Adams article

I would not agree that our fans are not passionate. I would agree that our fans are, for the most part, satisfied with four-loss seasons and playing in second-tier bowl games.
Should we revive all of the posts over the past few years from people who say they have been told to sit down and shut-up by season ticket holders inside Neyland? When things are going good, the crowd is okay but nothing like what you will see at the Swamp, Sanford or Bryant-Denny IMO. Of course some sections are louder than others, but overall the noise and enthusiasm level has dropped off. This is my observance over the past few years.

Could it be that about half of the people in the stadium are over 60 years old? Just a thought.

I've been trying to hold my thoughts on this issue, but it's very disappointing that as soon as Cut leaves, we're back in trouble off the field. The hammer needs to fall hard in Knoxville or these guys are going to ruin the program.

The worst incident so far was mixing drugs with a recruiting visit, but that was a first-time offense. I believe in second chances, but to heck with 5th chances. The number of offenses should never get that high. These are bad lessons for the players concerning how to deal with life and they are bad lessons for younger generations (kids) of Vols fans.

Its hard for parents to keep explaining why our players are getting into trouble. Geez, guys. Take some pride in yourselves and take your frustrations out in the weight room instead of the court room.

It's sickening when an NFL bound guy like Colquitt does this kind of thing to the team and to the program. His family must be extremely disappointed.

When will this all these off-field disciplinary problems end?

Ans: when someone shows the players it is totally unacceptable behavior irrespective of one's ability to contribute to the team.

If this keeps up, our transition from a football school to a basketball school may be dramatically accelerated. That could be in the university's best interest. Pearl is certainly doing so much better than CPF... and you all know, I've supported CPF fully. Perhaps Phil could ask Bruce for his advice. Something needs to change as soon as possible!

When you respect someone. You do what you can to not disrespect that person. These guys seem to have little respect for the head football coach at UTK. This isn't a new thing either. Just makes you wonder why something hasn't already been done about it:question:

I am not going to get into a critique of how Phil handles the discipling of individual players. I've said I would not do it in the past and I am not going to start now, although it is very tempting to pile-on given the curent climate.

One theory I have is that Tennessee may get more than its fair share disciplinary problems because it recruits a lot of kids who may be predisposed to certain behavior based on their histories. I don't think the staff does this because they want to, but I do think that they need a certain caliber of athlete to make the Pro-Style offense and Chavis's keep the ball in front of you defense work effectively against SEC competition. As we discuss frequently, there is generally not enough in-state talent to get the job done so the staff has to look elsewhere. As new coaches have elevated programs in areas where UTK could once count on some quality poaching the recruiting battles have become harder and the Vol staff may have dug deeper and taken more risks than they once did in order to find the diamonds in the rough. It seems that some coaches seem to be able to do more with less talent, which of course makes me wonder if top-down coaching changes might result in the implementation of new philosophies that would enable the Vols to increase their success on the field and be unshackled from the necessity of having to roll the dice on too many potential bad actors. I may be way off base, but this is just a theory as I said.

Didn't read the article. But what are most of these about? College aged kids drinking...omg, unheard of.

Well..it's more than that. You can't put a DUI in the same league with college age drinking. Also, the marijuana possession is in another league as well....

So, the kid's family can't do enough to keep him from getting a DUI but it is Fulmer's job to? Also, MJ possession is pretty minor in college.

I think that you have to seriously ask yourself how many alcohol-related offenses you can have, how many DUIs can one guy get before you no longer allow him to play on your team. You do control who plays for your team...and this sort of action by Fulmer seems to suggest that Fulmer will let you get away with it. As long as that continues, it begs the question as to how much these players fear getting in trouble...or the repercussions of misbehavior.

I haven't been on here calling for Fulmer's head. But, I have been saying that there is a problem. The behavior seems out of control..maybe it's just bad luck...maybe it isn't.

And, as for marijuana possession, I'm going to disagree. It is illegal...and while many people do it - it doesn't make it any more legal. When I was in college...as well as now...I don't buy into the argument that it should be legal, so it's OK to do it. It's not. I would have been scared to death to smoke pot on campus in college for fear of losing my scholarship or being kicked out. A little bit of that fear wouldn't be a bad thing for these players, IMO.

