Carolina Panthers

If I were the Panthers GM I would have taken Dareus and then try to get Luck next season.

I'm in disbelief as to why so many people passionately speak out against Cam. If you want to call him a risk, that's fine, but I don't understand this anti-Cam mob.
You can't deny that he's a risk, I'll give them that. You also can't deny that he's got the most upside in this draft.
I enjoyed his interviews with Charlotte radio last night. I am looking forward to his future with the Panthers.
I wonder if Garrard is an option for us now with Gabbert going to Jax, and Shula being in Charlotte. That coudl help Cam a lot.

People are letting the pay-for-play influence their opinion too much. He may bust, I don't expect him too. I think it's just as likely that he ends up being the best player in the draft.

You are exactly right. People are letting his pay-for-play deal cloud their vision of how good this guy really could be.
Even if he isn't the superstar that he could be, I still think there's zero chance that he isn't better than Jimmy Clausen.
I heard Jordan Gross on the radio this morning, and he said Cam is coming in tomorrow to participate in Gross's charity kickball tournament. Great PR move.
I just wonder if he's going to succeed in a pro-style kickball game.

I could be better than the ostrich. :p

Panthro, your wish is granted.

I'm not sold on Newton at all, but any player who becomes a Panther will have my support 110%. I hope this kid can be the franchise QB we've never had.

It was a desperation pick. With the worst O last year they had to do something drastic & anybody would be an upgrade from Jimmy.

Watch the interview with Gruden. On the field throwing and running he's other worldly. In the interview/film discussion he's third worldly. Saying he's a risk is Jamarcus Russell-esque.

And we all know interviews are just as important as "on the field throwing and running," which are "other worldly."
Remember, there Titans fan, Newton scored higher on the wonderlic than Jake Locker.

I'm not speaking out against him, I just have some concerns about how he will adapt to being an NFL QB.

It's not the interview per se. It's that he was clueless. He's been playing football all his life and when put on the spot he could not recite a single play.. He either A: Never called a play in his life. OR, B: Forgot every play. When asked to diagram a play on the board he basically drew the equivelant of what my 1st grader brings home daily from school.. "Throwing and Running", as you pointed out, is important, but I'm sure you want him throwing to the right team and running in the right direction. BTW, I never said Jake was my man nor did I imply Cam was stupid, he is a product of the teams he played for and I've said before that UF, Blinn JC, and AU did not do Cam any justice in their offensive systems.

Exactly... His athleticism has gotten him by on every level without having to be an actual QB. Ain't gonna cut it in the NFL. I'll be shocked if he's still listed as a QB in four years time.

I still think you guys are looking for something to complain about with the Gruden thing. He asked for him to call a play he used at Auburn. They didn't have elaborate plays to call in the huddle at Auburn. I'm not seeing how that's his fault. He drew a blank because there was no play to recollect from Auburn. It would be like if you asked a Falcons fan to describe a time they did something classy. They'd blank because there just isn't anything to say that would satisfy the question.
If Gruden had asked to call any play, that would have been different, but he asked him to call a play he used at Auburn.
I would have thought more people would be all over his cocky attitude in the piece. The guy has plenty of time to learn the play calling stuff. He's ahead of the game on physical tools. Now he needs to work on other aspects of his game. I feel confident that this coaching staff will get the job done. Remember, coach Chud is the guy that made Derek Anderson look like a good QB in Cleveland a few years ago. When he left for SD, Anderson wasn't successful again.
Gotta love that Newton spent five hours going over plays with the staff on Friday.

Stay classy Panthro, stay classy. :)

It's really not his fault but it's a huge problem in a huddle.

"What's the play?"

"36"

"What?"

Is he going to learn the playcalling or he's just going to say screw it, I'm a better athlete than everyone else?

his "ammunition" analogy also made me want to turn off the video from sheer sense of embarrasment.

not ragging on the guy just for the sake of it, but on the surface there seem to be a few issues that will be there as he tries to adapt, and the panthers aren't exactly the best known organization to have a qb developed successfully in. not bashing the panthers or their fans, but it's just how i see it.

Luckily, this isn't the same staff that has failed in progressing QBs in the past. Though, you have to give credit for what even they did with Delhomme...for a while.
This staff has Chud and Shula, who will both hopefully be able to get the most out of Cam. Cam is a boom or bust guy for sure, I'm just more on the optimistic side than some of the rest of you right now.
Let's move on. How about the rest of the draft? I actually found it average for Carolina. I like the McClain pick, but think we could have done better than picking Brandon Hogan where we did. Talk about a real boom or bust! This guy may have talent, but he sure is a risk. If he's not in custody of Charlotte's finest soon, he will still have to beat injury issues. Some believe Rivera is enough of a hard-ass to where he'll keep these guys in line, but I would have prefered someone else with that pick. I did, however, love our 7th round compensatory pick. Lee Ziemba should not have still be available there. Four year o-line starter for Auburn, who has experience with Cam. I like it. He could move to RG and get a lot of PT this year.

Gus Malzahn was on WFNZ, and he addressed the common criticisms about Cam. He also reiterated that they do NOT run a spread offense. Seemed unsure of why everyone thinks that.

- Simple Offense: Nothing simple about the offense, the only thing simple is the communication from coaches to the field. Cam had to read the defense and call the O-Line Protection schemes based off of what he saw. Most pass plays had multiple progressions despite what anyone thinks. He said that Cam is very intelligent and will have no probelm picking up NFL verbage and laughed at all the criticism received based off of Gruden's QB Camp. He also mentioned that Cam came in that spring and picked everything up very quickly.

- Cam ran too much: Malzahn said that the first few games of the season he had to encourage Cam to run more. Cam wanted to stay in the pocket. The majority of plays Cam tucked the ball and ran, was because that was the play call.

- Fake Smile: Malzahn said Cam never has a bad day. He is one of the most genuine people he had ever met and he brings a positive attitude everyday. Something along the lines of "If everyone was like Cam, the world would be a better place" With regards to all the bad character concerns and past transgressions that came about during the season, he mentioned that Cam is one of the most mentally tough individuals he had ever met and never let any outside criticism affect him or the team.

Lastly, Malzahn said we got a great lineman in Lee Ziemba. Said the guy is one of the toughest guys in all of college football and will be a solid pro.

I know this is interview is the equivalent of someone's mom endorsing them... but hearing the way Malzahn talked about Cam only reinforced the fact that I think good things could be in Carolina's future.

Malzahn also took Mustain throwing over McFadden, Jones and Hillis running.

Simple reason for that: One of those guys listed was a prized recruit whose coattails Malzahn got a nice, cushy ride on en route to one of the most inexplicable careers in the history of cfb.

Can't wait to see what what happen in the next couple of days. I think resigning Johnson will be priority #1, while Williams comes in at a close second.
After the way Anderson played last year, I wonder if he's become more of a priority than Davis.

Kevin Payne is now a Panther. Could be a good signing as long as he brings both of his knees.
Also, am I talking to myself on this thread?

Don't think Smith showed up today. I read that Matt Moore was the only one to show up and leave without a play book. When someone asked him (stupid question) what number will Newton wear, he said, "who knows, maybe #3." Moore is/was #3.
I hate to see him go. I'd rather see him start the season than Clausen to give Newton more time. Moore started three games last year and threw six TDs. Clausen started 13 games, and threw for three TDs.
