Also, following up on the claims made by another poster: both underage drinking and smoking weed are against the law. Why are we so generous to our players who drink while underage, but so harsh and critical of our players who smoke some pot?

If the problem is "breaking the law" then both are equally wrong. If the problem is "being an idiot "then both are wrong. If the problem is "doing something dangerous" then drinking is much worse. And yet we rail on our law-breaking delinquents who do one, but not so much the other.

Lol, actually I'm the guy everybody wanted to party with, designated driver always good to have around. Most my friends are drinkers, so I'm not trying to come off against people who like a to drink a bit. I just wanted to point out not everybody does this.

A big question to me is, where the hell were his teammates? Who let's a buddy put themselves in that kind of danger? I like most fit into the "there but for the grace of God go I" category when it comes to drinking in college, but my friends would never have let me put myself in that kind of danger.

The federal gov't bullied states into this RIDICULOUS LAW. I do not drink. I believe drunkeness is a sin. From a purely pragmatic perspective, there is no good that comes from excessive drinking.

BUT.... it is not MY right and therefore not GOVERNMENT'S right to tell other adults what moral decisions to make or that they cannot risk destroying their lives if they so choose.

For purposes of marriage, most contracts, the military draft, voting, working in an industrial environment, personal guardianship, etc, etc, etc.... 18 is the legal age of adulthood. If an 18 year old can be given control of a weapon and trusted to shoot the right people and not the wrong ones.... then they should be able to drink alcohol if they so choose.

I guess you've never had a few to many before. Or better yet I bet u think he's the first 18 yr old college kid to get drunk and do something dumb. Lighten up people he'll be ok he's 18 in his first year of college. And also how u gonna say he hasn't taken rehab seriously because of one incident u don't know what he's done man

One man's modus ponens is another man's modus tollens. Maybe we have reason to shift other dangerous activities to 21. It sure seems as if 18 year olds are not mature enough to be drinking.

This is increasingly true. Whereas there is no degree of acceptability for drunk driving under any circumstances, social media will divulge everything about everybody. I am sure these young athletes are continuously bombarded with precautionary information about the instantaneous publication of information via social media, much that is personal. Mix that with a young person's inability to rationalize what that really means in today's world, i.e., virtually anyone of any age can be a "celebrity" in the sense of being followed or having information circulated on youtube about them, mistakes are magnified and become information for commenting by people at large who have no knowledge of actual circumstances.

I suspect if today's social awareness about the details of person's lives was superimposed retroactively upon all of us that many persons on this board would be deemed as social outcasts. What we have learned from experience and maturity, we now expect young persons to already know.

The whole point of my comments are not to defend or downplay anything that has happened but to point out that society has changed but the way an 18 year old mind works hasn't changed to the same degree. Let's hope Andrew learns from his experience and moves on.
