I have read a ton of lists for candidates.

This is my list from a fan reaction.....

Hires to be stoked about, twitter sphere registers on the Richter scale
1. Rick Barnes - resume speaks for itself
2. Steve Lavin - resume speaks for itself
3. Tom Crean - if he comes available, although I don;t think we can wait that long

Hires we would be okay with but only minimal tweets and wait and see with possible tweets coming. These guys all have records of success with some minor concerns.
1. Rick Byrd - great in game coach with recruiting concerns (recruiting pays the bills)
2. Rick Stansbury - weak in game coach with good recruiting (recruiting pays the bills)
3. Steve Prohm - at least has a nice track record of success at his level

Hires that if they had DIFFERENT last names we would be totally bummed about with subsequent twitter fail threads, but we would all probably come around within a month of the hire, but that could also be EPIC busts
1. Richard Pitino - at least he would bring some buzz and national attention
2. Archie Miller - same as Pitino
3. Bobby Hurley - same as Miller

Hires, that we are being told should be on the list, but have no idea why they are anyone's list b/c they have no record of doing anything of measure so far. Twitter will follow with support form the "coaching community" about rising starts, etc.......just like when hired Tyndall. Most of these guys aren't even playing with their "own" players???
1. Will Wade - 2 seasons at UTC
2. Michael White - 4 seasons LA Tech - no NCAAs
3. Ron Hunter - 20+ years as coach 2 NCAAs, (recent wth his son and 3 D-1 transfers)
4. Chris Holtman - What in the .....? 1/2 season as a fill-in at Butler and 4 seasons at Gardner-Webb.
5. Brad Underwood - 2 season at SFA

Moot point from what I've read. Byrd reportedly has no interest and wants to finish career at Belmont.

I believe Barnes is the one alums, boosters, and any other money players can all get behind.

My only quibble is that Underwood belongs in the second category.

I put Underwood in that category b/c he only has 2 season as a head coach. 2 seasons with the previous coaches players. I just hate that he does not have more experience as the head man. I will agree however that at least for him he is winning at a truly unbelievable pace AND the guy before did nothing with those same players. He could at least be at the top of the pile with the guys with no experience.

Lavin and Crean are absolutely horrible, horrible hires. I don't know why anyone would want them other than that they've seen them on ESPN. There is a better case for Barnes and I still couldn't stand hiring that chronic underachiever, putting TBA to sleep. That first group would not be good for UT, at all.

No, to Pitino, who is only interesting because of his daddy. Miller and Hurley are solid hires. Underwood is going to be a great coach somewhere. I don't know what the fascination is with Wade, other than being a local boy, and Hunter is the flash in the pan type we get every March when some unexpected team pulls off an upset or two. White, maybe, though he hasn't done a whole lot a LA Tech and Holtman could be a very good coach. He did just take out Barnes and Texas with their NBA players in the first round.

I though Marshall had told bama to get lost? Marshall could go to MUCH BETTER programs than bama--that goes without saying. And I doubt even corrupt bama will offer him more than, say, Texas.

To be fair, only 2-3 players on this years team were left over from Coach Kaspar (ones that played, were a few more on the bench). Arguably the best two, but still. Last year was obviously a different story, but this season we had a true freshman that he recruited that started and the first 3-4 guys off the bench were JUCO guys he brought in.

Also agree that 2 years experience is still kind of green for a major step up for a coaching position. But what he's done in those 2 years is better than anyone in history.

Thanks a ton for sharing the info. I do like the fact that he built at least some of the team himself. I also agree that the historic nature of his winning is very intriguing. If you told me we had no chance to get a guy with a track record of winning and I had to pick amongst the the guys with 3 or less season as a coach I like Underwood's upside and intrigue. I also like that while he is green as a head man, he is not green to college coaching or life in general.

Agree, and that was another point I forgot to make. He's been an assistant in the Big 12 and SEC. So he's been in environments like Phog Allen and Rupp, and he had us in a pretty difficult schedule this year (at Baylor, at Memphis, at Xavier, UNI at home). And now has coached 3 NCAA tourney games.

Wait.

Nevermind, he's a terrible coach you should NOT hire him.

Except Lee was a top 100 player and not really overlooked. If I remember correctly, the issue with Lee was we had Scooter McFadgon transferring in from Memphis and taking up the last scholarship in that class. With what Scooter had done at Memphis up until then it was hard to turn him down for Humphrey. Plus we had Bradshaw and Howell in that same class already.

Incompetent? That may be the case, but the reason isn't because of Greg Marshall. Bama is going to offer him probably close to $4mil+/yr, but even then I'm not sure he takes it. Let's face it, Bama has the financial ability to do something like this while Tennessee IS NOWHERE CLOSE to being in a financial position to do that right now. And keep the "the big money boosters will pony up money" or "we have SEC network money" blah, blah, blah to yourself because that doesn't help TN for the immediate future (Bama $$$ reserves = $80-100 million vs. TN $$$ reserves = $2-5million). Tennessee cannot win a bidding war with Alabama right now, let's be real.
