I just posted this on another site, but how good are they really? To pass the off season, I went back and watched a few of their games. For starters, they are predominantly a zone team. Most of Amerson's picks were not due to great 1 on 1 coverage but instead reading the QB in zone coverage. Here are some other things that jump out when watching a couple of their games and also looking at game logs:

10 of Amerson's 13 INTs came from vs. these teams

Liberty- 2 INTs
South Alabama- 1 INT
Central Michigan- 2 INTs
Virginia- 2 INTs (go look at how horrible Rocco was last year)
Boston College- 1 INT (go look at how horrible Rettig was last year)
Louisville- 2 (pathetic passing offense).

That's 10 of his INTs!

Vs. Cincy he had 1 INT but but Cincy's top 2 WRs combined for 11 catches for 166 yards.

Vs. Wake Forest, Givens (their best WR) had 111 yds on 6 catches. Their top 3 WRs combined for 300 yds and 2 TDs on 17 catches.

Vs. FSU, their top 3 WRs had 180 yds and 2 tds on just 15 catches.

Vs. Maryland he got burnt twice by Dorsey including one for a TD and the other for a 59 yd. gain. He ended up with 3 catches for 88 yds.

One of the best stat sites I have found:

cfbstats.com - College Football Statistics

Very easy to use.

State has a very good secondary. They are concerned about their front 7. They have never seen 3 WR's on the same team as good as UT's. They've obviously faced some very good WR's like Watkins. But UT has at least 3 on that level and we do not know what the Fr will bring.

Amerson is great but not State's only DB. Safety Earl Wolff (love his last name) is preseason all conference and the entire secondary is made up of Seniors and one Junior. That one Junior is Amerson.

Also, State led the nation in INTs and was second in turnovers forced.

It should be great fun to watch the 1s battle, Amerson (#1) vs. Hunter (#11).

I always get a chuckle when I see these types of game by game breakdowns and discounting of accomplishments. By this thought process Chris Johnson should be terrible because he played Conference USA opponents all the time.

Three weeks from tomorrow, Vol fans. :)

I believe Watkins didn't play vs. them.

Can you back up those stats and blowouts and many of the games mentioned vs. that great secondary?

I think the point is this. If you gave up 300 passing yards to Wake, you may be in for a LONG night against the three headed monster. Good info tvols75. Thanks for the post.

Everyone is acting like we have never faced a secondary with this potential. NC State will not even be in the top 5 of secondaries we will face this year. And Amerson may not be the best DB we will face. They have below average DL and LB's, that if we can coup the secondary up with a run game we will blast them from all angles. The Wolfpack Defense is fairly incomplete. You need more than 4 good players to field a good defense.
