2025 Transfer Portal Thread

Regarding Massamba…there’s a solid chance we could hear of his signing today. If not, it should be before the weekend…but no worries at all…Massamba is going to be a Vol. This will put us at 12 guys, likely holding a spot open until the 15 player rule goes into effect. We don’t expect Vols to take anymore meaningful minute guys (looking at Kennedy Okpara and maybe another developmental project) outside of the slim chance the 5th year passes AND applies to this 2025 senior class…ala Jordan Gainey. There is a tad optimism it may pass, but it could be only going forward and not applied to the past, meaning it would not go into effect until 2026 seniors.

Really wanted another difference maker at the 2. Maybe Abram will be better than I realize. I feel you need more options than just Gillespie and Ament to be your scoring threats if you want to get to the F4.

Have heard similar about the 5th year thing, but if they make that ruling sometime in July/August there’s no way that holds up in court, allowing previous classes 5 years and classes going forward 5 years, everyone except this 1 senior class, they’ll lose that very quickly.

So either:

1. They plan to kick that down the road until September or later so they these 5th year guys will all have moved on and not enrolled in school or

2. Their hope is that by July/August if they implement it that most 5th year guys will have signed contracts and moved on thus only having to worry about a few guys potentially suing them.

The latest buzz on this is that the July vote could force a suit right away from the last Senior class. It's why many of them haven't taken the next step in their careers. Again-- this is absolutely a "no one knows" situation, but it's become a little bit of a legal chess game. Every week there seems to be a new move.

We will have more scoring threats in the front court than we have in a while. Carey, Okpara, and Estrella will provide some scoring.

Based on their composite industry ranking, he’d have been the #1 recruit in 2023. And #2 in several other years.
True, but that kid ranked #1 and headed to BYU I think is clearly in a league of his own. Kid is something and much stronger than ament although one site had ament at 215 and the BYU kid at 210. Not buying that.

I am optimistic; not like he's just gonna be doing nothing on the court. Sure he doesn't have the pedigree of McKneely or Rice, but he can flat out shoot the ball. Think people will be pleasantly surprised.

If they wait until school year starts thus making those guys all ineligible (assuming they aren’t in school) then they are going to have a massive lawsuit on their hands from all of those seniors that didn’t get a 5th year when everyone else has, seems like a pretty easy case to win imo. The smart thing to do is to include this senior class if the plan is to have a 5th year added going forward, avoid all the legal issues, but then again rarely does the NCAA do the smart thing.

My educated guess based on everything is that it gets passed sometime in July/August, that will eliminate a solid % of the seniors via pro contracts having been signed and will keep the NCAA out of legal trouble on that front. It should also be after the 15 scholarship limit will have gone into effect which is supposedly going to have a grandfather clause in it for current walk on’s so there should be roster room for those who want to return.

An interesting dynamic in football is that ST could potentially get better with the removal of the redshirt with more talent playing their Freshmen year

Regarding Ament--

He definitely has the size and skill to be special. NBA written all over him to be able to handle it and move at that size/length. Just a question of when he fully grows into that frame.
