Butch says it takes 6 to 7 years to build a program in the SEC

I think every situation is different. i think coming from our situation when Butch arrived to get us back to what we had in the 90s, sure it might take a total of 6-7 years before we a consistently dominant. Doesn't mean we can't have a wonderful and special season before that. People forget that programs are built over time - as long as we continue forward and see improvement every step of the way I don't see why we should be upset by these comments. It means he's building for the future instead of just the immidiate success. And honostly id rather be a long burning fire then a flash in the pan. If it takes three more years to win a championship and be in the National Championship talk every year I'll take that in a heart beat. Just show me reasons to think between now and then we are headed in that direction...

Fulmer didn't have to rebuild he inherited a loaded roster. Florida didn't need a complete rebuild like we did. McElwain inherited a loaded defense and thats what he's winning with. Coming out of the Kiffin/Dooley era 4-5 years before being able to match up against the top SEC teams us not unreasonable for Tennessee. If we had the in state recruits like Georgia and Florida have then 3 years would be reasonable.

We shouldn't compare Butch and Fulmer at year three. I agree. I do believe with the current state of the SEC East Butch had a great opportunity to make some noise this year and will be in good shape next year with the Gators coming to Knoxville. Georgia has always been fertile ground for us and we should be able to pillage that state for talent.

He is not saying it takes 6-7 years to win or compete for championships. What I think he is saying is that it takes that much time to have your culture completely in place and have quality numbers at every position.

I know it may not sound good because there is a great chance for a very nice season next year but it may be a while before that old feeling comes back year in and year out knowing the Vols are competing for sec championship games every year. I remember the road to Atlanta was whoever wins the TN FLA game. That game alone was the focus for several years compared to recent years of hoping to be respectful with a few sec wins. JMO

We need to get it back to a two team race in the East again. That appears to be a possibility with the recent meltdown in Athens. I was hoping the two team race would be UGA and UT with Florida having a multi-year rebuild and some more coaching churn but it looks like they may have a good coach this time.

Butch Jones: It takes six or seven years in the SEC to build a program

An excerpt from the article...

While we live in a world of instant gratification, Jones — just in his 3rd season in Knoxville — scaled back expectations a little and indicated that he may need an additional three years at the least to fully bring the Vols back to prominence. Jones identified weak spots right now in the program such as the offensive line, defensive line and receivers.

Cool story bro.

Agree. Florida is the fly at the dinner table that will not go away.

If he means 6 yrs to win a championship ok, that's how long it took CFP (who happened to be 11-1 yr 3).

Majors left Phil with a lot of talent. Different situation. Butch is probably trolling the fan base a little bit. I think we are another recruiting class away from being major players. Hope he finishes strong with 2016 class.

Just curious why a Florida fan has more than 9,000 posts on a Tennessee board.

Btw, having Ray Goff at Georgia, Sparky Woods and Brad Scott at USC jr., Ken Hatfield and Tommy West at Clemson made recruiting almost to easy for Fulmer. He owned South Carolina and took the the top talent from North Georgia most years.

If Fulmer inherited a "loaded" roster, then he sure as heck kept it well stocked with elite talent through his tenure as head coach.

Probably not the best timing of that opinion with a divisional opponent looking at returning to the SEC Championship game in year one of a "rebuild". Butch needs to win out and get to Atlanta next year.

Year one of "rebuild" for Florida this year does not compare to year one of "rebuild" for us under Butch. They didn't have half of the attrition we did.

The two years prior to Butch were as bad as the two years prior to coach yellow teeth taking over the Gators. Florida is in year one and we are in year three. I just stated the timing for this type of comment is not good when our most hated divisional rival is having one of the best years in the history of their program in year one of a "rebuild".

He's sooo full of BS, and basically he puts this out there when he doesn't win the EAST next year, and he can come back and say "nobody wants to win more than I do" and it takes time............he's basically tryin to buy more time after next year if he doesn't win the EAST

It actually does take 6-7 years if you are Butch Jones and you are doing on the job training. He is just setting the fans up for next year when he has those in games melt downs.

Gators coach disagrees with BJ

Oh yeah I forgot, JM took over the exact same situation that Butch did. So did every other coach in the SEC right?

The Dooley years were significantly worse than what UF has had to deal with. Its not even close.

Fans are going to expect a win over Florida or Bama next year. If we lose both, again, people will be shouting for his head.

It was on 11/4 Vol Calls. He was speaking more like it takes 6 or 7 years for your roster to be at full strength. He mentions having seniors and RS juniors as your leaders. Seems like 5 or 6 years makes more sense... but I suppose it can take a couple of years to get your organization rolling, then it takes solid recruiting every year. Butch might be ahead of schedule.

CBJ just needs to quit with the bs talk and go get it done. The fan base doesn't want to hear about being a young team anymore. There will be experience and upperclassman all over the field next year. Win the east first and foremost and compete for championships!!
