Bob Shoop reveals 3 keys to Tennessee defense returning to dominant form

when he has a healthy team with experience he does great things with a defense. That was his key at Vandy and Penn St continuity. I can not ever remember a year when a defense had this many injuries at all levels. He and coach Warren should be on the same page and yes I like our defensive recruit class. Good things coming. Have faith all who doubt. " Peace be unto you"

The only team I can think of that was similar to our number of injuries was Florida 2013. They went from and 11 win team in 2012 to a 4 win team due to injuries.

I think the most interesting comment he mad was that he will be switch from a 4-2-5 look to a 4-3 look this year... Obviously they will have both but they will showcase the 4-3 defense more.... It is interesting toe because of the class we signed and the players we have here... I think there is a lot more versatility in the back end of a defense with 5 then 4 backs... I wonder why the change? Is it because of our lack of pass rush or just his scheme fit or just wanting to get more hats to the box quicker... To simplify some reads for the force defenders... (Usually when you have 5 backs that means that a Safety will have a pass and run read) atleast in my defense... That is interesting to me atleast

"Less drama"

I hate to hear that as a fan. There was drama between the DC and other coaches? Sheesh.

Maybe it says something that he stuck around. If I had to speculate I'd say Martinez was the issue.

No hope of less drama. Not with this fan base.

But let's face it, drama raising it's head can only happen with a lack of discipline. And if Martinez was part of the problem, his replacements resume sounds even better.

Honestly, Shoop wasn't a bad hire and did better than what most think.

His second half adjustments in the first half of the season were great. The last half we were so decimated with injuries that we were exposed. CBs to me, were the only area of concern.

The drama part could be both coaches and players.

Just because Hurd played on the O doesn't mean his drama didn't carry over to our D with his friends on the D side of the ball.

Healthy players will definately help.

We all know that starters get the huge majority of practice reps in order to get them the most game ready.

I hope that 1 thing our coaches learned from last season is to get backups more practice reps so that if injuries do happen our backups are much better prepared to come in and play much better.

VFL...GBO!!!

It's possible Shoops defenses fed of the high moral, high positive energy of James Franklin.

Penn State became better on defense.

I saw the 2nd half adjustments in the 1st half of the season.

I dont know really know what to think of Shoop. So many times we should have run 4-3.

“Sometimes its difficult when you come into a staff, and you’re the only new guy on the staff on one side of the ball, and you’re trying to fit into a culture,” Shoop said. “Rather than put your stamp on things, you’re trying to fit in

Honestly never seen a staff more obsessed with fitting in together and maintaining a culture.

You don't have to have that warm, cozy family feel with every employee you work with, it's football. It's OK to be competitive. I don't think Cutcliffe and Chavis ever had the warm and fuzzies for each other as an example.

If I hired a guy to do a job, I would expect him to put a stamp on it, not do the same damned thing that I just fired the last guy for.

I would expect Coach Jones only tweak to the defense is another slogan or to bring back the "Fist Up Defense" mantra.

"Hand strength, we need more hand strength."

Didn't read the link, but hope tackling was somewhere high on the list.

Not much of that going on last season.

This isn't a Shoop issue. This, once again, is a BUTCH issue. He has his fingers in all aspects of our team and it shows. If Butch wants to win here, he'll let Shoop run the show on D. Butch doesn't have the X and O power to micromanage both sides of the ball. Butch needs to recruit and talk to the media, and currently he is even screwing those two items up.

Did better than most think? Most think he set records, and not the good kind.

He needs to start with his motto from last year "Nobody will run on the Orange Swarm". Technically, he was right, no one did, err'body did. Even teams at the beginning of the season. Run D is most important in the SEC. Kongbo and McK needs to step up and Tuttle needs to get healthy. Penn St D got better this year without Shoop, Tn D got worse this year with Shoop. That is facts but definitely not what everybody expected, myself included. Everyone expected sluggish offense and a very good D, opposite happened. The O was rolling.

I took the "less drama" statement as being about the defense showing up after the second half when we haved spotted the other team 3 scores. Drama from a style of play and not between coaches. There might have been some drama between coaches but with the context of the article I lean toward it being about the defenses performance.

“We talk about style of play, that’s what we want to do,” Shoop said. “If I were to summarize it, three things we need to improve: Less drama, less injuries, and less explosive plays."

Assuming our big dogs come off of injury ok, I think we will be fine on Defense. Sure we lost some studs in Barnett, Vereen, Sutton and those dismissals and injuries to JRM, DannyO, Shy, DK, KMac, etc.

But we bring back a lot of experience courtesy of those injuries and dismissals. We have great talent at the DE spots, LB and Safety/NB.

CB is the big concern. I think Coach Warren will get a lot more out of the existing CBs / New blood. Martin has a great physical stature for CB, he just needs to be coached up and make better decisions. Mosely, while small is fast and can lay a lick. Let's hope Martinez was the problem!

Good list, now for next year, is it up or down?

1. Down-don't lose the best DL top 10 NFL pick and not suffer, he himself changed games. 23 3stars (not every 3 star is a diamond)

2. Push-everybody thought Shoop was an upgrade, he wasn't the first year but biggest gain normally is 2nd year, jury still out on new secondary hire (can't be worse) and expect more changes in the next two weeks

3. UP-as was just mentioned, second year normally sees the biggest jump as most will know the system (if changes are made, Shooo needs to hire guys familiar with him/system)

Yours?

I think the drama was probably a cumulation of multiple factors such as players refusal to switch positions, coaches bumping heads with Shoop, Shoop wanting his defense ran his way, with his language, and not the assistant coaches way, and our defense coming out flat with no energy. I read this article, and following Shoop as I have and watching him coach before he came here, I get the vibe that Shoop laid it down to Butch and said it's my way or nothing. I'm thinking the message has been sent to everyone on the defensive side of the ball. I fully expect a new defense come Sept., and I suspect another coaching change or two before then as well.

We will know soon enough because Shoop loves to play big S in the box and run a 4-3 on most downs. Shoop has also had a lot of success developing hybrid guys like Taylor and Kong. Those guys should excel in this defense, along with big S like TKjr.

The keys in my post are essential to playing winning defense anywhere at any level . Much of the game is in the head, tenacity and the will to win.
