3 weeks and no Aguilar reports.

It's different when you're playing from behind and making desperate throws. Hell, a good few of those ints were from the ball bouncing out of the WRs hands or getting swatted. Looks bad on paper, but it's not as bad as it seems either.
You don't think he's ever going to be playing from behind at some point here?

I'm not saying he's gonna suck, I hope he lights it up. The INTs are cause for concern imo. Just not convinced they will magically disappear.

I will be surprised if Aguilar is the starter
Yeah, 1.5 mill for a backup QB and he won’t start lol. The guy is a 5th year senior with solid experience in similar offenses to ours, so if he gets our offense down then he will be the starter. I don’t think there’s any question about it.

There isn't lol
I honestly don’t know why people are even arguing about it. There’s a REASON we brought him in and spent the money we did. Heup will have him ready to go before the first game. I like Merk and I like G-Mac but they aren’t ready, and 2 guys that are 1st year starters won’t work in the SEC. Aguilar is a wildcard but I think having a guy with that much experience and the ability that he has is what we need. It’s also why we spent 1.5 million to get him.

desperation. you really think UCLA was paying Joey 1.5 million also? they are paying Nico that much, while we paid Nico 2+ and were allegedly comfortable with 2.5 for Nico.

there is a reason Joey ended up at UCLA, and not any school with a pulse. There is a reason we made offers to other qbs first.

he may be better than our other options, but that doesn't mean the 1.5 million actually indicates what his performance "should" be.

NIL is too early in its history to set expectations based on pay. we haven't even had the freshman that came in with NIL graduate yet. desperation is a much better answer to why.

Didn’t say UCLA was paying him 1.5 mill. They were paying him 1 million. I’m also not saying that’s what his performance should be, but I’m saying that you’re not going to fork over that kind of money for a backup QB. Anybody who believes that is naive. Do I believe there will be a competition? Yes. Do I think it will be close? No. I think Aguilar will surprise a lot of people. Watching his film I love the QB we got. Last year he was on a horrible team, with horrible coaching, and he had to try and win games on his own at times. The year before that he was outstanding, and with more talent around him at Tennessee I believe that is the QB we will see.

I don't have a real problem with him or his game. I just find the money argument to be lazy AF.

The UCLA coach stated before the Nico situation came up that Joey had won the starting job in spring practice. If he was an interception machine as some on here believe he would not have won the starting job unless UCLA had no other QB's. Its the same old thing for some, coming out of a smaller school can he play SEC level.

We will find out soon. My bet he starts.

Gun slingers throw pics. Brett Favre threw a bunch, but most people remember him as a SB winning QB.

That said, with two 5* tackles, JA should have plenty of time to pick the D apart without trying to force throws into unrealistically tight windows....most of the time.

I predict the Vols are WAY better than the supposed experts are saying, and also the JA turns out to be one of the better SEC QBs this coming season.

Go Vols!

His NiL could reach 1.5 million by succeeding. It will be interesting camp battle. I will tell everyone this G Mac want start but staff love his upside throws beautiful deep ball. In CHRIST Alone

Kinda hard to throw interceptions against air. And it's UCLA, they won 5 games last season, I'm sure they were desperate for a QB.

CJH's scheme alone prevents INT's. All a QB has to do in this offense is read and let it rip.

If you look, UCLA DID have no other QBs. Aguilar transferred to UCLA and walked straight in to QB1 easily.

It's extremely odd to me that if Nico hadn't pulled his crap and someone came here comparing Joey Aguilar to Nico favorably, suggesting Joey was the better choice, etc there would have been horse laughs and the guy would've been told they were crazy.

Now ....... Joey is suddenly the better choice.

That orange Kool Aid hits some of y'all really hard.
The potential on Nico is very high. With that said, everything points to him being a locker room cancer.

Correct, at this point, but no one here would be saying that if he were still in our locker room and hadn't tried his extortion.

That's the thing, the ceiling with Nico is still high, his loss to UT's potential talent is real, but VN wants to somehow suggest Joey Aguilar, whom most of knew near zero about until recently, is a worthy replacement.

That's incredibly unlikely. Nico screwed up by pulling his crap and damaged himself and UT in the process. We are not better because he's gone.

NOBODY can know either way till we see what they both do at their new schools. I FEARED that Nico would never meet his INDICATED ceiling, and have no basis for what this guy can do. The team MAY rally behind whoever trots out there over a friendly family influenced star studded leader who was capable of turning his back on THEM. I am kinda getting a vibe that will allow all or most of the rooms on that side of the ball to excel. We are due.

I think we'll all rally around Joey, Merk, or G-Mac, even if one starts, washes out, and is replaced. I hope our starter gets a lot of latitude from fans and gets comfortable quickly with the offense.

The negative reaction to Paul Finebaum and Urban Meyer saying "This isn't good for UT" seems odd to me. It's not good. It's never good to lose your starting QB after Spring practice then pick up someone who wasn't on anyone's radar as a "we should go get him" replacement.

“He looks more explosive. He’s put on 5 pounds of muscle while trimming down. His connection with the receivers is really solid, and the QB room is all very supportive of one another. He’s a guy who can make all the throws, and he’s really glad to be here and show Vol Nation what makes him an elite prospect. He finally feels ‘at home’ in Knoxville.” -Some Source, probably

Does this help?

There’s a REASON we brought him in and spent the money we did.
Reason #1 is there were only two scholarship QBs on the team. That was NOT enough and would not be enough regardless of their experience. With the uncertainty of their inexperience the add was a no-brainer.

JA is QB1. IF Vols don't beat UGA or Bama, or we lose 3 games, QB2 takes over to get him ready for 2026.

I am beginning to think that Huepel’s success is exceptional to his ability to select a QB. He wanted the big arm from Michigan and successfully ended up with the brain and experience from VT. Lately he wanted the talent and inexperience from Nico and is going to end up with the physical talent and experience from Joey, which could very easily lead to a more successful program without all of the drama.

It is sort of like Alabama choosing the 5 star Ty Simpson and ending up with a bench warmer.
