Barnes:Player Development

We sure are putting a lot of talk into a kid a being a true pg when that same kid wasn't even thought of that way in the services as a recruit

How do we know turner is a true pg?

He's not listed as a PG by 247? I think a lot is also coming from those who have seen him practice multiple times and rave about him?

Wasn't really the argument. Argument was, is Punter adequate as a PG, not how much better we'd be if he could play off the ball. Everyone agrees on that point.

That's like saying is Armani an adequate 4? Yes he is, but our team would be better if we had a Finney-Smith that could play the 4 and Armani either the 3 OT 6th man, no?

From the workout footage I've seen of him, and his ability to dish the ball, he's gonna be a player. If ulis Leaves this year (he's gonna, imo.) turner also imo, has a legit chance at the first all sec. Will he do it? That's to be seen, but it's possible.

You pretty much answered yourself when you gave
Bowers as an example.
Hell, Barnes thought Armani was a PG. One of the worst ball handlers and decision makers on the team.
True PG is a pretty much out dated term.
How many have we faced this season if there is such a thing?

Pg punter
SG Loften
SF Richardson
PF stokes
C chism

Would the pg position be the problem with that team?

Perhaps turner in place of punter according to some here?

What would expect from turner if he played right now??

TylerU type performer or Phillips type player the past few weeks

IMO much close to Phillips.

Phillips also isn't a PG, but no I definitely wouldn't say Ullis, maybe 1st year Bobby Maze? 8ppg 3apg probably would be around a 38-42% perimeter shooter type of guy?

Again, I haven't once said "true PG", that position has become borderline extent. The point is that he's a guy who CAN play PG, which your reference to Armani only strengthens that point. This team desperately lacks players who can play PG at a SEC level, I don't see how adding one couldn't possibly improve this team.

You have 3 guys, arguably 4 that can handle and pass the ball pretty well...when we start Punter/Baulkman/Schofield/Moore/Alexander that number is more along the lines of 1.

Btw, who's Loften?

No one's arguing it wouldn't.

JP Prince was a pretty good player who at times played PG. Does that mean we were set at the point guard position if we just rolled him out there every night?

Pretty close to tylerU numbers as a freshmen there

Thought you were referring to present day Ullis, apologies. Something to consider with Ullis, as everyone who watches CBB will tell you he's way more than numbers. His defense is arguably the countries best, and he is the undisputed leader, those things don't show up in PPG.

Lol

I haven't said that
Hell adding any living breathing body of any position to this team would help

Pg wouldn't be the first position of need IMO

3,4,5s would all be more important IMO

At that point you're getting into quality of each, would I wanna add another Kasongo or would I take a Cat Barber, obviously Barber.

The thing is, we have someone on the roster, that's what this all started about. It wasn't some fantasy about what player can you add, it simply was we have this guy on the roster that if he was eligible would improve this team quite a bit.

Punter is a scorer, pure and simple. His role as a scorer would be significantly diminished in that hypothetical lineup, and given that his ball-handling and distributing aren't exactly the strong parts of his game, I would argue that yes, PG would be the weakness of that team.

In his current role as de-facto PG, his role of primary scorer is still paramount, so it appears that he is doing a fabulous job at the position when in reality, he could probably execute that exact role just as well, or better even, if he were playing the natural role of a scoring 2G assuming we had an adequate player to perform the role of PG. The fact remains though, we don't have a player that Barnes trusts to play PG for extended minutes other than Punter, so a PG he remains, even if in name only.

I respect what you guys are saying for sure

Here's another interesting discussion I think

Would we be better if we added tylerU or Hield from OU?

Imo I take the kid at OU but it's an interesting discussion and one that shows my stance

Chris

Why can't a pg be a scorer?

A PG can be a scorer, but Punter could be more effective as a scorer, especially late in games where he is playing 35+ minutes, if he wasn't tasked with the additional responsibilities of the PG position (bringing the ball up, facilitating the offense, etc) when he isn't naturally a PG in the first place.

JMO...agree to disagree.

IMO, you take Ulis because Punter already does the things that Hield can do while we currently have no one who can do what Ulis does. Ulis makes everyone around him better and provides elite defense. Most importantly, he allows Punter to be solely a scorer.
