Butch says it takes 6 to 7 years to build a program in the SEC

Alright I guess I am going to have to agree to disagree. I don't believe our situation is comparable and yes, I believe playing in today's SEC is a big part of the problem.

was it a problem at bama? Florida is about to win the east in yr 1 after being picked ahead of only ky and vandy..why wasn't it a problem f them?

that hardly matters...bama was a mess under shula, and obviously why he was fired..saban comes in goes 26-2 with a nat'l title his first 2 yrs..if my point is wrong, again I will ask..where are the successful coaches at traditional powrs like tennessee that didnt win big by yr 2-3?

That topic has been discussed at great length in this thread: http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/246843-coaches-4-a.html. As you will see, there are a lot of exceptions to the premise that you cited.

ok...the word is parse, but answer this question for me...why do you think he mentioned what a guy told him about 6-7 yrs? In the real world, for proper context, if you could.

You're correct on the typo.
It was in a general conversation with Bob Kessling. That's all. Nothing more and nothing less. People trying to read more into every single word this guy says is hilarious. SCOTUS justices words aren't parsed (see how I corrected that) and scrutinized like this guy's and they DO send messages. It's absurd what many on here do.

Probably 500 of these posts were made by people totally ignorant of what was said by Butch. They need to take the hooks out of their mouths.

Butch was not making excuses... they were talking about red shirting players.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Facts be damned. Context be damned.

I think you guys shut em down...next round's on me.

So you admit you don't know what the hell you're talking about yet you have no problem bashing the coach? Hmmm makes sense to me.

I listened to it. Butch says "we still need a few more seasons and someone told me it takes 6-7 years in the SEC and that's what people don't get. We can't fix problems in 2-3 recruiting classes it takes time." I'm not sure, SDS, Dopriak or anyone here has spun that. That explicitly means we need more time.

Admitting I haven't seen the link posted, before you mentioned it, means nothing. It means I don't have time to read 500+ consecutive posts, as I stated.

is it really that hard to answer a simple question? why did he mention what a guy told him about 6-7 yrs?

Some of you guys have as much sense as a bag of hammers...he mentions the guy/6-7 yrs because he is in general agreement with the statement...otherwise, what is the point of mentioning it? Did he mention the guy who said he thinks we should win the sec next year? Good grief.

Really, does every single word spewing out of Butch's pie hole need to be analyzed to no end? He's a damn football coach... not a poet, not a writer, not the chair of the Federal Reserve giving out hints about interest rates. He's just shooting the **** on a weekly radio show that has to fill and hour of programming for the sheep.

He'll probably be maxed out with RS juniors and seniors in three years. Most coaches talk up their opponents and regurgitate the deficiencies in their own programs. The exceptions are Kiffin and Spurrier's smart jabs. Just tune it out and don't take the bait from the unknown beat writers trying to stir **** up.

I've now listened to the question and answer. My understanding of what was said hasn't changed. It has nothing to do with Dopriak's tweet. Butch unequivocally said he needs more time for this team to be where he wants it. It takes 5 years to have RS SR and 4 years to have RS Jr's, not 7.

CBJ is in year 3 and most people are tired of hearing him talk. Yeah we get that he wants to build a program and not just a team but damn butch, quit talking and win. I get that he has done wonders compared to what the last coach ever did but the bottom line is we are 4-4 right now. I don't want to hear what we are projected win because nobody knows with this coaching staff until the scoreboard has all zeros. We are 4-4 right now and y'all can spin that like its 8 or 9 wins but do you really know that for sure? I really wish he would take the approach michigan's coach takes by letting the play on the field do the talking

If you are simply adding up the years, then yes... 4 and 5. However if you start with an empty tank you are putting more of your true freshman on the field than is ideal in the early years.

I'll take it as TN will continue to build up a deeper, more experienced, mature roster for 7 years. After that, you're just bringing them in and filling spots created by graduating players.

One other variable to consider... every class is not equal. Some classes will not be as good as earlier groups so it's not a linear path with annual upgrades to the roster.

So many of these dolt "fans" just want to attack every little insignificant spin coming out of the coach's mouth. Never mind if the excellent recruiting classes are rolling in or that the team is now way more competitive with every opponent... it's better to whine endlessly about every play call, substitution, and nugget of coach speak.

Last year there were 6 losses and two years ago there were 7... some of those were curb stompings of epic proportions. The W-L record isn't the only way to measure progress.

I suppose if TN was 7-1 right now the Nega Vols would be giving the credit to the previous regime for leaving Butch with a great roster.

My eyeballs are bleeding after reading all of the garbage in this thread.

To argue Florida was stacked with talent is crazy, they're just two years removed from losing to Georgia southern. GEORGIA FREAKING SOUTHERN!! And now they're in the seccg. That's has everything to do with coaching.

Florida recruiting: 247 rankings

2009- #7 (4th in SEC)- 4 (5*) and 7 (4*)

2010- #1- 5 (5*) and 17 (4*)

2011- #11 (5th in SEC)- 1 (5*) and 11 (4*)

2012- #4 (2nd in SEC)- 2 (5*) and 13 (4*)

2013- #3 (2nd in SEC)- 2 (5*) and 13 (4*)

2014- #9 (7th in SEC)- 1 (5*) and 8 (4*)

2015- #21 (10th in SEC)- 2 (5*) and 3 (4*)

Yeah Florida has no talent at all. It ALL depends on coaching. All those 4 and 5* players have nothing to do with it. I mean McElwain walked into a roster filled to the brim with Sun Belt level talent. Yes he has done a good job, but dont make it sound like he walked into a bare cupboard and had to basically rebuild it all.

Either that or the rickybobbys would be complaining about the SEC being down. Its never ending idiocy. Butch gets all the blame when we lose and almost no credit for a win.

Quit torturing yourself and just watch the games. Poring over his interviews and press conferences is not a healthy enterprise for you. You're going to find something to get your blood pressure pinging and we'll be deprived of your future contributions.

I was actually asking you. You've been pretty staunch in your defense of Jones on this. While we disagree and joust at times, I tend to think you are a thoughtful poster.

IMO, at best, Jones misspoke.
that's all it is. go back and listen to the replay of Vol Calls. context matters, and no where in the context of that conversation was he saying, or meaning to say, that the next 4 years should be a pass b/c it takes 6 or 7 years to build a program.

and that's just fact.
I don't think Jones misspoke. I think that a writer is spinning the words to stir up the gullible TN fan base. Clicks generate more advertising dollars.
click whores. and judging by this thread, the johns are more than willing to line up!!!:)
