Bring back the Beer Barrel

Bring it back with a new name, or as someone mentioned the flag hoist, or their mascot in our school....... something.........

How about a better tradition: fans of the winning team get unlimited beer after the game in the parking lot!

Let's play for a mason jar....no need to tell anyone what's in.

Hey, if you wanna get blind stinkin' drunk (or possibly just blind) there's really no better way.

(and I say that as someone who does enjoy white whiskey on a regular basis)

That's why all the folks on Rocky Top
Get their corn from a jar

pretty catchy tune ain't it

The reason they stopped using it was reasonable. I would say the trinket was fun, but we can live without it. I don't think you want to risk hurting the feelings of the families invoved with that - unimaginably terrible what they had to go through.

So by your logic, it was right to end a 74-year tradition because it would hurt the feelings of the families of a group of young men who made a bad decision. I understand your opinion, but I do not agree. I doubt the barrel had anything to do with the decision those young men made that day.

Nope...

Can you imagine the outcry from people with sensitive teeth?

Clearly, it needs to be renamed the Tepid Water Barrel.

Seriously, the obvious solution here is for someone to steal the barrel and tote it out to the field at game time. Voila, tradition restored.

All you guys who claim to be REAL FANS, here's your chance to prove it! loco.gif

yesterday some one posted a thread with a picture of the barrel. does anyone remember the thread? i would like to use it as my avatar.

Wondering just where the barrel is now? Is it still somewhere on campus displayed or did that thing end up the coolest coffee table in a den somewhere? LOL

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?
I'm not for anything which makes this game seem like a rivalry...

What does the beer barrel have to do with Kentucky anyway (25)? And they're the ones who do the drinking and driving.

Because of the current social stigma attached with alcohol, especially with DUI's, the name "Beer Barrel is not going to be resurrected, but why not just change the name of the "trophy," calling it the "nail keg battle" or something similar. That wouldn't have any stigma and would allow the symbolism attached to the game to be returned.

What social stigma? Pretty well accepted as the norm.
