Hadn’t heard of this story before yesterday. Jimmy Hyams was on Doug Mathews and was discussing the new model of universities heading the NIL instead of collectives. My instinct is to maintain a partnership where Spyre would take the primary lead because they’ve proven the best in the nation. But Jimmy pointed out that Knecht was lined up to speak at the Big Orange Tipoff for $1000…20 minutes work. Spyre quashed it and demanded $3000. Jimmy’s contention is that set off donors the wrong way and I never agree with Hyams…but on this one it makes solid sense. So a potential great PR good vibes moment doesn’t happen for a cash grab. Ugly tail wagging the dog stuff. You're comparing apples to oranges in the current environment, though. These kids aren't professional athletes (yet). On the surface, in the landscape of college basketball where Dalton Knecht is worth $500k, Jonas Aidoo isn't worth $1 million. But at the end of the day, you are worth whatever someone is willing to pay you for your services. If Baylor believes JA is worth that money, then that's what he's worth, I guess.

Forgot the name of the real respected national authority on portals, but on a recent show he recounted Knecht was 43 on his list.
I don’t pore over any of the lists. Most of it is parsed, publicly available information. As with the Nerd Collective that hands out stars to high school athletes with varying situations, it’s about interpretation of how their skills translate at a different venue. The guy I cited who rated him lowly iterated that it wasn’t an insult to rate a player who had just shown double figure capability at a sustained basis in his second season at Northern Colorado. 20 ppg when he’d averaged 8.9 the previous season and in his last season of JUCO. It could be maintained that 43 was pretty optimistic. I don’t remember anyone on this board coming close to declaring him the wunderking he became. There were lots of downed heads when the other transfer bailed. Sometimes it works for you. Glad we got to enjoy one.Well that guy is an idiot then...
247 had DK as the 13th best overall portal player last year.
(I usually look at On3 & 247 because they typically do like an average of multiple sources for their rankings)

He’s a national guy. Doubt he was pandering to any one market. Obviously Knecht was underrated in retrospect, but he made it so after the fact. It was difficult to project what we saw based on his past performance against lower competition. When the two biggest recruiting/rating sites in town both have a player in their top 25 ranking said player 20+ spots lower at 43rd seems like "I wanna be different" more than anything else.
If anything DK's season showed he was grossly underrated as he was the only transfer to be a Naismith finalist this year...so even 13th was too low in hindsight. We absolutely got to enjoy it!![]()
I'd consider him our most important portal target. Not only his scoring, but some have said he's also capable of running the point if needed. I really don't like the thought of Boswell being the only backup. Yeah, Gainey. Yeah, Mashack, but neither of those is ideal or confidence inspiring.Better hope
Agreed, absolutely need him at this point.I'd consider him our most important portal target. Not only his scoring, but some have said he's also capable of running the point if needed. Boswell will not be ready in ‘04-‘05I'd consider him our most important portal target. Not only his scoring, but some have said he's also capable of running the point if needed.
