Andrew Butcher underage drinking

*sigh* the law is not there to protect the drunk, it's there to protect the innocent family driving home from church, shopping, the amusement park , or wherever from getting killed by a drunk driver.
If that's your standard then the number of laws that need to be passed is astronomical. First would be to ban any mind altering substance (including the prescription drugs you've taken yourself)

The timing of his hearing sucks. Somebody needs to postpone this:

"Per Don Jacobs of the Knoxville News Sentinel, Butcher was ultimately released from jail on bond, and he is set to appear in court Sept. 10, which is five days after the Vols open the season against Bowling Green and two days prior to their clash with Oklahoma."

Dude, perhaps you should do a little more reading before replying. I've in a couple of posts on here that the drinking is not really the concern. It's a strong part of college culture....I did it, most college grads did it, hell, last year Jalen Hurd did it.

The issue here is that Andrew got drunk in public and evidently choose to go play in traffic....on a freaking interstate. Do you not see the difference?? I'd be willing to bet that both Butch and Andrew's parents sure as hell do.

My point was he had a few to many and didn't think it threw. Anybody who has been there knows what it's like to wake up saying why did I do that. I'm sure Andrew knows it was dumb

I'm glad no one was hurt but I kind of chuckled when I heard this story, guess I'm a bad person. Now if I was Butch right before the team is getting on the bus for Nashville, I would tell Mr. Butcher to start running staduim steps and when he ask when can I stop I'd say when we get back from Nashville.

Did anyone actually see him running around on the interstate? That type of language could also just mean him walking on the side of the interstate. When an adult says kids "running around" doesn't actually mean they were literally running around. And he who never did anything dumb when you were young please cast the first stone.

Since he enjoys running down I-40 so much, maybe he could point him toward Nashville this afternoon.

College kids drink? I'm shocked!
Witnesses say he was "either really mad about not getting that number" or "got real hype because someone asked him if he was 'ready for football'". Whether it was alcohol or the passion of the game that drove him to the Interstate that night, no one will know.

The Myth of the Butcher begins.

No, it would be to limit the amount I take with directions from my doctor , so I don't overdose on them. Maybe they should put laws in place that allow drinking, but only punishes you if you drink in ecess. Oh wait..............

And my point was that getting drunk on the strip and staggering back to your dorm.... Or getting busted by an RA for booze in your room is one thing and can be, to some extent, waved off. But getting so shiite-faced to the extent that you put your life, and potentially lives of others, in danger by running around in traffic on a major roadway is an altogether different situation.

But that doesn't protect everyone. To do that we need to make sure that no one could pop 5 percs and get behind the wheel. Only way to be sure is to ban them. Protect those children!

It's OK to lose an argument. You don't have to go to ludicrous extremes. Just accept you are wrong.

DUI laws on the books don't just apply to alcohol.

:thud:

No where has it said he was out running in the traffic on I-40. It's amazing how many on this forum are traveling the high road and are so quick to condemn the published transgressions of college aged kids?

Who's to say he wasn't riding with someone who had too much to drink and demanded they pull over and let him out? Its all speculation other than he was arrested for a minor offense.

Please - give the kid a break. This incident doesn't mean he's a bad apple. How about a little perspective?

It's not extreme at all. You said the laws are there to protect the innocent people. If you are truly interested in that them you need to restrict freedom for all and ban all substances like drugs and alcohol. Until you are ready to do that then your cute little crusade is irrelevant. You aren't protecting anyone

Except I never said I was opposed to drinking. I am opposed to people getting drunk and favor laws that punish people who do.

Yet they don't stop people from driving under the influence since it happens every day. Only way to truly make a dent is to ban all substances that could cause a dui. Think of the children!

"Tennessee Volunteers defensive end Andrew Butcher was arrested by Knoxville Police after he was found allegedly intoxicated as he ran around Interstate 40 at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a report from GoVolsXtra.

The report stated that Butcher had told the arresting officer that he had been drinking beer. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Butcher, 18, who listed White Avenue as his address, was arrested Sunday. He was charged with public intoxication, underage possession of alcohol and violating a controlled access roadway.

Records state an officer responding to a complaint of someone exhibiting drunken behavior on I-40 found Butcher “running around on 40 East near James White Parkway.”
