Barnes:Player Development

This just in: Bruin has a bone to pick with Barnes.

Funny thing is I have been singing Barnes praises all year about individual development.

The longer the season goes the more it looks like that praise was wishful thinking.

Not much individual development going on from my view at this point

Not a bit with the big guys from day one. Best I can tell, they've not even been taught how or where to post up.

The NCAA robbed us of our only true PG, and our only legitimate post players are hopelessly green and in need of a redshirt. Still, with a little determination Barnes could've won 15 or 16 games by now even with a hodgepodge of 2 guards and 3 guards... all it takes is some fire in the belly.

Wow. 15-3 or 16-2 with 6'4" and 6'5" post players?

Didn't think I needed blue font with dripping sarcasm. Made the edit..

It's needed. Only a couple of loses were decisive. Even last night there was a makable shot missed with about 5:30 remaining that would have cut the lead to 15. They came almost all the way back at Gonzaga. Georgia, GA Tech, Auburn, and TX A&M were winnable. I didn't watch Nebraska, but that one and last night were the worst efforts. Butler & GW weren't beat downs.

Sarcasm as in "we'd have more wins if Barnes had fire in his belly." Guy has 620 wins and taken 22 teams to the dance yet people won't be satisfied until wears an orange tutu and paints a T on his chest.

Should've went with Wade. Give him a few years since he is a young guy and not really a big name.

Barnes appears to be killing time until retirement. You want better results from a coach with his reputation. Uninspired is what I'd call Barnes and this Vols team. And his recruiting is disappointing for the most part.

Have you looked at VCU schedule - Team that has talent has not beaten a P5 school this year and all their wins are vs Lesser opponents so for me that is hard to call a good hire by VCU at this point.

Also I wouldn't say recruiting has been disappointing, Barnes had 6 months to start recruiting these kids when other schools have been on them for 2 years. I think you will see and should expect bigger names in the 2017 & 2018 classes but expecting something big in 2016 based on his time restrictions is a little unjustified. Also don't expect a high ranked class next year because we only have 2 scholarships thanks to Martin and Donnie. Still should get quality guys and hopefully post players because Martin and Donnie could never recruit good post players and that is why we are starting 5 guards every night and average team height of 6'4.

My point is this mess that was created by Martin and Donnie is not going to be fixed this season or maybe even next and already making claims about development when you have the least talented team maybe in Tennessee history is a stretch IMO.

And watch Wade turn the Vols down in a few years, and I wouldn't blame him.

Nor would I!

Hart was a lazy a&& for not taking a week to interview some "up and coming coaching talent" who would have built a long term program, that we all could really be proud of.

Those who think that my focus was on the retention of Donnie Tyndall and did not recognize that my real disgust was the hiring of a washed up RB, were just as lazy as Hart.

Hopefully, Barnes and Hart will be gone soon, but not soon enough.

I disagree. Get Barnes under contract ASAP. Doesn't mean he couldn't have given a call to Shaka or some of the other 4 or 5 established stars, but when you are able to ink a future Hall of Fame coach you don't dick around with the zit faced newbies with potential. You can grab one of those at any time. TN needed a proven veteran to keep this ship from sinking. I'd say things are pretty much going according to the plan right now. Hart has a list of who to go after in a couple of years. He can take his time evaluating dozens long term candidates.

I feel confident that everybody, including Barnes, expects that TN will have a different head coach in 5 or 6 years UNLESS Barnes is getting to Elite Eights or beyond and WANTS to keep on coaching as he approaches 70 years old. I bet that that is the plan and Barnes is in the loop.

Think about it. What young, unproven coach with potential isn't going to have a much better chance of having great success following a Hall of Fame coach that is setting the table for his successor versus coming into a dumpster fire that has to be extinguished before moving forward? A lot of guys are good at one or the other, but not necessarily both (rebuilding a steaming pile if garbage or winning with talent).

Hate to break it to you, champ, but that's not what we were thinking about you.

When you look at Hart's effort to replace Cuonzo, he was only able to find ONE person willing to take a lame duck program. Tyndall lost 4 insignificant recruits that Martin had signed and 2 insignificant returnees that were not willing to stay and do their best to help rebuild the program. He then did his best to bring in what was available, after Spring recruiting was better than 95% completed. Still, he was able to finish with a record that was at least .500, including two wins over Vanderbilt, and wins over NCAA invitees LSU, Arkansas, and Butler.

As soon as he was fired, the fired Barnes was hired in 2 days to replace him. He was able to bring in Kasongo and Alexander and we know how ineffective they have been. Thank goodness, Tyndall had signed Admiral and Shembari, who both honored their letters of intent, and each have shown that they have a positive upside.

Now, Barnes has signed a class of 3* players to replace those who will have their eligibilities come to an end this year. This is a class that has been ranked in the lower tier of the SEC classes for 16-17. Will Wade took D'Riante Jenkins away from Barnes, even though VCU is not in a Power 5 conference and does not have the fan base or facilities that Barnes has to recruit to. This being January 2016, how does anyone compare Wade to Barnes? As far as I'm concerned, not favorably. And when you look at the possibility of the longevity of the 2, I do not see how any Vol bb fan could feel positive about our future with Rick as our coach, when we could have vied for Will.

This class is not full of 3 stars but ok. Jalen Johnson, Kwe Parker, and Grant Williams are all 4 stars per ESPN. Everyone in this class is ranked ahead of what Admiral and Shembari were ranked and you are praising Big Donnie for being some lights out recruiter smh. Dude I swear you'd lick Tyndall's jock strap if he'd let you.
