Acid reflux

I'm sure some have already mentioned by now.. so SIAP..

for me zegerid is the stuff. The OTC version is basically 1/2 the Rx stuff, so I take 2 pills right before going to bed to get me through the night.

Elevating head is good, although you could also elevate the top end of the whole mattress, too (think 2x4s under the springs or something).

Also.. big key is to sleep on your right side. Do a Google image search of the placement and shape of the stomach relative to the esophagus and you should be able to see why.

Aside from that, don't overeat at dinner and be mindful of what (and how much) you eat before bed.

The zegerid is good stuff (still pricey as OTC) but its not like nexium, et al., that make you pay attention to taking the pill a certain amount of time before eating. Just pop the zegerid before getting in bed, head a bit elevated, and sleep on your right side. Good to go.

I take the same dose. The cheapest route to buying Zegerid is Walmart. Buy the 42 capsule/3 bottle box for 22.84.

I thought I had acid reflux/heartburn, but my symptoms are different, no late night attacks, spicy foods do me no harm, other than making me burp like crazy.

The only time I have issues is while eating, especially steak, it gets caught in my esophagus and then comes the chest spasms, spitting up acid/saliva, horrible pain, had to have emergency surgery last week to have a piece removed. The doc prescribed Pantaprazole to help heal my esophagus.

I have Dysphagia, simialr symptoms but much more painful, due to panic, can't swallow, I went 28 hrs without water or food.

I need to reprogram myself to chew more before swallowing, or stop eating steak and similar foods.

Mis-diagnosed for years, until this most recent episode, they always said *acid-reflux*.

Have you been evaluated for an esophageal stricture, mass, or web, or for external compression (e.g. vascular ring)? Simple strictures can often be treated successfully with dilation. The others might require more invasive surgery.

I have not, but I've had several endoscopies and the results have always come out good, I have an appointment with a specialist next week so we shall see.

Good to hear. I hope you get some answers and your doc can relieve you of your suffering. A good friend of mine had a similar problem and it was very scary. He received treatment and is much better now. I'll pray that you are healed, as well.

I started getting a reflux problem when I was 19 and have been deal with it for the last 8 years. I have tried numerous remedies during that time. For me, taking generic prilosec everyday per doctors orders and keeping some generic pepcid complete around to chew during a flare up. It is important to see a gastroenterologist (Gi) doctor to make sure it is under control as it can lead to esophageal cancer.

I had reflux so bad a few nights ago that it inflamed my esophagus and got into my lungs. I was wheezing and coughing up mucus. It was a horrible experience. I still haven't completely gotten over it.

Happens to me from time to time, since my tonsillectomy I sleep better but still have acid reflux and will wake up coughing and burning in my chest and lungs , I imagine I inhaled some acid coming up or something, I don't eat anything past 7:30, cut down on acidic foods and eat a few tums a day and take 1 WalZan 150 every night before dinner, I'm losing weight slowly and eating healthier but when I had my tonsils my acid reflux was out of control.
Apple cider vinegar helps but makes you pee for minutes at a time and taste horrible, baking ng soda and water help but makes me sick to my stomach after burping like Homer Simpson for 20 minutes

Underrated post. This works for some, myself included, and it's natural so there are no weird side effects. Look it up for the research.

Also, 100%aloe Vera juice. It tastes a bit weird, but it works as a natural acid reducer. Plus it has the added benefit of it soothing a burning esophagus. It isn't an immediate cure...takes a few days but I'm completely off my RX meds now

I need to try that aloe juice , I've heard from multiple people that it works great and is cheaper than a lot of drugs. Soda Water is another remedy I've heard works well but I haven't tried it yet.

Zegerid has baking soda in it so you don't have to swallow or taste it.

Does anyone take more than 1 Prilosec or Nexium twice a day? I take 2 prilosecs per day, once every 12 hours. I also have Zantac at my disposal, in case I'm worried about Flair ups. I've done research and I assume there's not much of a difference between Nexium and Prilosec.

I use to take 2 Prevacid per day. The doctor has changed my prescription to 1 Protonix per day.

I have never taken Nexium. I have taken several brands over the years and for me Prevacid has worked the best.

Good luck

I took omeprazole every day. I had acid reflux almost every night. I stopped drinking caffeinated drinks and eating fast food everyday and it completely stopped. I still grab a sub or something from Arby's 1 or 2 times a week but I avoid Hardee's and McDonald's like the plague. I'm not joking when I say that crap will kill you.

For all the home remedies, it's amazing how much better it gets it you'll just not eat garbage, not eat late and not be fat.

The late eating is what I have trouble with. I get such an urge to eat late at night and I tell myself the whole time that if I do it I'll probably end up regretting it.

I can eat jalapeños again!

That is literally the only thing I changed. Caffeine and fast food. I strongly believe the fast food was the chief culprit. I stopped the caffeine after the fast food and could only tell a small difference but still a difference.

Same here. I get so hungry before bed and usually eat, then regret it.

I just started taking omeprazole before each meal and taking a zantac before bed. It has done wonders for me, since my episodes from Thanksgiving all the way through the holidays.

Like someone previously stated, eating late at night was always my biggest problem. I have figured out that I need to give myself at least 4-5 hours after my last meal, before going to bed.

I'd try the H2 blockers first(Famotidine(Pepcid), Ranitidine(Zantac) before going to the PPI drugs(proton pump inhibitors).
