Bye bye Butch - Purdue bound (message board rumor)

This is what I've been thinking. Nobody wants to take on our problem.

Or pay the money they would need to pay. It is probably cheaper for most of these schools to afford an up an coming coach than a coach that is making SEC type dollars.

If you believe half of what appears in the media, LSU turned cold on Herman because of the $$'s he asked for.

Charlie Strong, who some say is a good coach, is out there and there doesn't seem to be any takers.

Les Miles keeps getting mentioned but doesn't seem to be anyone's fore runner.

Everyone wants a Saban - trouble is there is only one of them.

IMO, this all needs to settle down so that the focus can turn towards recruiting and working on what needs to be fixed for next year.

Not Larry, but IMO, there was never a possibility Butch would be fired this year.....not after posting 8 or maybe 9 wins. The only way he's not on the sidelines next year is if he decides to leave for another job. Any job open would be at best a lateral move and more likely a step down. Add to that the tremendous amount of money he'd be leaving on the table, and it's a bit silly to imagine him taking another job at this point in time.

agree on the firing part. not very likely at all. I guess it is still possible he could take another job as there are going to be other jobs come open, but that is also appearing to be less likely

You know, I hope he treats his staff like Toretto-ride or die. No need to switch now.

Our fans and evidently a good portion of our boosters are such small minded thinkers. You want to bring in a big name coach and really fix this thing? Give him a say over who the AD is.

that is kind of where this mess we are in all began. We let our coaches have a say in who the athletic director was going to be in 2003. that has worked out really well.

LWS is saying in a nut shell that unless something completely shocking happens like butch retiring, the three will be back for at least one more year. You will want to keep butch this year because there isn't much out there to hire with the current situation with the heads. Unless you guys wanna go backwards like with his example, a Dooley hire.......We need an ad first. No coach is gonna accept a job with an employer they don't know.

the question is easily answered. no one over there with the capability to make that decision. Not going to let Hart and/or Cheek make it. Nothing can happen until new folks arrive

In part. I doubt everyone involved (which is not the lame ducks you listed) is sitting around without some kind of a plan considering they knew Armstrong was shopping Jones. Im sure they had an plan in place if somebody would take him.

Knowing he was trying to leave is grounds enough to start getting your stuff together a little quicker. As I stated above somebody was gonna have to start a search if he left.

Well, if you would like to hire a coach like Derek Dooley your right. No coach with any sense is going to take a job at a school where he has no clue who the person will be that he will be reporting to.

True but I dont think for a second they don't have the AD all but announced.

Unfortunately folks won't read or get this. You absolutely do not move to a job where who your boss will be is unknown to you.

This also is probably a contributing factor to CBJ checking out the waters. I suspect coaches of other sports may do the same thing as all this unwinds especially if the new AD is someone totally out of left field. It happens in businesses all the time.

I this all the time. You can't turn your head back unless you can keep the WR on your hip or stay in contact with your hands. Otherwise, you look back, the WR breaks off the route and your toast.

We need better DBs, period.

Need to start by getting a better DB Coach and see how the secondary looks. We have tons of guys who were 4* in 1 or more service..Warrior was a 4* in 247,Rivals and ESPN, Abernathy was a 4* in 2 of those 3,Evan Berry was a 4* in all 3,Buchanon was a 3* in all 3 as was Cam,Foreman,Griffin and Mosely, Gaulden was a 4* in one of them,TKJr was a 4* in all 3,Justin Martin was a 4* in all 3,O Osbourne was a 4* in all 3, Henderson who was a Juco and yet to play was a 3* in them all, Taylor was a Consensus 4* and even though he has changed positions McDowell was a Consensus 4* safety out of HS. So we have 8 secondary players that were consensus 4* and that isn't including the secondary players that we had on campus that transferred out before we could see how they turned out. So the coach's either need to rethink how they evaluate players or I'm going with this theory that we hire a secondary coach that can actually coach these guys up and teach them how to cover, tackle and maybe get a few Int's in the process. The secondary has sucked since Terry Fair left and Martinez had to be the sole secondary coach. Which he has shown he is not a SEC caliber DB Coach. He's a good recruiter but that is it. We can bring Fair back and not miss a beat in recruiting and possibly improve there and definitely improve our secondary. I'm tired of seeing players consistently out of position and usually trying to chase down guys before they get to the end zone, always taking bad angles to the football, penalties have killed them too, tacking has been poor at more times than not and our DB's and Safety's aren't getting many int's. But that is kinda hard to do when they are out of position and constantly chasing down the receivers that just burned them. That is a coaching change that HAS to be made.

I'm just not as confident of that as you are. I believe we would have a very chaotic situation if he suddenly left.

Most likely, it would be to appoint someone interim coach (I've heard Gillespie or Stripling) until AD hired to do coaching search. This was speculation not a plan.

A lot of head coaches put feelers out to see where they stand.

Im sure thats true in some cases.

I just don't buy it with this one. The new has worn off and I don't think Jones likes the bad that comes with a job like this one.

It seems to me this thread is concerning something about having lunch with Pancho Villa. If Butch arrives by plane in Juarez, then there will more to talk about relative to what is consumed by one or both guests at the table. Then, too, there is a chance that many of you have also had lunch with Pancho Villa in the past. :eek:lol:

Whoever comes up with that stuff has
entirely too much time on their hands.

I don't disagree but push comes to shove no one can say anything different.

He is not going anywhere. They have checked around and there is not any interest out there in hiring him. He will be here

Sounds like even the midlevel or bottom feeders have more intelligent AD's than we have had. Thank god that change is coming.

Dana Holgerson was promoted to HC when Bill Stewart unexpectedly died, and WVU has had a change in President and AD since he was hired. He's a Mike Leach diciple and while I don't think he is the next coming of Urban Meyer or Nick Saban, I surely wouldn't trade Holgerson for Butch at this point. He at least knows X's and O's on offense and doesn't rely on cliches to pull the wool over people's eyes.

This would be an even trade at best. I watch WVU a lot and Holgorson isn't anywhere close to the second coming of General Neyland.

He will be a coach that puts up a whole lot more 6-6s and 7-5s than 10-2s.

BTW, Holgorson was promoted before Stewart died. Luck discovered that Stewart was trying to dig up dirt on Holgorson in a power play to subvert the eventual promotion. Luck forced Stewart out and made the promotion early. And that, my friends, is decisive leadership.

This time frame is terrible, UT can't hire a coach because it doesn't have a AD, recruiting will not get better with all other coaches pointing out the obvious Butch situation. How much will it cost in the long term by having a lame duck for another year, UT will not be more attractive after next year. Total cluster!
