BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

I agree BZ - I think this is far from over. It would not surprise me to hear/see CCM's name tossed around in connection with other jobs if for no other reason to try to leverage Tennessee if in fact he even wants to be here, which I doubt. It is business after all.

I just haven't heard enough "Cuonzo Martin will sign an extension with Tennessee" talk. I mean it is assumed by everyone that he will but you'd think you'd hear more about him and Dave Hart agreeing in principle to a new deal or something along those lines.

Everything has been "Cuonzo withdrew his name from the Marquette search" but there's been no new contract with him at UT. And that absolutely has to happen if he's going to coach here next season.

Are there any other big college openings currently or any rumors about job openings? Heard something about Cal possibly. Just wondering if we will have to endure this again in the next few weeks.

I agree with you for the most part, however demonstrating that you're a solid FT shooter should help your draft status. Now if next season he can demonstrate he's a solid 15' jump shooter I believe that would also be a feather in his cap.

If a prospect has never demonstrated an ability to shoot FT's or jump shots, then the NBA doesn't know if that potential exists. There are lots of examples of NBA bigs that still can't shoot a FT or jump shot with any degree of confidence. To me, an NBA scout would give Stokes a higher ceiling on his NBA potential if he was confident in both those skills.

I get what you are saying, but IMO if all that is standing between a player from being a 1st round value is a jump shot then they would draft him and develop his jump shot. The NBA will draft European players that can barely even play basketball. I know they aren't as bad as they used to be in that sense, but they still do it.

Wake Forest and BC off the top of my head.

Yes of course he removed his name from consideration after he found out they were hiring Wojo. Doubtful it was totally his decision.

Call me crazy but I suspect that Hart had already made his proposal (maybe $250,000 to $400,000 raise plus an extension and buyout (buyout might not be to CCM liking)) to CCM prior to the Marquette interview. And CCM neither accepted or rejected the offer.

Cuonzo Martin will not be interviewing anywhere else. The Marquette interview was just a ploy to get a raise.
Bruce Pearl did the same thing once when he acted like he was going to go to Memphis.

Tony Basilio' s interpretation of the situation is just stupid. Cuonzo pulled out of the Marquette search when leading for the job according to actual reporter Gary Parrish.

I wouldn't listen to what Basilio or Clay Travis have to say about coaching searches. They are MORONS who led everyone to believe Jon Gruden was coming to Tennessee.

The N.B.A. is not a developmental league unless you are a lottery pick. He can work on his jump shot in Fort Wayne or Boise, or where ever else they play NBADL surrounded by a group of guys all looking to get theirs...or he could come back to U.T. and work on it. A jump shot isn't going to put him in the lottery regardless, but I think it can put him somewhere between 25 & 32 next year, and give him a better shot to actually stick on a roster.

I was thinking that, too. Many times a school will tell the candidate that they are going with someone else and will allow them to publicly "withdraw from consideration" so that it doesn't look like they were passed over. It is a nice gesture. Not always the case but many times.

When/If a new contract is announced, it will be interesting to see the #'s. IMO, if the #'s are close to what was (allegedly) put in front of CCM before the Michigan game, then it tells me that Marquette decided on Wojo instead of CCM.

On the other hand, if the #'s are higher, then it would appear that CCM's leveraging of UT has worked to his advantage.
JMO, so TIFWIW.

According to Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports it was Zo's job, if he wanted it.

Dont think Pearl ever actually interviewed for the Memphis job.

So is it possible that Martin just screwed himself? If the reports were true that UT might essentially be ready to move on (which I grant you may not be true), and Martin is calling their bluff, what if Hart says "Ok, well bye" and the talk about Marshall was legit?

No. I think he has a much better pulse on this than anyone on this board. Plus, he is still under contract. He would get a buyout if we terminated his contract.

Something still feels odd here. Not sure this whole thing is over just yet.
