Any word from practice on QB reps

See? I actually find that unfair but understandable criticism. Maurer had the team inside the red zone several times throughout his 4 starts. Vs UGA he never threw a pick in the red zone. Vs MSU he threw 2. Vs Alabama none. Vs UK none. So he’s got this bad rap in the red zone from one game? I feel like he was testing his limits and would’ve cleaned that up if he hadn’t had that nasty spill. I think that game gets out of hand by the third quarter if Maurer stays in.
No ints doesn’t mean he wasn’t making youthful bad decisions on throws in the red zone... he still made them but I’d expect that from him at that point. I can live with that, I can’t stomach a 5th year making freshman mistakes.

No, but what would that have to do with my response? I was only saying that he had one concussion that got worse after taking another hit to the head before he healed.

Relax...just joking with you because you’re so defensive. BTW the news outlets are still reporting in 2020 that he had multiple concussions last year so maybe they need to be corrected.
I’d love to be wrong about Maurer - and maybe it was just his reckless play as a freshman that colors my opinion - and him come in a deliver us from the nightmare of JG...

I get that. I’m saying he has that reputation now and I think it’s unwarranted with only one game of evidence. You said you didn’t trust him in the red zone so I’m trying to understand why you and many others don’t.

Lol. I am relaxed. I’m always relaxed (unless you’re Pulaski or KTown). If you could hear the tone in a text it’s “mono”. Trust me I’m not defensive. You haven’t unfairly attacked him.

But yes I know they say “two” but if you watch the post game pressers you’ll understand. Pruitt spoke and put a label on it before he’d even been evaluated. Twice.

Because he and the other qbs made more poor choices than good in the red zone. I trust the running backs more than any qb we got.

Fair enough. He’s got plenty of time to get better given the opportunity
Facts. I believe by his junior year he can make the correct decision if he’s ever given a chance to work through his wrong decisions without fear of being yanked. I remember Shrout escaped the pocket last year and had the ball in the wrong hand and ended a yard short going out of bounds. Pruitt yanks him instead of saying, “hey, I like the decision to pull it in and make a play, but you gotta have better awareness of what hand you have the ball in going out. We missed a 1st down but get it next time.” Instead he gets dog cussed and benched. I’m all for hard coaching but Jesus.

I think you're misunderstanding what I was saying. My point was as a player you have to have the attitude we can win every game no matter who we play. Nothign to do with how they play or how some players play, just mental attitude.

No, I get exactly what you're saying. And what I'm saying is that I know these kids aren't stupid. They know they are being led into a slaughter against Alabama and have zero chance to win because a certain someone's mistakes will ensure a 0% chance to win. They all are facing that reality. They may say to the public "we are ready and we will play to win" but in their hearts and minds they know that this isnt true and it will affect how they play because no matter how tough you are, you will have a hard time dealing with a hopeless situation. That's exactly what this is, a hopeless situation. there's probably never been a more sure loss on UTs schedule in 30 or 40 years.

Our QB situation is sort like hunting dogs. We have one that barks on the trail but want tree. We have another one that can't stay away from the Vet.
A third one thats gun shy. Then we got the pup that ain't learned how to get out of the dog box yet.
We need a meat dog!

He didn't get benched for that.

Would he have? I don't know, but JG was out at that point.

You could tell Shrout was nervous, afraid to make a mistake knowing he would get jerked from the game. He did and was jerked from the game. You can't tell me a D1 QB gets to this level and is so bad he can't make a decent throw or decision. But he's the backup. :) I'm not carrying water for Shrout but it's ridiculous to have such a short lease with a choke collar. Piss poor coaching not to have him ready to at least manage the game.

Bad play call too.

He had an incredibly short leash against UAB too, only for JG to play very slightly better.

Well my friend if every team had those same feelings then there would never be an upset in sports. All I'm saying players need to always have the belief that when they step on the field they have a chance to win. Don't defeat yourself before you even play.
Another thing that is mind boogling is how many fans have such a loser mentality. Predicting doom and gloom. I guess it is a protection mechanism and they are terrified of being wrong. Must be terrible beause they seem miserable and if we do win it must be hard to celebrate. The only way to go is with the WGWTFA mindset every game.

Gloom and Doom is due to the Vols record the last 2 decades, rightly so

If I had to put money on how the QBs are handled this weekend, this is how I'd predict it going down:
JG starts and plays mediocre - Bama starts to pull away in the second half - HB gets some snaps late in the 3rd and closes the game out but also looks mediocre. We then go into the bye week with a legit QB competition and hopefully the best man comes out on top

During the VQ hour on the Midday 180, Austin Price said JG will probably start but that he believes multiple QBs, specifically Harrison Bailey, will play.
