I don't want Jones fired by any means. I think he's the man for the job. My concern is regarding his loyalty to Bajakian. Bajakian's playcalling sometimes just makes no sense to me, and I think the rest of the world feels that way as well, but it doesn't seem like Butch sees anything wrong with it, and that concerns me.
For instance, the "bubble screen" play we run. The one where the QB takes the snap and immediately throws directly left or right to a receiver in the flat. It felt like we ran that play 100 times against UF. Now here's my problem, with our playmakers at WR you're almost guaranteed to get at least 3-5 yards off it, but it's very unlikely that you will get more than 7. It's a great play call in short yardage situations. However, there were several instances where we were in 3rd and 10 situations and Bajakian would call that play. And what would it do? It would get us about 5 yards and we would punt. It's not a play that's designed to get big yardage, but Bajakian repeatedly called it in crucial big yardage situations.
Another situation was I believe in the 4th qtr. The UF defense was gassed. We started running Hurd to the outside. All we had to do was get the ball to field goal range, and Hurd was finally coming alive. It felt like he was getting 8 yards on every carry that drive. We gave the ball to him 3 times, he got us first downs, then we decide to throw for 3 downs and don't connect. Why??? We were finally pounding through their defense. That was very Chaney-esque.
Speaking of Chaney-esque, I'm still sore about the 5-wide, empty backfield call on 3rd and 2 at the goal against Oklahoma. That was right out of Chaney's playbook. Just like in 2012 S. Carolina when Bray was stripped at the end by Clowney. Neal had finally started running all over them, and they couldn't stop him that drive. Why in the world do you call a pass play there?
But I'm digressing. Long story short, I'm not saying fire anyone. I'm saying the coaches need to do better. Games like the Florida game can tell you a lot about how some coaches are going to fare here, and even though I'm not saying to fire him, Bajakian is on my personal hot seat.
