Yes they paid 3 mil for a guy who's foot is a ticking time bomb.So the defending national champion and the team that knocked it out of the park on talent evaluations this year makes it a top priority to get the guy we let walk. Locking him down without even visiting.
Again, more evidence our roster management sucks
Yes absolutely…my point being if he’s not in the portal when it closes then case closed, no more wondering about Tanner. If he enters the portal then the discussion shifts to, will he stay in the draft or return to college. But can't he decide to enter the draft thereby rendering the portal a moot point? For that matter, couldn't he commit to is tonight and still enter the draft kind of like baseball?
Estrella is skilled. Injury prone tho. I'd rather spend the money on a physical bruiser or two. Guys who make you think twice before driving the lane. Guys who think every rebound is theirs. Guys who could play for Houston. In any event, best of luck to him and thanks for the memories. He's a quality kid.Yep several big men including Hines and Thiem much better players. He is a good player but not great and certainly not worth chunk of their budget they spent on him. He averages 18 minutes a game.
Too much nuance for some I'm afraidHere’s the deal, a players value can vary program to program. Michigan has a much different big man philosophy and system than we do, now we can debate if maybe we should change ours to be more like theirs seeing as how they just won it all, but that’s not the point here. Michigan puts huge emphasis and thus value on having big men who can pass, shoot, move and play more of a finesse NBA style, we do not. Estrella fits their mold very well, and I won’t be shocked if he has great success there, but again, that doesn’t mean it would be matched here. There’s a reason you didn’t see Florida, Duke or Houston pursuing Estrella, he doesn’t really fit what they want to do in the post, much like us, but again he fits very well with what Michigan does. I get this is a complex idea for many who just want this to be, “wow, we’re idiots, what dumb roster management”, but there’s layers to this and Estrella can be worth more to Michigan than us, as well as fit their system better as well, both can be true.
That’s not the VN way. We have residents who would complain if they won the lottery. What’s up with all this whining? How about we let the guys actually take some visits starting tomorrow before we all jump off a cliff. Out here acting like every other school is already racking up portal players left and right. Heck we’ve already got one ourselves.
He’s done nothing yet. Have no idea how some of you make it.So the defending national champion and the team that knocked it out of the park on talent evaluations this year makes it a top priority to get the guy we let walk. Locking him down without even visiting.

People already talked about Carr as a potential draft pick/first rounder when he was on the bench his freshman year and barely played. It makes sense that mock drafts would think the same after he played big minutesc'mon, Cam Carr is a mid-first rounder in the mock drafts. Was he a mid-first rounder here? No. The discussion started with "who developed better after leaving here" and DJ Burns, Cam Carr, and Tobe Awaka are all good examples. It's OK to admit that it happens sometimes.
I don’t agree for a couple reasons. One, if you watched the champ game, a big reason UConn struggled is UM switched on every pick and cut. And 2, Estrella got stuck on switches by not talking and not hedging right then immediately sprinting to his man or the paint. You can’t be indecisive and quiet. People who think our coaches told him to switch on high picks to the PG are incorrect. Lack of awareness, focus and communication led to him getting stuck, not the coaches telling him to switch.^^^

Not saying your analysis is wrong, but ifHere’s the deal, a players value can vary program to program. Why is this so hard for people to understand? It’s really as simple as Barnes runs a motion offense with more emphasis on guard play and perimeter shooting. Here’s the deal, a players value can vary program to program. Michigan has a much different big man philosophy and system than we do, now we can debate if maybe we should change ours to be more like theirs seeing as how they just won it all, but that’s not the point here. You almost have to give Barnes the benefit of the doubt. He knows a whole lot more than we do about Estrella. He may think he can get more than Estrella with less risk for that kind of money.I understand the point but it’s been reported that the market for big men this year is in the $3-$4 million range considering options are relatively limited. I guess the word “undervalue” is open to interpretation, because it’s subjective and value to one person may be different than baiter. But at least by the market standards we didn’t match.
I know there are injury concerns. I just have a feeling next year we’ll be seeing Estrella as one of the best bigs in the entire country and it’s going to suck.
