How exactly was he in a no win situation at Texas? Serious question, Texas has a ton of money, resources and facilities.

He had to dismiss a ton of players because they weren't coachable. That turned some prominent Texas HS coaches against him... made it tough to recruit.

False! He left Texas much worse than it was when he arrive there. If Tennessee is stupid enough to let Butch go, whenever would replace would have a lot of talent to work with except maybe at QB and that position would be Better if the QBs currently committed sign for next year.

Worst post I've seen in a few months. He left Herman a good, disciplined roster.

I'm also pretty sure he used Tennessee to get a raise from UL at one time.

Good coach but overhyped by some of our fans. I simply believe we can do much better.

Tennessee could have gotten him if they would have just offered a little bit more money. Clearly, we made a bad call.

I did not want him pre Butch and sure don't want him post Butch. If he could not win at Tx , he has no chance at winning at Tn

You clearly no nothing about football if you don’t understand the situation he had at Texas.

Not my first choice, but we could do worse. Got very raw deal at Texas. As some said, he never had full support. In addition to that he walked into a mess of entitled criminals. He cleans house and gets fired for his troubles. I do think OLe Miss would be ideal, but I would be ok with him in Knoxville.

This type of argument will be used for Butch Jones in his next gig.

What the heck is with all these coaches people are throwing everywhere. I cant believe some of you guys really want some of theses mediocre coaches.........some of these good coaches who are totally unproven, and just some decent coaches............

If your going up proven........why not just want Venables or something like that?

If you want an 8 or 9 win coach.......why not at least WISH for better?

You’re looking thru Vol goggles if you think we were worse off than what Mack Brown did to that program in his last two years. Strong definitely took over a horrible job.

They had top rated classes all the way to the end of Brown’s time. Usually committed a year early. The culture and fundamentals were stagnant...like the end of Fulmer’s tenure, but the roster was littered with high school All-Americans. You have your anti-Butch goggles on to say Dooley left a better mess.

I posted his exact situation on this board when he was hired. Predicted failure because I didn’t see him playing golf and eating BBQ with the big oil and other boosters. I did expect him to be able to coach talent and that fell apart. Worst was talent he landed himself. He wasn’t in the best political situation but failed in the coaching department. I think I “no” a decent amount of football. :wink2:

When half the boosters don’t support you from Day 1, that program becomes toxic. Look what happened to It in Mack’s last two seasons.

If you “no” football, Brown’s program didn’t suffer from lack of resources. Flush with money and he landed great recruiting classes hand over fist. Coaching fundamentals went to crap. You had All-American OL blocking for All-American RB’s and QB’s and WR’s and they all looked like walk-ons. That’s not booster support...that’s stagnant coaching. Started hiring a different S&C guy every season (remember when they “stole” Bennie Wylie?) and nothing worked. Strong beats Kansas last season and he’s still in that “toxic” situation. COACHING failure succeeded by more coaching failure. Strong is a very good coach and his performance at Louisville confirms that. He’s not the kind of hire that takes us further...just ain’t.

Dudes gonna go 12-0 this year. If he crashes the the top 5 or 6, he’s gonna get offers. Dude got a bad rap at Texas. Walked into a no win situation.

Should have ponied up the money to get him here after he went back to UL. Has a chip on his shoulder with Florida hiring over him because of his wife and can recruit South florida better than anyone. He’s worth a look if we go cheap route (which is likely). Not a top 3 choice but definitely top 5. Especially if he goes 12-0.

Honestly, I see him getting an offer from Ole Miss as his recruiting prowess would be huge for them given the world of hurt their gonna be in.

If it came to us and Ole Miss could and would the Rebels be willing to outbid us for him?

I could see them being willing to anti-up more than us if they have the means as they need an image makeover with their next coaching hire 10x more than us.