Although CPF cant be these kids momma and daddy,he still as head coach needs to take some accountability for these kids actions.Phil has lost touch with being able to right this ship. There is no doubt he's a good guy but he needs to grow a set and keep these boys in line, a little tough love so to speak.I wish him the best in life, but its really time for him to go.

I haven't seen any rapes, counterfeiting, or armed robberies this offseason. Perhaps some overzealous KPD officers combined with a few players needing to reign it in a little.

There was a little talk about attempted or potential rape..but that may have just been incorrect rumors. As for the others - I agree there are levels of wrong. But...I still think there is a problem.

I think this argument definitely has some merit... but we've gone after questionable kids in the past, Derrek Evans from Dallas in 1988, who ended up in prison rather than the college football field I believe. We had a bunch of discipline problems back in the early 90's too, characters like Nilo Silvan (from Louisiana), etc. We've been forced to go out of state for decades now, and the discipline problems flare up from time to time.

I definitely worry though, as the SEC continues to employ many outstanding recruiters (Meyer, Saban, etc.) that we are not going to land as many "can't miss" kids with outstanding skill and character, and may be forced to deal with kids lacking character, holding our breath that they won't get in trouble when not performing on the field.

People need to reign it in for sure. But I'll take 10 public intoxications to 1 armed robbery or counterfeiting.

I will defend Adams on one point. He has been incredibly consistent with his skepticism of the severity of punishment for offenders. He has previously noted that starters rarely receive the harsh treatment that non-starters/non-contributors receive.

I think that public intoxication is fairly different...I don't get too riled up about that unless it gets really bad. DUIs are another matter, on that I think we can both agree. So how many DUIs are worth one armed robbery? 5? We may get there...

You can't overlook the Cutcliffe factor here...

Cutcliffe's 2006-2007 tenure has now been solidly bookended by rampant discipline problems. It seems quite obvious that Fulmer needs an enforcer, and that we don't currently have one.

Nilo Silvan=Completely exonerated of any wrongdoing. His dismissal from the team is a great example of what happens when a spineless coach bends to pressure from airhead fans blathering about "discipline."

Not downplaying the NC ive been an avid vols fan my entire life even listening to every basketball game on the radio when we were too bad to get more than a few televised games. I merely am making the point that those vols would have won the title without Fulmer, and its now showing bright and shiny the truth about Phil and that he allows these kids to do what they want because hes lazy and probably guilty of misconduct himself.

Whether he actually did anything or not, it was another black eye to the program... particularly because of the nature of the charges that were brought. I know there were several other incidents with other players around that time... but can't remember them off the top of my head.

These things flare up from time to time, but we've had more over the past 3 years than we have over any other 3 year period to the best of my knowledge.

Only for people too dense to follow a story to its conclusion or so puritanical that a little sex talk makes them squeamish.

2006 Florida Gators. Fact: One big paw up in the air saved them against SC. That game was not won by Meyer, he just got lucky. Fact: A penalty on Tennessee that negated an interception return for a touchdown saved the Gators bacon. Even then Tennessee was driving late and was a missed block away from being in field goal range. Meyer didn't win that game with his gameday prowness, he got lucky.

2007 LSU Tigers. Fact: Tennessee had the Tigers on the ropes. LSU couldn't move the ball offensively. LSU needed many, many breaks in that game to win; and they got them. I don't think Miles coaching ability had anything to do with the 2007 SEC Championship game.

See the logic? Every National Title team has alot of breaks along the way that are not due to skilled coaching. I guess every National title winning team is just lucky. Right?

I agree which is exactly why i asked what has fulmer done since? he got his luck but couldnt keep the program up like Les Miles or recruit like Urban Meyer. We are 35th thats pathetic and when you count the ones that will kill, rape, steal, or do drugs, it will be lower.

you posts keep getting worse. Fat jokes and now you're saying our newest recruits will "kill, rape, steal, or do drugs"? :ermm:

Allegations of rape and sodomy of a minor gets most peoples attention in a negative fashion. If untrue, it was very unfortunate to Nilo. Either way, it wasn't desirable publicity.
