Andrew Butcher underage drinking

Had something like this happen to a buddy frosh year. He rode to a party w/a girl he just started dating. Turns out the party was at her ex's place. After a couple hours he's drunk and he sees her kissing the ex. He confronts her so the ex and his friends threaten him and chase him out. He didn't know where he was but he saw signs for 40 and knew that would get him back to campus. I eventually got a call from him and picked him up on the side of 40.

The federal gov't bullied states into this RIDICULOUS LAW. I do not drink. I believe drunkeness is a sin. From a purely pragmatic perspective, there is no good that comes from excessive drinking.

BUT.... it is not MY right and therefore not GOVERNMENT'S right to tell other adults what moral decisions to make or that they cannot risk destroying their lives if they so choose.

For purposes of marriage, most contracts, the military draft, voting, working in an industrial environment, personal guardianship, etc, etc, etc.... 18 is the legal age of adulthood. If an 18 year old can be given control of a weapon and trusted to shoot the right people and not the wrong ones.... then they should be able to drink alcohol if they so choose.
*sigh* the law is not there to protect the drunk, it's there to protect the innocent family driving home from church, shopping, the amusement park , or wherever from getting killed by a drunk driver.

Big difference between drunk on a sidewalk and drunk running around on the interstate.

No doubt.. I did some stupid sh!t when I was young, dumb and drunk but 'playing in traffic' is MEGA stoooopid...

A big question to me is, where the hell were his teammates? Who let's a buddy put themselves in that kind of danger? I like most fit into the "there but for the grace of God go I" category when it comes to drinking in college, but my friends would never have let me put myself in that kind of danger.

The team definitely needs a wingman policy.

What the kid did was dumb. He has to deal with KPD on the charges and the coaches are going to make his life a living hell for a while. What steps do those of you in the "this is a big deal" crowd feel need to be taken beyond that? I haven't seen anyone claim he shouldn't be punished. The kid is going to have to pay the piper. So what's the point of nashing your teeth over it?

Hopefully he gets so embarrassed he won't do that again. Nothing wrong with college kids drinking as long as you're confined to your house. Jmoimo

I could tell by his hi light film that he has a little crazy in him.I get the part that he is young, but I have been young and drunk before as well. I have never considered doing anything like that, despite how intoxicated I was. Hopefully he can reign in his crazy and take it out on opposing qbs next year. Wake up kid!

Famous last words: Hey yall, watch this!

I guess you've never had a few to many before. Or better yet I bet u think he's the first 18 yr old college kid to get drunk and do something dumb. Lighten up people he'll be ok he's 18 in his first year of college. And also how u gonna say he hasn't taken rehab seriously because of one incident u don't know what he's done man

Dude, perhaps you should do a little more reading before replying. I've in a couple of posts on here that the drinking is not really the concern. It's a strong part of college culture....I did it, most college grads did it, hell, last year Jalen Hurd did it.

The issue here is that Andrew got drunk in public and evidently choose to go play in traffic....on a freaking interstate. Do you not see the difference?? I'd be willing to bet that both Butch and Andrew's parents sure as hell do.

Oooh oooh...the what if game. I'm in:

WHAT IF...he was running on the interstate drunk and happened upon a car pulled over and the driver was in a diabetic coma and Butcher fed him the three sugar cookies in his pocket and saved his life.

AB in 20 years...I remember the time I was running on the interstate in Knoxville to help 2 young ladies who were pulled over with car troubles. I asked them if they needed help and they said, "hey, aren't you Andrew Butcher the UT football player?". Next thing I knew.....

Wouldn't you guys guess he was walking down the side of the interstate vs dodging oncoming cars out in traffic?

The next pressing issue we need to dissect is whether or not Butcher imbibed anally or the old fashioned, boring way.

Aaaand now the entire state of Tennessee knows about it. Congratulations Andrew and welcome to the craziness that is associated with being a college football player at a big time university.

Bet he'll think twice about where he gets drunk next time.

That would be my guess. I would guess the "running" part occurred when he saw cops.

It was a dumb decision either way on his part. And yes, there are lessons to be learned. But he doesn't deserved to be condemned either.

The transition to adulthood is tough on anyone but even more so on people in the spot light and on those with a lot of extra responsibility. I'm glad nobody was hurt. Jones will give him some form of punishment. Everybody can move forward.
