Acid reflux

I took Prilosec for years until I had to come off it because it interacts badly with my blood thinner. Now I take Pepcid twice a day and it works just fine.

That's what I go through. After an especially bad attack, it's like I've become asthmatic. It's from inhaling and coughing as you try to get the acid out of your throat.

Only way around it is to resist the urge to cough and immediately chew some Tums, then buffer the acid with something. Of all things, my wife buys TruMoo for my son and I've found that sipping that helps settle things down after an attack.

I have asthma anyway, and the reflux makes it worse. I never have asthma issues from exercise, but I'm wheezing when I wake up. Dr said it was reflux aspirating into my lungs. I slept in the recliner last night and didn't wake up wheezing.

I have taken several brands over the years Prevacid seems to work the best for me.

A quick homemade remedy for quick relief is mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with a cup of water, stir it good , turn it up and drink it all at once. You will burp like you have never burped before.

If it bothers you while laying in bed, try laying on your left side. If that helps you probably have a hiatal hernia.

I have been fighting acid reflux for over 40 years. It is something you have to learn how to treat personally. What works for one is not so good for another.

Good luck and May God Bless.

What Gramps said. I too am on Prevacid and it works for me. Actually I'm on the generic version on a script and it works. Things I like about script vs OTC is (a) the dose is higher than the OTC so it works better IMO and (b) it only cost $10 for a month's worth

I've used the baking soda also when something happens and I've missed a dose or its an exceptionally bad flare up. Use Gramps recipe for sure. If you put too much baking soda in you could blow your stomach up.

I used to have it really bad but it's not been nearly as bad the last 5-10 years as I went to a higher protein diet.

I still get bouts and honestly the best thing that has worked for me is Gaviscon Extra Strength in liquid form. A few chugs of that and I'm fine.

Mine started in my early 20's. I was diagnosed with H. Pylori. After that was treated, I was diagnosed with GERD. I take prescription Prilosec. If I miss one day, my stomach to my throat feels like it is on fire. I have actually belched up stomach acid before when not on my meds. Sometimes the acid reflux is caused by the opening to your stomach not shutting all the way.

I had this for about a year. It freakin' hurts!

I was lucky. I corrected mine with a minor change of diet, major reduction of alcohol consuption, not eating within 4 hours of bed time, never laying down after eating, and by reducing my self-imposed stress levels.

Haven't had an incident since...but now that I've said it.

You need to get treated for it. It can lead to stomach cancer. You will have to go on a regimen of 3 strong antibiotics for 3 months to hopefully get rid of it. You will always test positive for it though.

I used to do Prilosec every day, I switched to Nexium, just feel it works a little better.

Those medicines all say not to take them for more than 14 days consecutively. Does anyone know why?

I've gone a little past 14 days at this point....... 5 years past actually.......

Nexium can increase the risk of osteoporosis if taken for extended periods and can also cause hypomagnesemia.

I like Pepcid AC Complete the best. It's a chewable like a tums, but also a acid reducer. Works wonders for me

Apple cider vinegar

Underrated post. This works for some, myself included, and it's natural so there are no weird side effects. Look it up for the research.

Also, 100%aloe Vera juice. It tastes a bit weird, but it works as a natural acid reducer. Plus it has the added benefit of it soothing a burning esophagus. It isn't an immediate cure...takes a few days but I'm completely off my RX meds now

One plan is to take a PPI for flares or to get symptoms under control, then transition to an H2 blocker (like Zantac) for maintenance. Avoid exacerbating foods and eating right before bed.

I'm sure some have already mentioned by now.. so SIAP..

for me zegerid is the stuff. The OTC version is basically 1/2 the Rx stuff, so I take 2 pills right before going to bed to get me through the night.

Elevating head is good, although you could also elevate the top end of the whole mattress, too (think 2x4s under the springs or something).

Also.. big key is to sleep on your right side. Do a Google image search of the placement and shape of the stomach relative to the esophagus and you should be able to see why.

Aside from that, don't overeat at dinner and be mindful of what (and how much) you eat before bed.

The zegerid is good stuff (still pricey as OTC) but its not like nexium, et al., that make you pay attention to taking the pill a certain amount of time before eating. Just pop the zegerid before getting in bed, head a bit elevated, and sleep on your right side. Good to go.

Don't over-do it on the aloe Vera juice or you might end up with some stomach cramping or diarrhea. Otherwise, it's been shown to help with reflux. I think it can also lower your blood glucose, but I can't remember what I've read about it.

Left side*

Puts the esophageal sphincter above the stomach.
