I have done the hair in the past, along with other deterrents with mixed results. I've got a 2.5' chicken wire thing that I've thrown up in the past, which stops some of the rabbits but not the deer. I live in a very developed area of Nashville where I am pretty certain of two things: (1) The state will not give me a depredation permit; and (2) Some of the neighbors would definitely see and then turn me in for hunting out of season.Human hair mulch... fencing... motion activated lights... motion activated sound effects... At last resort, deadfalls & snares (entrees).
The post about the pit bulls is pretty on. I had a dalmatian and a hound dog up until a few years ago and those pets probably did more than anything to keep the animals away.
At any rate, the better half says no new dogs and no new fences until we decide if we're going to stick around much longer. I think she wants to stay but land values are insane in Nashville right now so it's a struggle.
