Amateur Hour Continues

Can't do the benefits, just look at the history of being able to pass any law they want and not have to be held to same standards as the people they represent. Healthcare being one. Raises. Pensions. Especially pensions, sorry, they don't need that.

They can keep healthcare, no other benefits.

I'll give on the starkness, but, they should be coming from a life outside of DC where they earned their living and paychecks. Plan your retirement accordingly.

I can pay more than I offered, but, not $174,000/year. They can have more money, and to negate they do not have to pay taxes on years served.

Austerity isn't going to bring in the best people, and it's going to turn those in government to finding other ways to make money. I don't believe in the arguments that CEOs make for their absurd income and benefit packages, but you can't really believe that the people who run the country are less worthy of a decent income than a guy running Apple (for example). Whether $174K is reasonable or not, I don't know. No problem with a pension plan if it's just like a 401k type plan that everybody else might get. My big issue is that someone going into congress should leave with personal wealth comparable to when he/she entered. And just like a lot of lower level government employees, elected officials should have significant restrictions place on post service employment ... and certainly on speaking fees, book "sales"/advances, and corporate board and lobbying opportunities ... no more pay to play BS.

Is there a democracy today that has no parties?

Probably not. We don't even do sports without teams, religion without brands, etc; so it's pretty irrational to believe you can do politics without parties ... that's a shame, but that's life. Even high level individual sports like racing, golf, etc wind up as team sports when you get right down to it.

I'm curious. When you think about climate change and protecting the environment, do you all only think of like what may happen in 200 years?

That seems like the loudest argument I see in the public domains. Why is that?

When I think about protecting the environment i think about how some states allow people to **** on the streets, allow people to openly shoot up drugs and leave their needles lying around. How those cities have the highest taxes yet dont pick up and dispose of garbage so disease is now breaking out and affecting non street poopers.

I think about places building all these tent cities to accept illegal migrants so they have future voters, yet have no jobs or food for them so they do what anyone in their shoes would do and commit crime.

Seems like we openly destroy our environment on purpose 👌

Well, SF has always been a sh!thole as far as I'm concerned. Cold damp, expensive, and unfriendly. Other than the scenery (certainly not the women), I can't think of a single redeeming factor.

I agree.

But how come the horrible environments that are in our face everyday are not THE BIGGEST issue that we should be fixing?

And our country is allowing these sanctuaries to exist with no fight at all from anyone.

So wierd to me

It's California - the most enlightened state in the union. The rest of us are just simple mouth breathers who wouldn't understand.

Well I sure hope that isnt the real reason. But since our friendly liberals on this board won't answer the question....i guess ill just have to go with that. 🍻

OK, is there a republic anywhere that doesn't have a party system?

Sounds to me like an idea that sounds good as a theory but doesn't work in practice.

But why do we have it? Nowhere in the Constitution is it said we should have any political parties. Our first President warned us how divisive they could and would be. They exist because people made them. They continue to exist because sheep follow.

Because parties provide an organizing structure for politics.

How would anything get done if each representative operated as a "free agent"? Who would set the agenda?

The constituents would set the agenda. Representatives are supposed to represent the people that elect them, not serve a party. Loyalty to those you represent should always be paramount. Instead we get loyalty to the party line.

House Reps and Senators should be taking their direction from the State Governor and state citizens. Not the House and Senate majority/minority leader. Yeah I know... cool story bro.

People accept party politics simply because "that's the way it's always been". That's a sheep mentality. Things can change if enough people stop following the flock and make change. Unfortunately I don't see that happening. Not enough free thinkers in our society.
