This part...I like:
Shoop said the focus on defense will be to put the best 11 players on the field and then scheme to the strengths of those players.

This part...scares me:
Jones has helped him find tweaks that can improve the defense
this is key. i really think that as last year went on, not knowing all the time who would be available to play week in, week out, it became very difficult to scheme to strengths, and avoid weaknesses. given a full year, plenty of tape to review on a multitude of players that got pt this past season, a full off season....
i'll put it this way, if the defense isn't "improved" on the whole, i'll be shocked. i'm betting he'll have a much better grasp on the overall personnel package this year, than he did last year....and be able to sub accordingly.
I try not to count on Freshmen...I'm thinking the 2 deep will be Vickers, Johnson, Mckenzie and Tuttle (if healthy)
Perhaps our overall strategy should be to get the other team off the field quickly to minimize potential for injuries...
And I mean 3 and out...not quick scores...lol!
Sounds like the dissention wasn't limited to a few players. Martinez must have been an issue. You could expect that since he's been a DC before and was probably pretty tight with Jancek.
IF the DT's return in depth... and IF he finds 8 LB's that can give them quality minutes including at least two to play his quick LB position. (Can't remember what he calls it. I think USCe has always called it their "spur" position.) IFFF those things come together for him then he might be able to do some really good things.
Like you, I'll be surprised if there isn't improvement. The question is how much and will it be enough. I still believe in the Shoop hire... I just think he was set up worse than Jones was by Dooley. Not enough quality LB's and a "fragile" roster.
Could be a no name defense. I really think having a handle in all the personnel this time around will pay dividends.
We agree 100% in the 4-3 vs. 4-2-5 he basically had to run

It seems you guys known what your talking about... And I do believe it is the "spur" position.. I know some call it the Star as well... I think that the addition of Gray will play dividends for tht postion depending on how long it takes his body to mature and understand the scheme... Shoop said that he will be diving in to some more 3-4 which I think is interesting and I believe tells his level of comfort with the LB's... I just wonder how it will effect the back end of the defense... Man I wish we would run a pattern match system from Cov. 3... It gives you some nice wrinkles in the run game as well... Especially with your alley players... What are you guys thinking about this?

That may be what he mean't by saying that to the naked eye it wouldn't look that different. If he's keeping the same scheme but moving personnel around that he thinks better fits what he is trying to accomplish. It may also by why Stripling was pulled from the Dline if he wasn't on board with those changes.

"Star" is what I was trying to think of. Thanks. But I wonder if that wasn't a Vandy thing.
You have to be careful with your complexity in CFB. If you try to do too much then all the guys do is think and hesitate for half the season. If I understand correctly, the scheme you have in mind requires every defensive player to make the same "read" every play, right? That would be a tough thing to master.
