Ask Behr anything about anything not related to food

Hey @Souce, have you seen the thread in the RF today about what the other fanbase’s are saying, specifically Florida? It’s got Lawrence, 99 and jaws in there. Lol.

salmon is a bottom feeder fish -- the aftertaste is horrible
No, salmon is NOT a bottom feeder. Its strong taste is due to the fact that it’s a fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring, trout, tuna, sardines, etc.) I only took on salmon a few years ago, already in my sixties, because of the taste. But for me, when it’s grilled with something like soy sauce and brown sugar, etc., I like it. Straight-ahead salmon; I can’t deal with it. I didn’t grow up with it, and I had to work at it to take it on. I did so because Hubs loves it, and because it’s an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.

I had to google this, but oddly cod and haddock ARE among bottom feeding fish, and they are probably the mildest tasting fish around.

go to a restaurant what would you rather pay 30 bucks for -- salmon or porterhouse steak ?
I’d go with the porterhouse, but that’s because we have salmon once weekly, and we’ve never bought and grilled porterhouse steaks.

I like to go to restaurants for food that I’m too lazy or intimidated to take on at home!

I get that its healthy and all, but cant tolerate the aftertaste for several hours after eating it even when I used blackening in a cast iron skillet it was still there
It can definitely be an acquired taste.

Do you remember how you flavored it (rub, marinade, etc.)? A good flavoring can really dial back the strong fishy taste. Straight-ahead salmon, even with lemon, is just too much for me.

As for aftertaste, I take a fish oil/omega-3 capsule except on salmon day. The first burp usually happens about 45 minutes later. Our cat is deeply intrigued and gives several serious, deep sniffs. (The burps end a half hour or so later.)

If you truly can’t get your arms around salmon, and if you have any risk factors for heart disease like hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high blood fats), obesity, etc., look for a good fish oil/omega-3 supplement in the vitamin aisle. I have a couple of supplement bottles in my drawer heading for expiration dates that I wasted money on and never take, but I’m pretty faithful with the multi-vitamin and the fish oil.

Look for one that is high in EPA and DHA like this one (unfortunately an Earth Fare brand, so going down the drain, I guess.) There are plenty of crap supplements that have a lower amount of these two.

If nothing else, your pets will be intrigued, lol.

Hardly ever get steak at a restaurant. My steaks at home are awesome. Dont eat alot of beef anyways
I only get steak at Texas Roadhouse - cook at home mostly -- my SIL always wastes money on salmon or shrimp there and the portion is small for the price of it imo

Yep, for the cost, I’d rather do seafood at home, assuming you can buy something halfway decent.
