5-7 and going Bowling

We aren't discussing the difference between "could" and "can't", we are discussing the difference between "could" and "won't."

But that's the chance. If you're wanting to argue that it's not some kind of mathematical impossibility, then whatever. Here in Nashville, it's a bright sunny day without a cloud in the sky. But I suppose that there is some infinitesimally small possibility that I could step out the front door of my building and get struck by lightning. But given that it won't happen, I'm not concerned with trying to figure out how it could.

Feel free to exhaust all possible scenarios in your head. I'll stick to reality.

At this point I'm not even sure how many teams would have to decline a bowl bid for it to land in our lap. Sounds like it would set a record.

I was in the UT Band for 10 years during some of our most exciting and prolific years. A running joke was to sing "I'll Be Home at Christmas" if we got behind in a game, even during 10 win years. But this year, no. We will be home through the holidays. It'd be cool to go to one at 5-7 though - piss a lot of other schools off.

I don't get why someone is trying so hard to make a very stupid point. You're essentially arguing that it's not a 0% chance, it's a .000000000000000000000000000001% chance.

This isn't a "could happen" vs. "can't happen", it's a "won't happen".

And no, I would not have said there is a 0% chance we could complete two Hail Mary passes in back to back seasons, because that's not the same thing at all.

I think you're short some zeros.

I prefer to call out a gump rather than a Vol fan for faulty thinking.

As it stands today, without considering any of the results of the next couple of weeks, UT would need to beat Vandy and would need 1 team to decline an invite. There are 70 teams currently eligible, and 4 more will become eligible next week. There are 4 5-win teams ahead of UT in APR. So, there are 78 spots available, and 78 teams ahead of UT in the pecking order.

To keep it at 1, UT needs all of the following to happen:

1. MTSU beats Old Dominion
2. Utah beats Colorado
3. Indiana beats Purdue
4. Cal beats UCLA
5. Georgia Southern (currently 1-9) AND Appalachian St beat ULL
6. Florida St beats Florida
7. Texas beats Texas Tech
8. SMU beats Tulane
9. Tulsa (currently 2-9) beats Temple
10. UTSA beats Louisiana Tech
11. Nevada (currently 2-9) beats UNLV
12. Idaho OR South Alabama beat New Mexico St
13. ULM loses to Arkansas St (Week 13), then beats Florida St (Week 14)

For each of these results that does not occur, UT would need another team to decline an invite.

Thanks for the info. I feel better knowing what to root for.

You missed the point badly.

You are the one who went down the insult path, then accused him of that very thing. So you you threw the punches (made insults), he punched back (with insults), and then you whined about him making insults.

All I did was stand up for VN because nobody else was.
If you’re comfortable listening to Alabama go on and on and on about precisely why we’re missing a bowl, then carry on.
It’s just as frustrating to see Tidal Surge make post after post in the Coaching Search Rumors thread.
I’m sure they’re both very concerned for our well being during these times.

As I said in other posts, they’re here and comfortable because of how pathetic our program has been while they sit on a pedastal.

UT has already said it will decline bowl invite...regardless of vandy game outcome. How many of these threads are there geeeez!

While you’re at it, I think you should research the past 100 years of Tennessee Football and then start a new a thread where you break down every corner of whether or not this is our worst season of all time.

For the record, I’ve never thought you’re a bad guy/girl, and you seem to be rather intelligent.
I’m just trying to help you understand how you look in this thread. You’re a Bama fan and you have enough time for posts like the above.
Then again, I seem to be the only one who cares. A new thread by you about how awful Tennessee is would probably be well received by most of VN.

Then perhaps it's your issue and not mine.

Evidently so.

After a new coach is hired, if you think it was a bad hire, I hope you bring forth pages of detailed analysis of why UT will be back in the same spot in 3-5 years.
The people will love it.

Eh, it's not really my thing. There are so many massive variables when it comes to a coaching hire that I'm mostly going to take a wait-and-see approach. I thought Jones was a decent hire at the time, so what do I know?

Yep. Pretty sure our APR is not good enough, which is what it takes for a 5-7 team to get to a bowl.

Our APR is fine. Our team sucks. And there has to be enough bowls to get down to us on the pecking order which there aren't thank God

Currie won’t sign off on extending the Hoke era. If we beat Vandy, we avoid that eighth loss. Why risk it in a bowl game to still end up with a losing record. Mullen is the first SEC HC to achieve the honor of winning a bowl game and still finishing with a below .500 team.
