Butch Jones did not fail

If Butch somehow manages to dig himself out of the hole enough to coach through the remainder of the season, and somehow get to a bowl, we won't have to fire him, he will take another job and give us the middle finger as he rides off into the sunset. I don't see any way in the world after everything that Butch is our coach next year. He's either going to bomb and get fired, or he is going to do just well enough that he will take whatever job he can get that will pay his buyout for him. Either way, we ALL know that this is it for Butch and Tennessee. The only question is how will his narrative finish out.

That's idiotic. I'm not defending Butch but to say that it's all on him is absolutely false. I assume it was Butch's fault that we missed a thousand tackles against Oklahoma and Florida a couple of years back that could've saved the game?

You play like you practice. Former vols that attend practices have told radio personas that the practices are pathetic and powder puff. The head coach is responsible for preparing and coaching his players. Own it

The sad thing for Butch is he was so close so many times. Just a few little tweaks and this could be a world different. Unfortunately he just can't seem to take that next step. And I think it's too late. I don't see any way he can recover now

Jones just can’t get out of his own way, he has managerial issues to go along with an over inflated ego.

Dave Hart is the one that failed. I learned over the years that it is better to aim high and risk coming up short than to aim low and hit the target. Hart aimed low and hit the target. Jones was and is over his head.

I hope Currie aims high.

That's what happens when you make an FSU grad the AD for Tennessee.

This goes back further thab Butch. Hamilton, Lame, Hart, Dooley and Butch ALL failed. Most of all, the powers that be at Tennessee have been the biggest failures of all. Running a HOF coach off and replacing him with nothing but losers.

Agreed. If Fulmer were still here, we would still be winning at least 10 games a season & contending for the playoffs, every year. JMO

If we win out is it too late?

Jones did not fail, he merely ran out of Josh Dobbs

I will actually disagree here. I agree Butch is a horrible talent developer and game day coach, but he has had shot after shot to be successful here and he failed on his own.

We literally could have gone to the sugar bowl last year with a win over V.A.N.D.Y.

Read that again. He failed.

Best post in the thread right here. Imo

It's not often on here you can find fair and honest criticism. Well said.

I'd argue that Butch has been SUCCESSFUL...

At rebuilding our program. Just need someone else to get us over the hump before we start rolling backwards down the hill

I was so angry when it was announced. I though why would we bring some total idiot from with no real experience at all making theses types of hires/decisions and just turn over the biggest decision a 100million a year entity to this guy. You just feel so helpless as a fan. Nobody in our fan base wanted that. We all wanted hart to shoot for the stars. Bama had given us the blueprint. Throw a massive amount of money at a cant miss prospect and it'll pay off 10 fold. But hart took the cowardly approach. Don't over pay for an average guy and they can't fault you. Wrong!

Yes, it was. Sorry dude, it's ultimately his responsibility to get his players to perform and win games, period. If they miss "a thousand tackles" you damn right it's on the head coach. That's how it works.

KB, obviously you can say a lot of missed tackles are coaching ...which it is but in that example, I think the coordinators have something to do with it. Maybe that was a bad example to use...

But I'm not buying that players have no direct result in the failure of potential success. A coach can only do so much until it's in the players hands.

Almost any scenario is on the table outside of beating ALA.

KY and Mizzou both suck. SC and Vandy aren't much better and LSU is playing badly.

Unless something REALLY changes over the bye week I don't see much improvement possible. I hate to say it but I think Butch has lost the team and we play like crap AGAIN and lose to Muschamp AGAIN. After the Alabama beat down we'll probably be lucky to win 2 more games. That's why I'm saying 6 max.

I don't blame Hart. Strong was his guy and after he turned us down Butch lobbied hard for the job. Up until the USC game last season, I believed Butch was a great hire.
I agree, it's pretty short sighted to blame Hart. Strong was only one of many, who wanted nothing to do with the mess they would have inherited. Butch was at least 4th, if not lower down the list, who were offered the job. It was obvious to me in year one, he would not succeed here long term, unless he made significant changes in his thinking. He hasn't, too hard headed. That being said, he HAS improved the program in a number of ways, making the job much more attractive than when he took it on. IMO, we should embrace the positive things he has accomplished, recognize his short comings, and put all our energy into supporting someone capable of taking the program to a championship level.

Sorry but Cut wasn’t turning down a HC job to stay Fulmer’s OC. Without Cut Fulmer is just Butch.

LOT of truth here. Fulmer was an elite recruiter when he wanted to be, but just an average coach. Cut was solely responsible for the prolific offenses / QB play under Fulmer.

Iv heard the same execuses for 5 yrs.players are young, players are hurt,we need to tackle better, ill let you know after I watch the film.Get over it butch jones is not who we need as our coach.....GO VOLS..
