'25 App State Transfer QB Joey Aguilar (Tennessee)

Although I have been sitting in the same seats at Neyland for 40ish years I reside in Boone and have seen Joey Aguilar play more than almost anyone here. I can't make all the games in Knoxville, so the ones I miss are usually spent at ASU. I've seen JA play live at least 6 or 8 games, more on TV later that were recorded.

I will be the first to admit that I'm not a really brainy guy as far as the X's and O's go, but I have what I would call a loose grasp on both teams abilities and talents.

That being said, We are gonna be OK,,,,really. Not a Natty trophy in the case OK, but a solid 9 or 10 win season OK.

In case you've forgotten, 9 or 10 wins is good in the SEC.

In retrospect my main observations were Joey was really good at looking past the Ist and 2nd option receivers and using his feet to create time for plays to develope.

He did get picked off 12 or 14 times last year, most in the FBS, so there's that.

There's a lot more to unpack, Sean Clark was the head coach, he was fired last year. Jerry Moore, Scott Satterfield,, and Eli Drinkwitz had things booming at App State for decades. Sean Clark dropped the ball and part of that bounce involved Joey not being "coached up" as well as he could have been.

The talent and will are there, I saw it. Coach Heupel will do his part as usual.

It's gonna be OK.

Honestly he was average in that game as well. Led us to a 35-0 win, but only threw for 150.
His rushing stats were good and the final score made it look dominant, but the James Pearce pick six and the fumble recovery at the 2 yard line made that score a lot more lopsided than it really was.
But as a Freshman it was a decent start.

No major mistakes and he completed around 60% of his passes. I thought it was decent for a true freshman. But he never got better from that game until the next season.

But I agree with what you said. He didn't set the world on fire.

That jibes with my film study! Dudes a good QB headed to a QB friendly offense!

Seems like the “negas” have been right more than wrong about coaches and certain players in the last 15 yrs or so.
That's the thing...they are nega about absolutely everything. It's pure insanity. Yeah Nico missed layups, but we still saw him reign it in and play better as the games went on and he got better as the season went on. Was a decent redshirt freshman season. Just like Joe was decent in 2023. The negas aren't rational. The first Joey Aguilar mistake "he just doesn't have it"

Your opinion is fair without any context. To me, when viewing the entire Nico picture of being the top ranked QB recruit, paid $2 million to red shirt and learn, then paid another $2 million+ for last season then it’s hard to view his production last year in a positive light. Pre- NIL then maybe last season Nico could have been viewed as “decent”. The massive checks changed everything. To whom much is given, much is expected. JMO, TIFWIW

Tyler Bray may have thrown the best deep ball we've had in over 20 years. Great touch and quality receivers. Our defensive was nauseating.
That deep ball kept us in so many games that weren’t going well for us defensively smh. 2012 should have been an SEC East champion season at a minimum if the defense was even average.

Really is funny to look back on how in denial we all were at the time.

Some of the texts to my friend about how “Nico played pretty bad tonight, but……” are just…… man. I look like a deranged cultist in some of them lmao
I wasn't going to say that. But by the end of Spring practice, I was hoping Merk would get the nod as starter.

You would look at the defensive alignment pre-snap and know we were about to get cooked on the play. Then when the ball was snapped guys had no clue what to do. It was brutal

It was a blessing in disguise though cause it got Dooley out of here quicker. If he kept Wilcox or got a similar DC he might have gotten an extra year or two.
