2025 Transfer Portal Thread

They aren’t going to bring someone in just to bring someone in, they want to add someone that they feel can very legitimately compete for a starting spot and at worst be a rotational player at guard. Cornish expressed an interest in being here and was willing to come in for a defacto tryout, after which the staff didn’t feel he fit what they were looking to add.

Whether they are able to find someone who does remains to be seen, I don’t think they necessarily feel confident elsewhere as much as they just feel like they’ll eventually be able to find someone who fits that mold. They continue to evaluate guys in the portal, look into guys that maybe need a waiver but are more likely than not to get it, and evaluate the international market as well.
Understood, just was wondering how that fit into your 2/3 week timeline projection. Not that I expect ya to know or that I think the timeline is more than educated guess. Appreciate it

Was just an educated guess and not based on anyone in particular…the international withdrawal date for NBA draft is in 10 days, the few guys that withdraw and head to college will get scooped up quickly if not already done, and there’s only a couple names left in the portal worth looking at, so those would also go quickly I would presume. Now a head coaching change or a player getting a waiver could happen further down the line, but obviously those aren’t great odds either to rely on happening. There’s also the whole wanting to get someone here and acclimated with their teammates and coaches as well.

Yeah totally makes sense, figured as much on all counts! Just antsy/always excited for the team.

NCAA slow playing 5th year is about to create chaos I think...I've not personally reviewed all the numbers, but on3 shows over 1100 players in the portal and only 53% are committed. Quite a few are guys that would require waivers I think. But that's a huge pool to choose from, and if the 5th year happens now....lord what a scramble drill that could create.

Not just 5th year guys in portal getting taken, but the ripple effect of the teams they go to and the roster turnover potential it could cause.

Interesting to see where some guys ended up that we were mentioned with.

Alex Chaikin ends up at the University of California San Diego State (he must have got called on his bluff for bigger offers and lost)

Rice chased a bigger bag to USC and they've rewarded him with more competition for minutes

Wilkerson to Indiana and since he signed with them, they added 7 more wing players lol

Yea, I think that’s also why they’re trying to slow play the 5th year thing, drag it out into the school year and avoid the mess of all these guys then being eligible. Of course that potentially opens them up to lawsuits for this being the one random class with no 5th year, but maybe they rather deal with that, who knows.

Really feel like we are a SG away from having another elite 8 or final 4 team. Sucks that that position might be what either makes or breaks us. Not sure the roster can makeup for the fact of us not having a pure scorer at that spot. Wish we had some clarity
Inb4 a certain someone writes a Harry Potter novel calling you an idiot as well as describing what each player did against certain opponents.

Lastly, they will ask you “who else is available?” along with some other remark that will have you confused.

Delete your post and don’t ask anymore questions. Stay safe fellow poster

Truthfully, find it odd the staff was so passive for weeks and now suddenly feel it’s an urgent need.

I don’t necessarily think they were passive, the guard market dried up pretty quick, who was available and realistic that went off the board the last 2-3 weeks? They probably could’ve had more stokes in the fire, in reality most guys have an idea of where they’re likely headed or have their list focused on a school or 2.

Also it’s not like everyone is gone. Still some names out there, surely a SG emerges.

Man there ain’t much, I’ll be honest…went through the On3 portal ranking earlier and got to about 600 ranked guys and there wasn’t much beside Kimble who’s redshirting this year now.

I mean they didn’t publicly pursue another guard after landing Abram on April 29th. There was plenty of guys still available, obviously not now. I understand the dead period, but just really seemed like they were content to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Edit: Other than Desmond and the Dartmouth kid in the last 3-4 days.

Maybe, I don’t recall tons of names since then that either A. Weren’t commanding a huge dollar amount or B. Weren’t already far down the road with another school. I’m sure there were some but I don’t think it’s as if they passed on hundreds of great options and now are looking around. Again you can criticize that they should’ve maybe had more stokes in the fire for sure, I just don’t necessarily agree they’ve been sitting idle.

I’ll maintain, they should’ve just paid Rice. Made too much sense and now there’a very little options as you said.

I’ll certainly take it. They have been great given Tennessee’s standards. Just doesn’t seem like a “loading up for Barnes” type of approach that was being hyped up.
Much like the freakout going on in early April about how many guys we missed on and how we were going to suck, I’ll wait and see what happens. As it stands now it’s another Top 10-15 roster which is hard to criticize, but they could definitely use another scorer.

That’s all I’m saying. I would’ve really liked for them to be more aggressive to land a really quality 2 guard. If ZZ and/or Gainey get another year of eligibility, this is all a moot point.

Easy for you to say when you don’t have to juggle the rest and handle the locker room, personally I would say they should’ve paid McKneely and not Rice.
Sure, seemed like it was just more than money with McKneely. However, I agree it would’ve just made everything much clearer early on.
