Chris Petersen thread (merged)

Bama spent 56 million last year on football.

We spent 27 million, i think.

So tenn revenue 120 something million. And 20 something million spent on football.

Bama brought in around a 100 million and spent half on football.

Until we are willing to spend what elite programs spend we will be losers and afterthoughts.

We are charlie Finley and Bama is Steinbrenner. Its that simple.

The yankees had dynasties, finley had profit.

Tennessee runs its football program like Khan ran the car wash on King of the Hill.

Agreed. You can't "bargain shop" and expect to compete for championships. It doesn't work like that. A random "diamond in the rough" like Dabo a few yrs ago isn't likely. Very low chances of it happening. And now Dabo is even the 2nd highest paid behind Saban. You pay for a proven winner. Currie said "money won't be an issue", so I'm truly hoping he's a man of his word. If so, then a big money offer WILL get us a top notch coach. It's very simple. Big money offer = interest.

I understand, but it's not Petersen's name the fanbase is pleading to be the next coach. But it would be pretty impressive to see the UTAD use Gruden as a smokescreen to hire Petersen.

The fan base doesn't want Gruden. Those who do just happen to be the most delusional and loudest.

I like Petersen.. but can he win in the SEC... he hasn't had the same challenges out west

Agreed. And not only did he win, but he wasn’t limited to WAC competition either. Always pulled out a big road game (Georgia/Oregon), and beat Oklahoma at their prime. Heck of a coach.

Didn’t they beat VT to open the season too?

To get a very good P5 coach to rebuild UT, it may take paying substantially more than what that coach could get at their current place. NOT what they currently get, but what a place like TCU, UW, or PSU would be willing to match. You can toss out AD tax reportings in that case, as all of those schools have deep pockets past the reported AD revenues. We’re probably talking north of 8 million imo.

Petersen, Patterson I think are sure fire winners here.

Gruden would be neat just for the salt from the media and the boom in attention and recruiting. I don't know that I think he's an all-time winner, but I'd be happy with him.

Outside of those three, I'll be fairly underwhelmed. Especially if it's Mullen.

Yes, and a Chip Kelly coached Oregon.

Also on the Peterson can win anywhere beat anyone train.

Going into this season, 11 coaches had a better than 50% win rate vs. top 25 teams. Peterson is one of them. I haven't verified the numbers, but at glance he appears to be one of only two guys on the list have done it with the majority of their recruiting classes outside the top 25.* And none of them have done it with a majority of their games played outside a power 5 conference but Peterson.

*Gary Patterson is the other to do it with less than top 25 classes.

Which college football head coaches are best & worst vs. Top 25 teams?

Exactly. I think if we hit our 4 top dogs with 7-8.5mil offers, atleast 1 or 2 wouldn't be able to turn it down. They would give their school the chance to match, and I'd say atleast 1 wouldn't want to go that high to match.....and therefore we'd have us a new top tier coach to turn the ship around and sail for the next 10-12yrs. The money will get us a coach. We hafta go above and beyond. Just facts

Don’t drink the koolaid! Do not want some beam me up Scotty cult nut job. Not asking for a Baptist preacher or choir boy... just rather not have someone affiliated with a bunch of cult loving flakes.

I heard on the radio he may have some interest and may have been contacted. If so he definitely moves to number 1 on the coaching list. Lets hope he is tired of the West Coast and lack of publicity.

Petersen should be #1 on anybody's list, but he's not a serious candidate, this gets hashed out every year, his sons health has improved to the point a move wouldn't be a problem, as long as that move was to California. His agent will milk this for all its worth.

He is not a scientologist. That myth has been debunked.

What does a person's religious affiliation have to do with coaching ability?

Here is my two cents, if reports are true that Currie has offered Gruden 10 million and complete control, then why not offer the same to Petersen and Patterson? Both guys are great X's and O's coaches and good recruiters.
