247: Pruitt Contemplating Change at QB

It was troubling Saturday when after one of the picks the sideline reporter said that only one person tried to encourage JG. Otherwise he just sat alone. Not good. His expressions and body language were bad too.
I heard the sideline reporter say that... yet when JG came off the field I saw multiple guys talking to him and Paxton Brooks in particular having a conversation with him.

I think we all know it is time. Honestly, what Pruitt is doing to JG is tough to watch. I know that JG has experience, but his game film shows us an inconsistent QB and one that will make really dumb mistakes. JG is an outstanding young man, and Vol fans should appreciated what he has been willing to go through for us. That beings said, to continue to run JG out on the field in front of a fan base that is ready to move on puts him in a place to be overly criticized everywhere you turn. Right or wrong, college fan bases will bash a player's performance at this level. Pruitt should think about that. Some other toughts:
1) You go with the experienced QB over a young one because you think they will manage the game and protect the ball. JG is making mistakes. If He is going to make these mistakes, you might as well let a young QB make them...it will be at least a little more palatable.
2) The 1994 TN/AL game is on TV right now and it was the Manning/Stewart game where they were taking over the reigns. At one point the announcer said "starting these two freshman now may be a blessing in disguise for Phillip Fulmer...now he can see what these two freshman can do and can develop who will be his quarterback next year." Not exact phrasing because I don't remember.
3)The argument about putting one of these young QB's out against Alabama could hurt their psyche. IMO If taking a beating vs. Alabama ruins a kid, there probably wasn't much that was going to happen with that kid anyway. I see BM and HB as two guys with a strong enough ego to bounce back. Also going back to this 1994 Alabama game we went into the half with Peyton Manning 2/5 for 22 yds and 2 Int's. I think he bounced back and did alright.

Best post I’ve read in awhile Chief. Thanks for posting. I agree 100%.

When are you going to get it? THEY HAVENT BEEN GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPLANT JG! It is literally IMPOSSIBLE for a backup to “earn” the starting job if he doesn’t practice with the starters.

You know this for a fact? No you dont. Fact is none of the QBs have beaten JG out.

They've gotta support their teammate. I'd do the same. Never kick them when they're down.

But in the back of their mind...all of them...at this point they have to know he's not the guy who can win the tough games.

Tough spot for his teammates to be in. It's on Pruitt to make that tough call. And it's past time he did.

Go Vols.

I hope.Brian is physically able to go.He had a.spark that lit up the team whenever he came in.Good arm and legs. Not afraid to take off.(No slight meant for JG,one of the toughest.guys I've ever seen to take a hit and bounce back up).

Do these backup QBs not try to win the job?

I don't understand what's going on here, every starting position should be a competition at this point.
This! Every position should be like that in every year. Previous year starters can become complacent. A player is only as good as his last game.

Pruitt has forced Chaney and Weinke to work with and play JG. I do not believe either would have chosen JG if given an actual choice.

They have been limited as to how much they were able to prepare the others. They had to put time into JG hoping to make him successful.
Is this just your opinion or do you have a source for this information? I do know you are correct on preparing the backups as it came from CJP’s mouth. Just curious

I think you meant the fall on his head. It seems he could have physically returned in the UGA game but it had already begun to get out of hand. Outside of the two terrible decisions vs MSU... he was moving the team and hitting open receivers. Then he had that awkward flip.
I may be wrong but I thought he took a big hit at the end of the UGA game that caused him to fumble and was returned for a TD. He made it to the sideline but was totally out of it for several minutes.

Start Holliday Saturday with an RPO package. They will never see that coming. When they adapt put in Maurer. Let the chips fall. What they are doing isn’t working. We need a running QB to mix it up!

Our QB problem is not any of our QB's fault. It is the poor excuse for a QB coach we have. Two of our back ups have been in the system at least two years. If we don't have a next man up by now, it falls squarely on the the QB coach.
Our backups may not have been developed the right way but JG is 100% responsible for his performance during his career here.

Yes! I actually DO know this for a FACT. I’ve been there, seen it with my own two eyes. The back ups run with the 2s and 3s. JG takes the snaps with the 1s.
And that's pretty much how most teams operate. If QB1 gets on shakey ground, then he starts splitting reps with QB2 among the 1s and 2s. I wouldn't be surprised if reps with the 1s were split this week.

Use this game as a scrimmage.
Bama defense is just average but offense is great and will roll up score.
so why not alternate all three qbs (no JG).
let them All play with our first team offense and see how they do.

No. That’s not how most teams operate. Certainly none I’ve ever been around. Most teams split reps with the 1s 60/40 between qb1 and qb2. Qb3 and 4 work with the 2s and 3s 50/50. How do you think a lot of teams lose a qb midway through a game and qb2 comes in and is actually decent? That’s BECAUSE they also take first team reps on a regular basis.
