Chris Petersen thread (merged)

Petersen is a better coach than Gruden. There, I said it. He knows how to build and maintain a program. And can flat out coach.

Gruden would being an instant energy, but I do not know if he can sustain it. Petersen can sustain what he brings.

I would take either one, but I see Petersen as more of a long term solution.

Completely agree. If he is at all interested then Currie has to make the call.

This is a no brainer if indeed a realistic option. #1 choice bar none.

As for a potential staff under Peterson:

Sean Kugler (OL/TE). Recently HC at UTEP. Has a lot of pro coaching experience and served under Peterson at Boise State.

Jimmy Lake (DC). Current Co-DC at UW. Has coached some really good DBs with the Huskies. Has also coached in the Pros.

Whoever is hired will be rumored to bring along Tee Martin as OC/WR coach. I'd love to keep Gillespie coaching RBs and maybe even Warren as DB coach. Maybe Jones at LB coach??

Know any other potential coaches with ties to CCP?

He'll stay at Washington as long as they'll have him. He's a west coast guy, and the university has already extended his contract through 2023.

He can read the writing on the wall. 1 loss Washington has no shot at the playoffs. With 2 weeks left whoever wins out between 0 loss Bama, 1 loss UGA, and 2 loss AU is making the playoffs. He wants to be the best coach in CFB. He felt disrespected at Boise St even while knocking off top teams every year. He knows to be the best you have to beat the best, at right now to that’s Saban. I expect him to take a good look at the UT, A&M, and Ole Miss jobs

You think he’s worth 11-12 million per year and a 6-8 year contract?

If Peterson isn't, no one is. Pick the number you would pay for the best available coach. Offer it to Gruden - that's what the fans want and he has that Super Bowl ring and mystique. Then some order of Kelly / Peterson / Patterson.

It really doesn't matter if one is slightly better or not in a technical sense. All can probably win 10 games a season here consistently and occasionally win 11+ in NC championship contention. That's the ceiling for Tennessee with the competitiveness of the SEC and Alabama-Saban on the schedule every year. Why would it be worth less money to you to do it with Peterson/Kelly/Patterson than with Gruden? They all have the same ceiling. On top of that, Gruden has the lowest floor.

Fine if they say no, but they are less likely to all say no collectively if you stay on the big money treating them as equals - and again, its worth the same to the program if any of them say yes.

This gave me a raging Gruden

Petersen is an Urban Meyer level coach whos never had the school to give him the tools to absolutely dominate. Ill never forget his fiesta bowl upset of okie, greatest game ive ever seen and some of the most beautiful coaching and execution you could ever witness. The cinderella was dead in the water with the late pick six and they fought right back then had the balls to call a dang statue of liberty in overtime to kill the giant. Amazing.

He's 53 years old (born in '64) which leaves him plenty of time on the clock to establish a dynasty.

He's the first two-time winner of the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award in 2006 and 2009.

WAC Coach of the Year in 2008.

Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 2010.

He has an overall record of 128-28.

Petersen would qualify as the best UT athletic hire ever and it wouldn't even be close. So out of character that it seems just as delusional as wishing for Gruden. Hell of a Christmas present, though. Summitt was groomed here so that doesn't count.

Peterson is a Top 3 candidate for any major school. He's signed at WU til 2023, but that doesn't mean you still don't try. Hafta put in the call to gauge interest from his agent. He makes 4.85mil a year at Washington....and we were paying Butch 4.1, so we have plenty big enough pockets to make the 7mil offer with no hesitation for a Top 3 coach. We just offered Chip Kelly a rumored "6 million range offer", so I know we have the funds to do whatever it takes to get this hire right. Peterson has proved himself at 2 solid schools that can't be disputed. So he's earned the "big offer". 7mil offer to his agent would get him intetested. That's a huge raise from 4.85, and it'd get him a chance to prove himself in the SEC (which has been the talent bar for coaching). We can't hold the money back on these searches anymore. We need to pull the trigger on a big time hire....and soon.

Vols Want Chris Petersen?

The Vols have serious interest in Washington Huskies head coach Chris Petersen, reports 247Sports. It's easy to see why Tennessee wants Petersen: he's a great head coach and would be an instant upgrade for the Vols. However, Petersen has a good job with the Huskies and given that he's spent most of his life and coaching career on the West Coast, he might not want to head to Knoxville.

Tennessee Coaching Rumors: Vols Interested In Chris Petersen, Jon Gruden Update, Greg Schiano And More

I think we should make him an offer he can't refuse.

Best article I've read today! Except the Schiano part, ha. I guess Mullen is slightly ahead of Schiano in my book(not by much). Peterson is worth the money. If our AD doesn't have the guts to go all-in on a big hire, then it's a big problem. What the heck is the difference from a 5mil offer and an 8mil offer for a school like UT who makes hundreds of millions a yr? Makes no sense to squabble over a couple million if it gets us the right guy to be here the next 10yrs. Peterson is that guy. I'd take Peterson, Patterson, Franklin, or Jimbo. I'd call their agents, put 7mil on the table, and see which 1 jumps for it. We've got a great fanbase, an great stadium (with 250mil renovations being added), great facilities, and plenty of money. Better than TCU by far, better than Washington by far, slightly better than Penn St, and about even with FSU. So all things considered, it should all come down to $$$. If Currie puts 7-8mil on the table, then we'll land 1 of our Top 4 choices.

I imagine UW would match to a certain point and get a home team discount. As would TCU with Patterson, Penn St with Franklin and so on.

This is true. They are all lucky to have the Coaches on the deals they have. Saban makes around 11mil with his "bonuses and incentives". And Dabo makes around 8. And that's because they both bring Championship expectations each yr. So I see that you've gotta pay to play. Most solid coaches are being paid between the 4.5 - 5.5 range. So that means that we've gotta go above that. Jimbo makes 5.5, Patterson 5.1, Peterson 4.85.....their schools will try to match, but only up to a certain point. Chip Kelly is only getting around 6mil offers from Florida/UCLA (And even UT threw our 6mil hat in the ring unsuccessfully), and Chip is supposedly the "#1 coach available". It's also a stature/respect thing too. Like a "I make more than that coach" type deal. So if we put a 7mil contract on a head coach, that would put them as the 3rd highest paid in all of college. That means something to coaches. Butch was #20th on the list at 4.1, then alot were bunched up around 4.5 - 5.5, then Dabo around 8mil at #2. So 7mil would get a deal done i would think with 1 of our Top 3 or 4 choices. Especially if Chip's gettin 6, then a 7mil offer is big time for a big time coach. Aim high, or don't even aim.

Bama spent 56 million last year on football.

We spent 27 million, i think.

So tenn revenue 120 something million. And 20 something million spent on football.

Bama brought in around a 100 million and spent half on football.

Until we are willing to spend what elite programs spend we will be losers and afterthoughts.

We are charlie Finley and Bama is Steinbrenner. Its that simple.

The yankees had dynasties, finley had profit.

Tennessee runs its football program like Khan ran the car wash on King of the Hill.
