Can we please get a GIF of this...

My grandmaw used buttermilk and mayonaise in her cornbread and heated bacon grease in the cast iron skillet to start the crispy crust as soon as the batter hit the skillet as it went into the oven. I bet a certain poster's grandma probably used boxed cornbread mix in a glass casserole. Now he doesn't like it.

Jeez now fossilfiction has a bad grandma.

This posturing is killing me...."Ya'll are all bona fide, online ****ry boys".

Good on ya'll.

And cornbread is pretty sucky. Its nothing special, a remnant of prior, poorer times for some maybe, an affectation for others.

True test, jeffroes.... do you take the basket of cornbread at cracker barrel???? Or do you take biscuits?

What is your choice????

I thought so.

Dad taught me how to make cornbread when I was old enough to see over the counter. Martha White cornbread and Purity buttermilk. That is all it takes. Mix cornmeal and buttermilk to a consistency that will pour. Line a square, 4” or so deep pan with Crisco, dusted with some cornmeal, preheat oven to 450 degrees pour mix into pan, insert in hot oven, and ready when brown. Every meal with everything. Especially white beans and “wilted lettuce”, onions, radishes, a little hot grease and vinegar. Yum! Goes good with stew too. Had some with my ribs, corn on the cob, baked beans and taters tonight. Kinda like sweet tea or breakfast with grits and country ham for us Tennessee men.

That sounds about right... fold melted butter into mixture and you've got a winner.

What's next? A disdain for apple pie and Andy Griffith? C'mon...

There's nothing better to eat than beans, cornbread, and fried taters. Mmmm...

this has come down to Cracker Barrell being the barometer?

Mom's cast iron cornbread. /end of thread

if that makes me aninternet cracker, so be it

Cornbread and chili!!!

Was wondering when this combination would pop up. It's still good to my taste, even after those weekly grade school lunches of chili cooked with cornbread on top. It was a staple of the Knoxville school system back in the day, may still be for all I know.

With all due respect to CPJ and my southern community, cornbread sucks. I don't see how anyone eats it and actually likes it.

Typical supper for me growing up was skillet-made cornbread, soup beans, fried taters, sometimes along with a slab of fried country ham but sometimes we had salmon patties or other stuff. Sweet tea to drink, of course. Sometimes on weekends we’d have “chocolate gravy” to pour over Mama’s fine biscuits at breakfast.😋

Has anyone else had tomato gravy?

Now, my old man used to freak the whole family out by crumbling his cornbread up in buttermilk, and drinking it like a milkshake. Not for me, no thanks.

Mine too and I think it's one of the most disgusting concoctions of all-time.

For the first time in a very long time, I'm feeling better about a coach the more I see him. I need to see what happens in Y2 but by this time Dooley had already dropped Showergate and Butch had already pitched the big top on his circus of cliches. Probably the cornbread gif is more positive than the last three coaches brought to the program.

Add a couple of eggs, some bacon grease and cook in a cast iron skillet. The skillet that is only used for cornbread. Nothing else.

No sugar. If I wanted a cake, I would make a **** cake.

This all day long. I've made my position on the bread off the southern Gods clear previously.

Okay man. I am thinking you are taking this way too seriously. I didn't back down from anything and I still think it sucks, hence it doesn't do it for me. If you really want to get bent out of shape because a food doesn't resonate with someone then that is your choice. Enjoy your day.

Might I recommend a bullet proof vest?
