That's what I go through. After an especially bad attack, it's like I've become asthmatic. It's from inhaling and coughing as you try to get the acid out of your throat.
Only way around it is to resist the urge to cough and immediately chew some Tums, then buffer the acid with something. Of all things, my wife buys TruMoo for my son and I've found that sipping that helps settle things down after an attack.
I have taken several brands over the years Prevacid seems to work the best for me.
A quick homemade remedy for quick relief is mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with a cup of water, stir it good , turn it up and drink it all at once. You will burp like you have never burped before.
If it bothers you while laying in bed, try laying on your left side. If that helps you probably have a hiatal hernia.
I have been fighting acid reflux for over 40 years. It is something you have to learn how to treat personally. What works for one is not so good for another.
Good luck and May God Bless.
Mine started in my early 20's. I was diagnosed with H. Pylori. After that was treated, I was diagnosed with GERD. I take prescription Prilosec. If I miss one day, my stomach to my throat feels like it is on fire. I have actually belched up stomach acid before when not on my meds. Sometimes the acid reflux is caused by the opening to your stomach not shutting all the way.
My mom gave me that before. It really does work immediately.I have taken several brands over the years Prevacid seems to work the best for me.

I used to do Prilosec every day, I switched to Nexium, just feel it works a little better.
Those medicines all say not to take them for more than 14 days consecutively. Does anyone know why?
I've gone a little past 14 days at this point....... 5 years past actually.......
Apple cider vinegar
Underrated post. This works for some, myself included, and it's natural so there are no weird side effects. Look it up for the research.
Also, 100%aloe Vera juice. It tastes a bit weird, but it works as a natural acid reducer. Plus it has the added benefit of it soothing a burning esophagus. It isn't an immediate cure...takes a few days but I'm completely off my RX meds now
I'm sure some have already mentioned by now.. so SIAP..
for me zegerid is the stuff. The OTC version is basically 1/2 the Rx stuff, so I take 2 pills right before going to bed to get me through the night.
Elevating head is good, although you could also elevate the top end of the whole mattress, too (think 2x4s under the springs or something).
Also.. big key is to sleep on your right side. Do a Google image search of the placement and shape of the stomach relative to the esophagus and you should be able to see why.
Aside from that, don't overeat at dinner and be mindful of what (and how much) you eat before bed.
The zegerid is good stuff (still pricey as OTC) but its not like nexium, et al., that make you pay attention to taking the pill a certain amount of time before eating. Just pop the zegerid before getting in bed, head a bit elevated, and sleep on your right side. Good to go.
