2025/26 Transfer Portal Thread

To be fair Heupel did make Sampson the guy. So I think he is fine with that if a player is good enough to handle it. But you probably have to overpay to get that from the portal. But since we don’t have that guy right now, I would be in favor of overpaying to get one.

Watching Lacy at Ole Miss today had me thinking about it.

No disrespect to Bishop either. Love him. He can thrive next to anyone. Even in smaller doses.

But also maybe Morris is going to be awesome and we’re better there than I think. I just want a bunch a guys in that room I guess. Depth seems shaky if Lewis is out.
Why does so many think Lewis is out?

I understand. I wouldn’t be mad if he got another 2 year deal. I just don’t know what you can point to in terms of recruiting or development that tells me he’s a good RB coach for an elite program/aspiring contender.

And most important recruit in next class happens to play his position.
If Sims can't reel in DGG, then I'll agree with you about replacing him.

Agree and actually got a little crap in his thread for saying that.

But at that time the narrative hadn’t quite shifted fully from OSU being the leader.

Wish such an important recruitment didn’t have to be the litmus test for a guy I have doubts about, but it is what it is. I trust Heup, and I’m good if Sims gets the chance to recruit DGG. Hope he proves me wrong.

PLew the first portal loss that actually kinda pains me.

Don’t care if we move on from Sims.
Here's a "chess, not checkers" move. Go hire Carlos Locklyn from Ohio St. Locklyn played at Chattanooga, coached HS in Memphis for years, and then at UofMemphis. He makes $650k, nearly twice that of Sims, but his record speaks for itself. Pay him $900k, get another leg up on DGG next year, and don a final "screw you" to Legend Bey.

Josh passed over Locklyn to hire Sims. Was a big mistake..

So….can someone tell me why DeRail Sims suddenly sucks? Last I checked our RB production has been pretty solid the last couple years and did a decent job in pass pro this year. Not saying he’s a world beater but coaching RB’s is about as simplistic as it gets on a coaching staff.

Edit: anyone else remember how hard AP used to go saying PLew would be the next great Vol back 😂
I don't take anyone serious that doesn't use dark mode.

He doesn't "suck". But he failed to land a top back in this class. If he fails again in the next class, then he needs to go because his recruiting chops aren't good enough. You can't whiff in recruiting your position two years in a row. DGG is the target. He plays in Chattanooga. Sims should have the leg up. Needs to land him.

Partially. Question. How many times during Banks tenure did you see the defense actually quit? If you are honest and not biased then you will say hardly any. So the culture? Well how was that culture last year?

You coach blaming only people continue to fail.

Look if it’s 1 or 2 players then I’m all for blaming said players. Boo Carter wasn’t a culture problem, he was to blame himself. I honestly don’t think players quit vs Vanderbilt. I just think we were outcoached. Tim seems like a good dude, but I’ve never seen him make adjustments. He seems stubborn in his gameplan and stubborn is the worst trait you can be as a college football coach.

Because the armchair coaches on VN say so

Were they out coached in the first half of the Vandy game? No they weren’t. And failing to wrap your hands around a player is a decades long fundamental that is 100% on the player. Remember Colton Jumper? He wasn’t a bad tackler. Why? Because he gave 100% effort. That wasn’t coaching. Remember guys like Little, Wilson and Berry? Yes coaching mattered but do you honestly believe that the only reason those guys were elite was because of scheme and coaching? Come on. It’s because those guys wanted to be the best. Their individual efforts to be the best.

Take Jalin Hyatt. He wasn’t very good his first few years. What did he do? He hit the juggs machine and worked his butt off to improve himself. He wanted it. And he got it. He’s coaching mattered but you either have it or you don’t. Take Clowney. One of the most gifted defensive specimens ever. Dude had it all. But what held him back? His individual efforts. Not coaching.

If an entire side of the ball “quits” then yes it’s always going to be on the coach. You don’t have 11 kids quitting without it being a reflection of you and your culture. Yes we were outcoached in the first half of Vanderbilt too. We should be 21 points better than Vandy int both halves at all times.

Please explain how we were out coached in the first half of the Vandy game. And nope it’s not on the coach. You are wrong. Answer me this. Why are you so reluctant to blame players? Also please explain how our culture is bad.
