Austin Rogers

Why would you entertain this crap? I don't understand why you guys are calling them names or even arguing about name calling. We're grown and I thought we were talking about a players ability.

I don't know if you can say much about a player's ability. I don't think I've read a post of yours that didn't include "fast", "playmaker", "Denarius Moore", "Austin Rogers", or "stretch the field". Just saying. It seems like your infatuation with speed has hindered you from being able to correctly analyze anything to do with football. Maybe it's just me.:ermm:

Rogers did fine under Cutcliffe. Rogers is a possession WR. The "keep the chains moving" guy. He'll see the field plenty, except the only time you'll see him streaking downfield is because there's either an underneath route being thrown or it's a run play.

How can u say that? I want to see what happens when Moore is given a bigger role. Rogers has maxed out his ability and it's not up to the standards of former vols so let's give some other guys a shot to bring the bar back up.

really u cant honestly say that moore is better than rogers because he has yet to prove anything thats not to say that moore wont or wont end up better because we dont know yet but rogers has proven that he can play and be valuable

Let's keep get one thing straight he's not valuable. It wouldn't hurt us to lose him. He's like the Antonio Gaines of the offense.

Why shouldn't receivers without size be fast? I have a big problem with guys that are 5'10 to 6'0 that run 4.5s. Everybody can get mad but if almost every big receiver can do what our little guys do then we need to get rid of them. And my post was making another point in the first place.

Um, are you sure you aren't basing this off of the color of his skin?

well first i was thinking of the best slot receivers and then some receivers that just kind of faded away. but fine. he can be our david patten, looking at the saints, or maybe eventually a lance moore type. but that seems like pretty much as far as his upside goes.

They want to make it a race thing whenever you compare this dude to another white dude. He doesn't play like any black player out there period and they want us just to compare him to a Steve Smith or someone. Guys like Joe Jurevicus= Keyshawn Johnson. Austin Rogers isn't even as good as Welker or Gonzalez were in college. He should really be at Miss. St. or a WAC school. He's not a Tennessee quality receiver. Players being put on the field that have a skill set like Rogers is the reason Florida and Bama have been dismantling us the past two years. If you guys want him even in the rotation your standard for Tennessee football has gone down as far as our talent level at WR.

EXACTLY :peace2:

I don't have a problem with him in the rotation, I just think he should be after about 3 others. And if we have any mature enough freshmen to play right away (which is not always the case, of course), he could be behind them too. But so far i would put him ahead of Green--though I don't know much about him--and we're not sure if we will have Brown.

I don't think we can compare Rogers, for instance, to the trio we had just recently (Meachem, Swain, Smith). My avatar made me think of that. He just isn't as skilled and doesn't scare anyone on defense.

That's my point. We started to settle for athletes of Rogers caliber instead of what we need. Lucas Taylor and Josh Briscoe can be lumped into that mix also. No one can say we couldn't attract those players because high school guys could see Meachem and Swain making plays and putting up numbers. Fulmer had no excuse and that's why he's gone.

Interesting you should mention Swain since his combine 40 times were 4.60 and 4.68. Also, that Swain's best season ('06) had him catch 7 fewer passes than AR's best, though he did garner 64 more yards.

So, AR's best season (as a SO)
56-624-4

JS's best season (as a Sr)
49-688-6

With those 40 times it's a very real possibility AR is faster than Swain was as well. I'm having difficulty seeing how much that comparison helps your case.

Playmaking ability. Swain kept drives alive, made the clutch catches.

Perception-----------------Reality

If it makes you feel better I'll reiterate that my (caveat on Paige's mental aspects) preferred starting 3 would be Moore/Paige/Jones.

To be honest, researching this issue has done nothing but elevate my view of AR somewhat. When compared to other #2/#3 receivers in this league he showed in '07 his production is right there with anybody. I'm not asking you to like it, I'm telling you it's a demonstrable fact. If he can work on the drops a bit under the new staff it's entirely possible he'll see no small amount of playing time.

I'm amazed at how many people get upset by the word "turd."

Stating your opinion is one thing....but calling a kid a "turd" is another thing....it is uncalled for & only causes you to lose any credability you may have had.

And I'll repeat what I said earlier....you are a tool & a d-bag.

I'm saying he's not a playmaker. I'm saying he shouldn't be a WR on this team. I'm saying we shouldn't have to "settle" for a WR of, at best, mediocre talent. We all know the #'s, but let me ask you this, do you really want this kid on teh field on a 4th quarter drive to win the game? Do you think he can make "the big play" or give this offense a boost? I'm not taking anything away from what he HAS accomplished, which is middle of the road, but these types of players is what will get you a 5-7 season.

I find it funny that people are calling Austin Rogers a possession receiver but he has a catching problem (i.e. he can't possess the ball because of the butterfingers) I hope Kiffin doesn't let him on the field

IMO the kid is a TURD ON THE FIELD. He may be the nicest guy in the world, but on Saturday, I do not like seeing him on the field. I'm not saying anyone else on here has to call him a turd, or believe he is a turd, but in my opinion he is a turd.

Yet you listed several other guys who have shown no more talent than Rogers has. He is faster than Taylor, Briscoe, or Hancock yet you aren't saying they shouldn't have been on the team. You haven't given one good, objective reason why you don't think he should be a WR for the Vols.

At 6'2" 190+ he's got good enough size. As mentioned before, he runs decently well. He's shown good production. He's probably the toughest WR the Vols have or have had for several years. He blocks well. His one problem is that he's dropped some balls... guess what, most of the other guys mentioned in this discussion who happen to be primarily black have dropped balls too.

And what did Paige and the others you favor do? Yes. Give me the guy who catches 56 balls in a season, goes over the middle, runs the right routes, makes the tough block, and apparently has the confidence of his team mates over the other guys you've mentioned every day... err, 4th qtr... of the year.

Are there better talents? Of course. I'm not suggesting by any stretch that I don't want to see every position group upgraded... but you've abitrarily picked AR out as the worst of the bunch. The facts just don't back you up.

I was hoping you'd have let this go by now.

The real bottom line that completely exposes that you must have a bias for some other reason is his 2007 season. You can't do what he did and not be an SEC worthy WR... you just can't.

Somebody didn't watch the 07 Kentucky game.

I DON'T THINK HE IS GOOD ENOUGHT TO PLAY FOR TENNESSEE. You can throw you stats around, but when it is on the line, I DO NOT WANT HIM IN THE GAME. He is not a playmaker, he does not give the offense a boost. I'll say it again, it's players like AR that cause us to have a 5-7 season. We've settled for too long.

P.S. I like how having a strong opinion will get people upset on here. I've been reading posts for a while now, and it seems that the popular thing to do is bash posters who don't have over 1 or 2 thousand posts. Just thought it was funny.

Re-read post. He did not win the game for us in the 4th quarter. Yes, I watched that game.

Let me ask everyone who reads this a question, and all you have to do is respond with a "yes" or "no."

-Should Austin Rodgers be a starting WR for the University of Tennessee this season?
