+1000. I don't understand this notion that all of these high character guys can't play football. What good is a 5 star guy that gets kicked off the team because he can't stay out of trouble. Guy on Tony B yesterday said the difference in 3 star and 5 star is fraction of seconds in 40's and a couple of inches in height or a few extra pounds. Another coach was quoted as saying that if Nick Reveiz was 2 inches taller he would have 40 scholarship offers. Instead he was rated where he was. I think the kid has turned out to be a good football player. Lets all just relax on these questions and let dooley do his thing.

They aren't mutually exclusive by any means, but neither is it anywhere close to being the norm. We can all wish that it was, but its not.

You take a CB with a 4.0 GPA who does 50 hours of charity work a week, and who runs a 4.6 in the 40.

I'll take the WR who can only play on Saturdays because he's on work-release but runs a sub 4.4 in the 40 and I'll beat your brains out.

Every. Single. Play.

Saying you prefer the former over the latter - especially when you're paid millions of dollars per year to get the ball in the endzone - is curious at best, and asinine at worst.

The Longest Yard should clear up any misconceptions on this topic.

Yeah, look at all the football national titles Army, Navy, and Air Force have racked up the last 50 years.

Read my frigging post! I clearly stated I was referring to the military itself that serves in battle fields and the skies. Obviously not the football teams.

Exactly. I was simply trying to put your post in a context that might make it remotely relevant to this forum, since you seemed incapable of doing that yourself.

Understood. My point is, character can and does lead to champ form. Now, the reason I didn't refer to the military football teams is that character nothwithstanding, they can't focus on football. They have to endure training, mission simulations, actual service, drills, and it goes on and on. I honestly don't know why they have sports teams. But character is something they focus on in their service personnel and it had had great results in battles. In other words, don't knock character.

Example again: That team of deaf boys I posted previously. i711.com - Relay & Beyond

You take the deaf guys. I'll take the DeMarcus Cousins of the world and annihilate them. Character is something for coaches who can't recruit talent to babble about in order to appease their fanbase. "We're never going to win a conference title, but our guys help old women across the street and sign autographs for kids. That should be good enough."

I do think you can have a balance of the two though. Ultimately Dooley or a coach is paid to win games, but they should also strive to help the young men to grow as people off the field as well.

Again, especially in this day and age of high salaries a coach's number one job is to win games, but you also do your players a disservice if you do not encourage them grow as people off the field.

So do I. However, no amount of community service hours or dean's list appearances by his players is going to save a coach who's going 5-7 every year. The name of the game is winning.

Totally agree. I saw Dooley speak at a benefit for the Sertoma Center a week ago and my wife with so impressed with him and his talk of character building etc.

I essentially said the same thing... that's all well and good but if he doesn't win, character building means nothing because he will be fired.

Hoodlums and thugs who get their butts thrown in jail, off the team etc can't win games because they aren't on the field enough. I'm not against having talent, obviously it's necessary no matter how good (or bad) your coach is. But if all they can bring is trouble, you won't get far due to the constant discord. Again, I say don't knock character, it does count.

Yep, that just killed Jimmy Johnson at Miami...oh wait.

The mid '90s Cowboys are looking at their 3 Super Bowl rings and wondering what the Hell you are talking about.

The JJ era was just that, his era. Today, schools won't tolerate that kind of thing. They can't afford to. Laws, policies, penalties and such would have strangled the JJ Miami teams if their behavior occurred these days.

I wasn't aware that there were no laws in the '80s. Must have been a rough world.

News laws, new policies regarding what players and coaches got away with in the past have changed things. Not to mean nothing ever happens (USC) but enforcement is stricter these days due to image consciousness.

You can stop playing on this as I'm sure you know what I mean. In any case I'm done with this, got better things to do right now.

You're right. I had forgotten about the ban on endzone celebrations that Miami caused. Totally changed the landscape of College Football.

Character with no talent is the same as Talent with no Character. Neither is going to be productive on the field due to their handi-caps. I would take though a guy with 3* talent who works his butt off in the gym everyday, understands the playbook, and has a team mindset over a 5*player who can't or won't read the playbook, is not giving it his all, and is more concerned about staying healthy for the NFL than playing hard in a game.

Handicap: One of the dumbest Vols of all time.

Agreed. I'm taking the third guy over the first two guys on my team all day long, due to their "handicaps".
