Breaking: Ricky Gibson to the portal

You don’t set a talent like Ricky Gibson aside. I used to be emotional. If he doesn’t want to be here, don’t let the door hit him in the rear. But now it’s business. He is just trying to do what’s best for his family even if it is misguided. You sit down with him and negotiate a deal to keep him here. Just like we did with Matthews.

Unless he is a cancer, then hit the road.
We just sit down and negotiated a deal after the season. Now we need to sit down and negotiate another deal?? That kind of crap is a cancer. When you negotiate a deal for upcoming season you honor it.

It feels like college football is just professional football nowadays. They shouldn't be making money to play at college, that's not why you play. You play for an education or to eventually go pro. I guess now they already are pro, but...

The problem is that we've already negotiated that deal. It was done in Dec. And both sides obviously thought it was a fair deal. Now he wants more money 2 months later because he has more leverage.

I would tell him to kick rocks if I was coach.

Say UT had the chance to get somebody like Aaron Scott from Ohio State in the upcoming portal and recruited straight over Gibson, no matter what deal or promises they made, is that a sh|¥¥y thing to do or just the team looking out for their interests?

It goes both ways. Recruiting guys and then recruiting right over them and telling them to hit the portal is normal. Sucks when the shoe is on the other foot.

That’s fine and all but Gibson had already negotiated an NIL deal then used McCoy’s injuries to leverage more money as an excuse.

Call it whatever you want but it’s a d*ck move, especially towards his teammates.

Is the leverage McCoy’s injury or another collective offering him more money?

You just can't let players hold the program for ransom and get away with it. Yes it will be a big loss but you can't set a precedence here. Got to be a couple of good corners in the portal. Save the NIL $ for them.

This isn’t just like Matthews. Matthews got his deal done at the end of the season. Matthews wasn’t only about money. This is a shakedown. Period.

Don't let him go and sue him for breach of NIL contract. Not a good move but may send a msg. Could this be possible? Would this not be interesting? It would be painful for us but other schools would follow.

We pretty much have no choice in the matter. We can go into the season with zero starting caliber outside corners. He'll get paid and probably never enter the portal officially. He can't enter for at least another month anyway

There is no way Tennessee can bow down to him at this time. If they do, our Athletic Department will be torn to shreds. He is a decent CB, but he can be replaced by someone who is chomping at the bit to show his abilities. We has all Spring and Summer to get players ready to play in the Fall. He has given up his fair share of big plays and is not worth tearing the team apart.

NIL is so good for the college game isn’t it? I mean why isn’t everyone happy for kid finally gettin his? All I’ve heard is how illegal and exploitive and abusive the prior system was so we should all be celebrating this guy taking the cash and splitting. Commitment is a punch line now

--Last season Gibson started at cornerback and was the 2nd best CB on the team, had a good year
--Gibson renegotiated his NIL deal after last year based on the year that he had.
--Gibson agreed to the deal and went away happy
--McCoy, the top CB on the team and should be a preseason All American injured his knee in offseason
--McCoy may miss the first month of the season or more if he doesn't heal quickly
--Gibson looked at this dilemma and decided he was more important than team.
--Gibson feels like he is now more valuable to the team
--Gibson threatened to walk if the Vols didn't pay him more money
--At this point, UT has called his bluff
--Gibson announces his intention to enter the portal after spring practice (Next time the portal is open)

The Vols have to decide if Gibson who is a solid CB but not even all conference level is worth the money he is demanding. They also have to determine what this could do to the rest of the team when they see Gibson was successful in getting more money by being selfish.

I would have written this in crayons but its too messy on my screen.

Bye bye. This all about me mentality flies in the face of team concepts in sports. There is a right way to do things and this isn’t it. I’m all for players getting paid but renegotiating every year is B.S.

Why? You can negotiate every year with your job and leave for more money whenever you want.

I agree with you BTW but what I posted above is what’s always thrown in my face

Hey props to him if he can get his money. I am just of the opinion he isn't the guy worth setting a bad precedent for.

It’s not even like professional. There’s zero reason to honor a contract anymore in college. Pros at least have protections for the teams.

D*ck moves happen all the time in business. Remember Haslam at Pilot "jacking the discount" and not paying drivers the fuel rebates they deserved? Did everyone here insist we stop taking Haslam money or would you suggest it now?

Being a d*ck in business is the calling card of UT for helping sue the NCAA into oblivion on multiple occasions, yet here we are as supporters.

Gibson took care of Gibson which is what a good UT education should teach students. I cannot fault the guy for doing what we've cheered UT for doing....... taking care of business, even at the expense of telling players we recruited to leave the program to make space for better guys, so the business does better.

Rickey Gibson took care of the business that is Rickey Gibson. We expect UT to do that, even if it means some players get pushed out of the program, so we can't fault the players for applying leverage on the program when they have the chance.
