with regards to his coaching ability. The mentor thing has nothing to do with "X's" and "O's" on a chalk board and teaching how to tackle.

So I think it was a really stupid statement, and now I guess I should categorize your response the same way.

He will go to another school, probably be productive, show his talent. Similar to another former Vol named Onterrio Smith. With his talent he may be able to carry himself a little farther in his life. However with the lack of self motivation and drive to better himself, his talent will take him until he really shoots himself in the foot and is really done.....a la Smith. He can get away with it somewhere in the NCAA. But the NFL is too deep with talented players to get many chances. See Smith, Vick, Quincy Carter, etc. I hope he gets himself together, but the past of similar characters are really against him. Good luck, LaMarcus. In my opinion this helps UT clear up some confusion in our backfield. We now have Hardesty and Foster, who want to work to be on our field, and who can help Creer be a damn good light that is going to shine bright.

I am not sure what he posted that would make you think he was talking about Fulmer's abilities as a X's and O's football coach. If that makes me or my response to your attempt to turn this into another Fulmer can't coach thread stupid, then so be it.

No, I think the dead horse of coaching has been beat sufficiently. I however was defending the fact that I have always thought Fulmer cared about his players. IMO, I can't think of an instance that has been in the news (that I would have seen) that Fulmer didn't try his hardest to take care of a player.

I may not like his "x" and "o" coaching abilities, but I really think a lot of the "man" Phil Fulmer.

That's interesting, because you were the one that brought up his coaching abilities and him "biting the big one".

It seems we are in complete agreement in regard to Phil Fulmer the "man".

I don't want people getting the idea I like how he's been coaching. :)

What do you know, another great talent lost to pot. A few recent ones include Onterrio Smith, James Banks and now Coker. All the talent in the world and the brains of a walnut.

Well at least now Hardesty will get the carries he has deserved for two years. If #2 can possibly stay healthy, I think he can be a star.

Good move by Fulmer and a great quote from him. When you accept that scholarship to play bigtime Football, you have a responsibility to walk a straight line. It is time for some of these young athletes to stop be blinded by the superstar image and actually present yourself in a positive way. Any other words GROW THE F' UP AND ACT LIKE SOMEBODY. :peace:

"A fourth failed drug test results in automatic dismissal..."

Maybe it's me, but there seems to be something terribly wrong with that policy.

"Four strikes and you're out" = "Three strikes are okay".

Doesn't sound any better that way, does it?

It does, however, sound an awful lot like the NFL Substance Abuse Policy. Except, as you might expect, that the NFL policy is even more forgiving. Apparently, you have to smoke your weight in ganga within one single season, or snort a helmet full of coke, or shoot more than three people outside a high-profile strip club, before you really begin to feel the wrath of the NFL.

And we all know what a gleaming success that piece of corporate legislation has turned out to be.

We have no one to blame for this mess but ourselves, for tolerating it, endorsing it, and buying it. One ticket..one jersey...and one athlete at a time.

The General, I assure you, is not smiling right now.

Shame on us. Me included.

go vols.

I can't really disagree with a single thing you just typed.

Thanks, GA. You and I have our differences, based on the fact (I assume) that we are both very passionate about both our Vols, and our personal beliefs.

But hearing, or reading, that from you tells me I ain't all bad.

go vols.

I know he brought it upon himself, but I cannot help but feel sorry for the young man. LC, I'll say a prayer that you find your way.

Can't feel sorry for someone that walks over a cliff 4 times. To me, just a total idiot. If someone told me that if I was a good boy for 2-3 years, I would be a playing in the NFL with all the money I want. and pretty much do what I want, but I can't do it....shame on me. Most people in America could only dream of such an opportunity.

Sorry, he got what he deserves! :furious3:Good bye and don't let the door smack ya.......

greetings all...

I'm a long time Vols fan, TN native, and UT MBA alum. I've lurked here for a while and really appreciate all the insights provided on what's going on with the Vols.

The site gives some hope in what must be one of the most embarrassing times in TN football history. As a long-time fan, I'm not embarrassed by losing. I grew up watching the Vols through the 70's and would consider the two best seasons/moments over the past few decades as the 1985 team that beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl and, of course, the NC team in 1998.

The 1985 team represented a whole lot of years of hard work to regain national recognition. It was a classic Vol team that played and beat more talented teams like Miami by both playing harder and playing together as a team. TEAM and TN football were one and the same.

Now, we're the polar opposite of that team--and what TN football really means. We've got a bunch of talented players who can't play together in an sense of the word team (with the exception of the Georgia game this year). Whether that CPF or something else is hard to determine, but all the posts here help.

Coker was so much fun to watch. What culture could possibly take so many talented athletes and let them fall prey so often to so many things in life that a TEAM can help others overcome? There are problems on the hill... and I think CPF just needs to practice some serious "tough love" with this group and all that follow. I think CPF believes in these players and they believe in him, but why he can't seem to use that to help these guys grow and develop into men with character is beyond me.

I love Vol football, but we really have to get back to our roots. I can live with getting blown out by Florida and Alabama... as long as our players give it their all and play for one another. We got blown out for the opposite reasons this year. Apparently, we can't find any good leadership anywhere.

I've got high hopes for this year's freshman class and I believe Eric Berry is the kind of leader who can help turn things around. But, if we need to let the entire crop of upperclassmen go... suffer through the transition to get back on track, I'm all for doing whatever it takes to get TN football back. It's gone for now, and Coker's departure simply captures that reality!!

Sorry for the long post...but after lurking for several months, I just had to get that off my chest. :peace:
