247: Pruitt Contemplating Change at QB

He had some good offers. Most teams didn't really notice him till late in his Senior season and by that point, he was firmly committed here. Also worth noting that a lot of his G5 offers came from programs that have a track record of finding overlooked talent (App State, UCF, Troy), as well as one from Lane Kiffin at FAU.

Not that it matters. Kyle Trask had exactly 1 P5 offer (Florida) and Aarron Rodgers' best offer out of high school was Butte Community College. With QBs, plenty of 5-star busts and 2-star heroes.

Maurer was definitely underrated as a recruit, because the program he came from wasn't very good.
You do your homework before posting I see.

Crazy, he shows out a elite 11 before the season and they don't evaluate him again...recruitng services smh
That’s why he was guaranteed a major bump. But the next “update” wasn’t until February and he signed in January. My understanding is once you sign you lock in your rank within your class. He was supposed to jump from #18 to #5 overall.

Where is your evidence of this ?
I have been here a long time. I have been wrong at times about opinions. And am one of the few guys I know of that have admitted it and have kept the same screen name. I have been right about a number of opinions. I have been very careful not to overplay my hand by claiming things as "facts" that I was unsure of.

I have a very good source for this information plus the "public" indications from all three guys- what they say and don't say... and who says what and their body language. Chaney's history with QB's speaks for itself. JG is not the kind of QB he produces. So I had a suspicion and posted that as "I believe/think". But now I have confirmation from someone who would know. And then you had de1conley's input along the same lines.

You can believe me or not believe me. I am not at liberty to reveal my "source" for the most concrete proof. But I am as certain about this as I am that the 7 or 8 scrapes I found on my farm prove there are bucks coming through.

Is this just your opinion or do you have a source for this information? I do know you are correct on preparing the backups as it came from CJP’s mouth. Just curious
I posted a response to someone else above.

I suspected it for a long time just based on Chaney's past and the verbal and non-verbal responses of all three when asked about JG or the QB position. Pruitt throwing Chaney under the bus over the play call is a sign IMO. But now there are also people in a position to know things that are indicating the same thing.

And frankly, every HC that you would even want makes the final call on who his QB will be. I think Pruitt did that in January '19 when he pushed all in on JG's development. Unlike any other position, he named him the starter without even a hint of a competition.

Every "sign" I would need to suspect it is there. And while even reliable inside sources are not infallible... and can also have biases or perceptions that aren't correct.... I am convinced this is true.

How many threads we gonna start on this topic, y’all? Sheesh. Keep kicking that can down the road.

Pruitt needs to relax a bit. Any change at QB will bring 1st time starter nerves. Nerves are real, but JG has zero upside. this is about playing the guy who will settle in, begin to get comfortable, make a few mistakes, but will ultimately have much greater upside. Hell, I will take mistakes due to nerves over mistakes due to a 5th year starter who continually makes the same mistakes.
Cha-ching.

I heard the sideline reporter say that... yet when JG came off the field I saw multiple guys talking to him and Paxton Brooks in particular having a conversation with him.
Hope that's true because it is huge problem if there is a rift that has become personal. I don't want him to play. I also don't want him ostracized by all or part of the team.

Erick Dickerson on Weinke: “Show me the proof. Show me your history. What history do you have working with quarterbacks, developing quarterbacks? Then I can believe. And I just believe that they don’t have the right coaches in place for him, and that’s what it comes down to.” Look at Goff's stats with Weinke and without him. Its fair to criticize Weinke.
I don't know Weinke's history as well as I do Chaney's... but again I would like to see Weinke coach someone without JG's fatal flaws before writing him off completely.

I'm not sure what happened with the DL... but Pruitt pulled the trigger there. I don't think you can argue that the DL has performed worse than the O so far... pretty bad but not worse. I think if Weinke and Chaney were the ones telling Pruitt that JG should be the starter... one or both would have been gone too.

Yes. As far as that goes. But the boldness to even hint of a problem is a pretty big deal. You know that... and Pruitt is more strict than mosts.
I think Toto is just as strong minded...just nicer in presenting it. Pruitt’s experienced in dealing with different athletes (Mack Jones was no shy violet) so there will be no strong arming resulting from the pic.

Pruitt has forced Chaney and Weinke to work with and play JG. I do not believe either would have chosen JG if given an actual choice.

They have been limited as to how much they were able to prepare the others. They had to put time into JG hoping to make him successful.
Why would he do that?

I too think it's time to move on from JG. That said, some of you must just read the forums or social media and don't pay much attention to anything else. Maybe it is all on Pruitt, but I have seen interviews with Chaney and he said JG is his guy, Ive also seen Peyton give him the golden Manning seal of approval. No doubt JG must do really well in practice, and maybe lack of knowledge at this point, illness or injury, or maybe Shrout, Maurer or HB hasn't done enough to take the job away from him. Shrout had his shot and blew it by not being able to read the defense, not making the right adjustment, and subsequently throwing a pick. At this point, Shrout should have known better too, he's no rookie. Maurer looked good last season for the most part, but couldn't stay healthy, and HB apparently hasn't had enough time to learn even a chapter of the playbook...it is what it is. One of those guys needs to take advantage of this opportunity and step up, they haven't done that yet. Maybe they will get the chance again Saturday. This is big time college football, so it doesn't matter who we are playing, they should be able to go out and compete.

Maurer made a lot of mistakes last season, but it always felt like the offense just "worked better" with him in the game. He'll improve quickly. IMO, he's going to be a very good college QB; just of matter of when.

Maurer has more swagger than any QB since Bray, and the offense played harder when he was out there last year.

If he didn't have problems with concussions last year I think he would've stayed the starter. The turn overs will go down as he gets more experience.
